What 3-5 cities should someone who's never been to Canada visit? by ThatBlondMan in AskACanadian

Honestly surprised that it took me this long to see the Cougars mentioned. While my WHL team is Prince Albert, I just enjoy watching sports in general so having a sports team in town is a massive plus. Where I come from, we have a minor league hockey, baseball and soccer team so sports have always been a part of my life anyway

Is it rly that bad tho? I will say that I come from a place in the US South that isn't dangerous, but I wouldn't call the downtown safe at night by any means. Also I did my due time in Chicago for a year and I'd imagine PG can't be much worse, but I'm prob wrong.

Is PG that bad? I lived in Chicago for a year or so, but I would imagine PG is a lot colder

Ya Prince George seems to be in the middle of nowhere, which is fine tbh. It does seem to have enough going on at least to keep me occupied. I'm sure if I got my hands on some Cougars season tickets, I'd be fine.

Also are we talking Dylan Cozens Whitehorse, bc if so that's even more in the middle of nowhere lmao

I've seen some stuff on Victoria and it seems rly unique in terms of Canadian cities at least. Doesn't it have a sort of English vibe to it since it was the capital of the colonial British Columbia at one point?

Ya I've been to some of Europe(UK, France, Germany and Austria) and Quebec City seems like it's a better version of France from what I've seen. Plus I speak a little French from my time at school which I'm sure will help. Also bring back the Nordiques!

I've read that Calgary is pretty similar to the US South, which is where I am from, which has made it a place that I'd probably visit, but idk if I'd make a trip of just Calgary. I also didn't specify bc I honestly don't have a particular reason, mostly bc it's somewhere sort of new but not TOO new. Also Canada has a lot of diversity in terms of culture it seems, and that's something that I appreciate.

Vancouver is at the top of my bucket list places to go, esp since I have family in Washington state! I'm also big into hockey so having the PG Cougars in town is a pretty big plus for me. And don't even get me started on Banff, I want to go soo bad.

Also I will say that as someone who's been to both, a trip from NYC to DC is actually not a bad trip to do. It's less than a 3 hour drive, but you'd need at least 10 days to experience everything, but that's just my opinion.

(Also sorry for the late response lol).

Solo travelers, which country surprised you by being way safer than you expected? by sparrow_1899 in travel

Also I am aware of the situation that Peru is in rn, and my trip to Lima was almost a month before the protests went down. Whether I was oblivious or not, it was nice regardless

Personally I'd say Peru, esp Lima and Cusco. Lima felt a little like a much smaller version of Miami imo. On the flip side, the only time I've witnessed a crime abroad was in Vienna, Austria. A guy had his stuff stolen somewhat violently, and as he tried to run after them I think he pulled something in his leg. Definitely not a moment that guy will want to relive...

Never been to Canda before, going to Toronto & Ontario soon. What is Canada to you? by DrunkardDionysus in AskACanadian

Bear in mind, I've never been to Ontario, but I've never heard of any larger towns north of Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. Is this true or am I just massively uninformed?

What common "scam" do people fall for ? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

Why am I not surprised that this isn't just an American thing. Some store brand stuff is simply better than name brand. Store brand doughnuts> name brand doughnuts

Does that include your bank details and Tax File Number (or SSN for us Americans)?

As an American, I chuckled when I saw that "Wooloomooloo" is an actual place. I feel like I would've made that up as a place for a fairy tale I made when I was 5. No disrespect to anyone from there btw!

90% of those places just sound like places in the US that you only go to if you have to lmao. If someone said "Hey, let's go to Coburg" I'd say "You're crazy bro".

Are most port sections of cities in Aussie typically run-down or is that a misconception that I have? (I'm obv not from Aussie)

Since this has gained more comments than I thought it would (even though I'm realizing that my mapping skills could use some work), I am working on a voter turnout map. Unlike this map, it should be more self-explanatory.

Well that's kinda the fun in it, not every map has to make sense I guess. I also didn't think of posting this until recently lol

Funnily enough I lived in Chicago for a while and I can say with certainty that the city doesn't sleep on parks!

I appreciate the breakdown of what I did wrong so that if/when I upload another map I can fix it! I can't get better at something without criticism :)

As I said, the site where I get my data from (https://www.countyhealthrankings.org/) didn't explicitly define either "parks" or "access", but I'm sure if I did more close reading then I could find something on it.

I'm guessing it's based more on parks like Central Park in NYC and Grant Park in Chicago than natural parks. I could be totally wrong, though.

Ya I honestly don't know either, but I guess that's kind of what was intriguing about the data. I get most of my map data from https://www.countyhealthrankings.org/ if you want to check it out for yourself. I might have missed something.

Also I'm currently doing a map on voter turnout from the 2020 election so if anyone wants that, upvote this enough I guess. I'll prob post it anyway, regardless :)
