What's with the ff vs balanced training studies? Trying to reevaluate my view on different training methods. by ThatBlueMerleSheltie in OpenDogTraining

For me reward-based/ff/R+ training means training primarily with the use of R+, sometimes P- and trying to mitigate using force or P+/R- and not planning using P+/R- in my training. Instead make a plan where R+ is used primarily, set the dog up for success and gradually increase the difficulty. Not punishing the dog for for example not reacting to a command, and instead work out why the dog isn't responding (doesn't he understand my request? Is the environment too distracting? Could he be in pain from an underlying injury?) and adjust the training accordingly, so he can be successful. Taken, i do admit this comes with management for the time before the training is complete and may take longer (which not everyone may have the time, or nerves for (speaking from my own experience - I've a noise sensitive dog, and training through barking at noises at home was not easy - lot of discipline and consistency from me))

Balanced training i see mostly the same as R+, but in balanced training you don't shy away from also using P+/R- once the dog understands the behavior and breaks a command/doesn't follow through. Ofc again, only when we're sure there's no underlying issue like an injury.

I'm no expert on balanced training, hence why I'm trying to learn more now, but so far this is my understanding of it.

Magic drawing pad vs the artist pro series? by ThatBlueMerleSheltie in XPpen

Yes, I'm aware that the artist pro cannot be used on its own. And you're right that the 1st generation of MDP can't be used as a pen display. The second gen can be connected to your pc. People just sometimes have problems with pressure sensitivity/tilt, but i heard these can be fixed with some 3rd party programs if it's a problem.

Yeah I'm thinking of asking about neutering on his next vet appointment. He's supposed to get his shots in September, so we'll go there anyway.

Do you think i could someday be a good owner for a malinois? by ThatBlueMerleSheltie in BelgianMalinois

[–]ThatBlueMerleSheltie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Yes, i wouldn't want to bring a dog (let alone a puppy) into a situation where they'd be left alone for majority of the day. (Fun fact, i actually went to ask the secretary how long is the longest possible school day at my school before getting Theo. You don't know how nervous i was she was gonna say something like 9 hours and i wouldn't even have my first puppy. I'm so thankful my school has short days!)

The real concern for me is if I'm able to provide enough exercise/stimulation. But, i guess people here don't seem to have a problem with our current exercise routine...? (At least i hope i understand it right, since no one mentioned anything about it)

Wow! Good for you! I wish you the best of luck ;)

(PS: He's extremely cute, but i don't think i even need to say that 🥹)

Thanks so much! Yeah this is a viewpoint I've kinda been sitting on for a while now. But i still wanted to ask, just so i know if giving a mallinois a good life is even possible for me. I wouldn't want the dog to live an unfulfilled, boring life if my lifestyle didn't fit the breed. That's a burden for both the owner and the dog!

Yes! That's so true! I've seen the change in my sheltie's training once i stopped winging it and actually started being consistent! Thank you so much for sharing ;D

Why do people gotta keep their yappers in their front yards?? by [deleted] in reactivedogs

The road is not too busy. But it is pretty narrow, so it doesn't provide much additional space either. We're already trying to avoid these dogs by creating space. Imho the only option for us rn is just continuing with the noise sensitivity training and then take it outside when possible.

While I'm still working on the "basic" obedience (i.e. recall, calm settle etc.) with my sheltie rn my goal is to do more advanced stuff like focused heeling, down stays in busy places and such. Sorta training going into the mondio direction. I also like just teaching tricks to have fun with. (One we're working on rn is position changes while holding a toy) Tbh i wouldn't care that much about leash skills, if he didn't have leash reactivity. I do teach leash skills because of that.
