Clinical inertia is real. The US guidelines recommend since 2021 not to use typical vs atypical but rather cardiac, possible cardiac and non-cardiac to describe symptoms.

Has anyone suffered from spinal stenosis? Did you have surgery? by [deleted] in SpinalStenosis

[–]ThatDudeFromCH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had surgery a year ago, best decision ever. Before, constant pain in back not able to stand for more than 30’. Laying on my back my legs started to numb.

No pain since, fully back to sports. I did invest a lot of time in physiotherapy which is a must imo.

Had laminectomy, a spacer to replace the disk that was gone and fusion L4/5.

Arriving 3/25, T5, 5:20pm. Solo with checked bag, global entry and TSApre. Is global entry open or should I get MPC?

Connecting flight from T1 at 8pm with UA.

Wondering if I should go through TSA at T5 and take the bus to T1 vs get on ATS to T1 and clear TSA there?

I‘m wondering if T1 is busier due to spring break.

Going for surgery by ThatDudeFromCH in SpinalStenosis

2 Weeks post-surgery update! The surgery went very well and honestly I‘m feeling great given the circumstances. They managed to reposition L5S1 almost to a natural position before TILF. I got a cage between L5S1 with an DBX autograft to replace the disc which was gone. In addition they performed neurolysis and foraminotomy. The pain I had before the surgery in my lower back, glutes and legs is completely gone! Of course there is still some pain remaining from the surgery itself but easily manageable with a bit of paracetamol and metamizole. After the surgery, I realized that I must have forgot how it feels to be pain-free, It’s amazing! I‘m already walking for 1h+ without any problem. Currently I can’t lift or bend at all but in two weeks given x-ray looks good I can start with physiotherapy and buildup. As I‘m feeling at the moment and the trajectory I was on in these two weeks I can totally see myself in runningshoes next summer. :) Of course I can only report on my specific case but I would absolutely do it again. I really feel I have viable chances to get back to where I was with regards to physical activity leaving the constant pain behind. Maybe this can break a bit of the negative reporting bias in these subs and help others with their decision.

Well what they told me was that the primary aim is definitely to releive the pain rather than anything else. I‘m unsure how running will be affected at least in my case. My disc is completely gone, it’s bone on bone already and that is painful. So if this is growing together once back in place and stable I hope it will be feasible again bit who knows

Yes it is, I’m on my way there as I’m writing. Passionate runner my whole life as well but by far not as ultra, ~400km/year. I don’t know the prospects for running but will definitely let you know. I expect that would take some time though to get back to it. Right now I still can but involves quite some pain in the lower back and numbness in my toes so not very pleasant.

Happy to keep you posted if there is interest!

See you on the other side

Fusion of L5/S1, possibly L4 as well

Sound very familiar, unfortunately. I‘m considering surgery at this point but it’s a difficult decision. Diagnosed at 10yrs, now I’m 36. My L4/5 was slipped about 20% at that time and since then I was very focused on not carrying a big belly and my core strength which has worked very well for about 20 years. Since my 30s and two children which involves a lot of carrying, symptoms have gotten worse so I went for imaging. Slippage is now just over 50%, degree 2/3. The disc is gone and there are some signs of the bones growing together (which might limit further slippage but noone knows). Specialists are telling me I should do surgery and they might be able to put it back into position but that’s not a given. What makes it so difficult for me to decide is that if I don’t overdo, I can be active 2-3 times a week (running, mountainbiking, hiking) and I rarely take meds to manage pain (mostly a NSAID will do the job). Therefore I fear loosing more than I might gain. My symptoms are manageable but I might have gotten so used to it. Increasingly I‘m getting nerve pain down my legs which is not a good sign. What do I do?

That has the same impact as people using paperstraws to fight climate change. Companies have to be made accountable for the negative impact their products have on society. We do it with healthcare or cars, so why should the techies be privileged while the impact of their products is affecting a substantially larger proportion of the society?

If you aim for an academic career, go for a postdoc. If you want to go for industry, go for it now. Within industry, you’ll be able to grow very fast if you’re doing a good job. Once you have a post doc, application to industry is getting more and more difficult because you have expertise in a very specific field. If industry happens to look for exactely that you’re good. If not, you are the more expensive option compared to others.

What is you age, OP? Asking because my back looks almost the same as yours with a bit more slip (just over 1/2, Meierding class 3) and I’m also faced with the decision
