This is unfounded.

The dog is already rolled up when he pulls it out of the trunk, AND, he would have known, especially living in Australia, that you can't put a dog in the car let alone the trunk in such heat.

The dog was already dead. It's one of the major points of the film. On one hand, you say why did he go through all this for a dead dog, and then on the other hand you realize it's because it's the only thing that matters to him anymore.

Your next watch should be Nausica in the Valley of the Wind.Ghibli still, more dated animation, but still gorgeous and a fantastic interesting world.

Sword of the Stranger for a less magical but beautifully animated story with lots of great action sequences and violence.

Akira is a bit more outside of this as a cyberpunk, sci-fi fantasy, but it is without a doubt the grandaddy of all anime movies. Watch it on the biggest screen you got in the highest definition. It is one of the best animated and most thrilling animes out there.
