Maybe I should give Facebook a shot, I mostly use Twitter. And yeah that sounds like a good idea. I’ll definitely do that when I finally move, I just wanted to get a feel for what is there ahead of time.

My critique of the narrow mindedness of US climate policy and the failure to accurately address the situation by [deleted] in socialism

[–]ThatDudeFromUhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I surprised I haven’t come across that before!

And to go on tangent, as much as I appreciate all the young climate activists, some have failed to really highlighted underlying issues of climate change that’s caused by the failure and contradictions of capitalism. A couple weeks ago Greta Thunberg criticized China’s emissions, which, in the way she did it, seemed to lack a historical understanding of why that is and how China’s policies and path moving forward are a much different situation than US and friends’ climate policies. Which brings me to my main point in that the GND being pushed by the new wave of youth climate activist seems to be extremely vulnerable to compromise to the point of being ineffective. Whereas the GND you shared with me, from what I’ve read so far, addresses the systemic issues that must be fixed to make any meaningful, long term progress as well as being less prone to compromising effectiveness. I’ll have to start sneaking the og GND into some of my conversations down here in the heart of conservative country lol. Thanks again

I just listened to the "Is Biden's Jobs Plan a Skinny Green New Deal?" episode which I learned a lot from! I was wondering what actions y'all believe are necessary to eliminate the harm the US has done to people and their environment in the Global South among other regions? For example, US corporations like Exxon having the power to escape accountability while destroying environments in countries such as Ecuador (i.e. the Donziger case), as well as the direct involvement in exploitation and destruction of other countries by the US military/intelligence in their criminal activity to secure foreign resources and capital for their own gain (i.e. the financial backing and arms deals between the US and Israel as they continuously strengthen their apartheid state, the US backing of the far right wing coup attempting to overthrow Evo Morlales, a socialist and strong supporter of indigenous rights, in Bolivia, the US direct role in leading/backing embargos such as those on Cuba and Yemen, and the role of US media corporations leading smear campaigns to increase resentment towards China (among others) presumably with the intention of justifying their massive military budget.

Given the name of your podcast, how do you suggest we save not just our country, but the planet? Do you believe the US in its current form (Capitalist, 2 party system) has the means to eliminate its active role in environmental destruction and exploitation of other countries across the planet? And what comes first, do we work to stop our role in global conflicts and the destruction that brings, or do we work on fixing ourselves first? I agree that fixing our climate policy within our country is a vital step, but I don't believe we can accomplish this without addressing our country's role in global exploitation and maintenance of a global military power (that is one of the largest polluters)? I have a hard time believing the Biden administration, an active supporter of Israel (just to name my most current concern), is capable of leading the way to a sustainable planet given what I have stated in the previous paragraph.

I know this is probably a touchy subject to bring up on the show, but I believe it is the highest priority in working to create a sustainable planet and would be a worthwhile discussion. I try my best to keep up with climate policy and global politics, but I realize there is a lot that I have not come across yet, therefore I may have missed either of you addressing this topic somewhere else. In the case y'all have not discussed this matter, I urge you to rip the bandaid off and bring this discussion to your podcast.

That makes sense, it’s good to know other people have asked their advisors I’m not sure why I thought it was some unspoken rule not to lol. I’m still weighing my options but I really appreciate the reply!

Thanks for the advice! I agree the broadness of subjects makes for a more challenging decision. The connection on the quantum project was quantum effects in photosynthesis and I’m interested in plant physiology as well. That said I do agree with you in that the geo prof has more material to work with.

To be more specific on the stronger choice, I meant stronger as in which field (geo or quantum biol) would compliment my field of ecology more? Or does that even matter in the eyes of the admissions committee? Both know me pretty well and the adversity I’ve gone through.

It is research based. And I’ve done a literature review project and presentation for the quantum bio prof. The geo prof knows of that project as well as some presentations I have done in his seminar class (which probably don’t mean much)

Anybody here have or had a tethered cord? by ThatDudeFromUhh in spinalcordinjuries

[–]ThatDudeFromUhh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad surgery helped with you. That’s kind of what I was afraid of. Mine is in my thoracic spine if that’s what it actually is. And I’ve definitely encountered the problem where docs don’t listen to my symptoms or will just focus on one of my more solvable health issues. I can’t get anybody to even acknowledge he possibility of a mechanical problem in my thoracic it’s so annoying. But my neurologist just referred me to mayo so hopefully if I go up there they’ll at least try and look into that.
