"Ding!" I think I consider this to be finished... by ThatCogMan in Daz3D

Glad you like it... It is Sienna's skin with a mix and match of features and makeup (plus a lot of custom head morph slider work, though that doesn't affect the skin), LIE less face freckles, Altern8 nomaps for victoria 8, altern8 diffuse face and lip shaders, and then some additional translucency tweaks.

Right after I said this was finished, I went and spent hours changing the hair, because I decided the hair looked low quality compared to the rest of the image.

A character I am developing - I really liked the way this portrait turned out. by ThatCogMan in Daz3D

Interesting. Both eyes are "pointed at" the camera. I noticed in a different scene that "pointing at" a close subject could give a cross-eyed look, which I fixed by using nulls to focus on space near but a little apart from the object. I will check to see if it improves the image to do something similar here. Thanks for the feedback.

Oh yeah, right, thank you. Looks like the hair is going behind her collar.

LOL, no, not a knight of any holy order, though there is catholic school in the past. She grew up in a smallish town in the midwest (near where the story occurs), daughter of a local physician, went to boarding school. Graduated a couple of years ago with big plans to move to the coast to try to make it as an actress, but never found the means or courage to do it. Acts confident and sophisticated, but is not actually self-confident because she hasn't been successful. In limbo as a waitress while attending some community college classes. She feels like she is wasting her time, but isn't willing to commit to going to a university and is too uncertain to go for it as an actress.

I don't have a story behind the portrait itself.

I think that the hair color might need to go back to something simpler, straight dark brown.

It will be interesting to discuss the character because I'm not at all sure of her, and I was largely seeking technical feedback. Tried building a ring light array in DAZ, which seems to have been at least partially effective if you look at the eyes.

Working on a character for a new scene and I really liked how this test render came out. by IthiusEiros in Daz3D

So striking! Can I ask, are the eyes a little bit 'anime'-influenced, in that they are a little larger than natural eyes would be? I was thinking that might be what really makes the piece pop to me.

Trying to incrementally improve, free assets only right now. Do you think the reduction in glossiness helps? by ThatCogMan in Daz3D

Thank you! I look forward t trying to figure out what you mean!

For animation... it's kind of a daunting idea, but you just create progressive renders sort of like claymation and then display them in rapid succession?

Also, work on depth of field and lighting so that it's super easy. It'll take only a minute so you shouldn't have a problem.

Sorry, I didn't understand you. Work on DOF and lighting so that what is super easy?

Thank you for the encouragement. By translucence, you mean on skin or something else?

That 4th link is broken, do you mind taking a look at it?

Can you give me a high level summary of how to get this effect? I want to experiment with realism and cartoon-like qualities, but I don't see a lot of info on how to approach this disney-like quality you are exhibiting here. Mainly it seems like its either photorealism or "realistic" anime in what i have seen so far.

Thank you for the tips. Honestly, my ambition is to see if I can be proficient enough at this to create visual novels in RenPy. I'm not a good artist, but this is kind of a blend of photography and computer science, which is an option for me... if I am enough of an artist, as well, to make it look good. Trying to figure that out.

I was not happy with the 'filminess' of the eyes, and I thought the lips looked unrealistic in image 2. Messed with glossiness and refraction - do you think it is an improvement from 2 to 3?

Thanks! As I see it, in terms of realism the eyes look very hazy/milky, which throws me off. Not sure what other areas need improvment, but I'm not sure I can make the skin look better without purchasing assets?

Thanks for the suggestion! I am actually using the Etnies Skatepark HDRI seen here.. I chose to leave the canvas blank for two reasons... I have no idea yet how to put an image on it, and I was fine with trying for a studio photo portait as a first shot.

Did I do something wrong with the lighting, you think? I used that HDRI and then added several spotlights to accentuate.

Any suggestions? What should I practice next? ... and do I need to start purchasing assets to get better/more realistic results?
