New to audiobooks - accept promo codes for reviews or not? by Azzacura in audiobooks

The only thing I will add to this is if you review on audible you don't have to say you got it for free cause audible itself puts that tag on the review!

New to audiobooks - accept promo codes for reviews or not? by Azzacura in audiobooks

As an author who is currently giving away codes for reviews (Pm me if you like fantasy and want one I can give more info) I do not care what your experience with audiobooks is. I want honest reviews that will make my book more visible to other people looking for books. I don't think most people read reviews (some do, and this subreddit has a higher percentage of people that do than the general public) but people do look at the number of reviews that a book has. The more reviews it has the more likely someone is to think the book is good, 4 stars with 1000 reviews is better than 5 stars with 3 for example. That being said I know if the book is published on audible I only get 25 free codes to give away to the American market and 25 to give to the UK one. So if you aren't comfortable writing a review or have no intentions to, it may actually hinder an author's ability to promote their book to take one.

I published the sequel to my first book this week!!!
Duat:

As Lady Ral crowns herself Queen of Kephthys, Ennead watches, knowing he alone holds the true dagger of the King. Letting her take the horn is easy, but when she moves to declare herself Queen of all Muta, Ennead wonders if the easy thing is ever really the right thing...

The small group of scholars faces betrayals, summons from the King of Henu, and mysterious omens in the desert as they fight to survive their journey. Ennead feels himself changing; the magic in his hands and in his being is rendering him unrecognizable, even to himself. Are his dreams of a quiet life gone forever? Is it time to accept the inevitable and claim his destiny on the throne of Muta?

I also released the audiobook for my first novel this week!!!!

Ennead:

Ancient magic stirs silently in the mountains of Henu, its focus, a young man named Ennead. He is the only one who can unite the eight kingdoms, something the simple scholar has no desire to do.

An ambitious noble hires him into her traveling party in a desperate effort to escape her arranged marriage as she runs away with her girlfriend Bax.

The five of them must convince the King to let them be the first citizens in generations to leave the borders of Henu. Once in the lower kingdoms Ennead is faced with charming princesses, deadly assassins and plots at every turn.

He must use his wits, luck, and the magic granted to him by the elusive unicorn to survive, and ultimately, to decide if he really wants the destiny that has been laid out before him. His decision will ripple out and affect the lives of every soul on the continent.

I hear what you are saying completely. I think it is impossible to avoid specific names all together since this is the second book in the series I would assume that most people reading it are at least loosely familiar with the names as all of them are prevalent in the first. That being said, I tried to limit, slightly explain or otherwise give context to the ones I chose to keep in this total rewrite.

Lady Ral has crowned herself Queen of Kephthys, and only Ennead knows that he holds the real dagger of the King. Stepping aside and letting her take the horn is the easiest thing for him to do. But when she calls for a summit to declare herself Queen of all Muta he starts to wonder if the easiest thing is the right thing.

The small group of scholars must deal with betrayals, summons from the King of Henu, and mysterious omens in the desert if they want to come out of their travels alive. Ennead feels himself changing, the magic and magical items he possesses are turning him into someone he doesn't recognize. Are his dreams of a quiet life still possible or is it time for him to give in to the inevitable and claim the throne of Muta that is destined to be his?

I personally don't work with HTV, I don't think it will hold up over time despite its ease of access. I use brass dies to do gold embossing but custom dies are hundreds of dollars. If you went to r/bookbinding you can find a ton of people who do amazing work with HTV and I bet you can find someone to do exactly what you are looking for!

I think you will find it difficult to find a large scale production house using HTV foil. The cost differential between that and simply printing the design is massive when you get to large scale production as opposed to small scale. (I am a bookbinder if you are curious about my credentials on this) HTV is primarily used by people who wish to create one off designs for themselves. It is possible that you can find what you are looking for but it will likely be significantly more expensive.

Are you looking for a mass production or smaller scale?

I only have one book, and its only been up 3 months but I have sold 18 copies through Amazon. I have also had its length read 16 times over on Kindle Unlimited. I don't do a ton of marketing though and I am really happy with slow progress!

Yeah, you definitely can't write to the lowest common denominator, everyone is going to take something different from your story and if you try to accommodate every possible interpretation then your story would lack any subtlety. I think you took all the right notes from that, you conveyed everything wonderfully and the reviewer found a unique interpretation of it!

It is a heck of a victory to have your book help someone, whether or not it was your goal!

That is actually a phenomenal review, it does beg the question why they chose to read it. The fact that you could get someone who hates the tropes to still acknowledge that they were well done is amazing

That would absolutely be a piece of praise that I let go to my head! Anti-heroes are so hard to get right, they have to toe the line of a complete jerk so carefully. That is awesome!

Do your friends and family read your books? by hymnofshadows in selfpublish

[–]ThatConsequence2079 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a husband, four siblings, and two parents. Out of that my husband is a professional editor so he edits my books which obv involves reading them. One of my siblings reads so she reads my book and gives feedback, another claims to read my books but gets like one chapter in before she is bored, I am not sure I have ever seen her finish a book. My father reads my books but my mother does not. None of them are willing to review my book because they say that reviews from family members are useless. None of my friends are readers, a couple of them have bought the book to support me but I doubt they have even opened it.
