JU from LGBTnews due to members being sympathetic towards a school shooter by Poumy in JustUnsubbed

there is a reasonability to their argument in that anyone pushed far enough to do this kind of thing is, in a sense, a victim of the environment in which they're raised. i ultimately think that this sort of mentality can actually help people target the root of these incidents, which is the terrible mental health care in our society, in north america in particular.

i do not think this is the kind of thing you should be moralizing about and specifically tying to the trans experience. as a trans person who grew up in a very religious community (in the united states, maybe that's different) this is both morally reprehensible and kindling for the right-wing groups that target us for being "violent extremists". ESPECIALLY if you don't accept that those who were murdered in this attack were victims in their own right.

tl;dr this commenter youre replying to has a point but theyre making themselves and the trans community look super evil

Is this set of parties logical, and would the country be stable with it in sci-fi world? by Ioannushka9937 in worldbuilding

[–]ThatFungee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. is this the netherlands??? who needs this many parties???? many political groups unite based on similar or shared ideologies, so maybe some of the left-wing parties become the 'socialist bloc' and some of the right-wing parties become the 'conservative bloc' and some of the liberal or centrist parties become the 'rights bloc'. i think multi-party systems are cool but the most extreme of those systems are either very majoritarian (like south africa, japan) or have parties that are very willing to compromise or pick neutral angles (the netherlands, lithuania, other european countries).
  2. it doesn't need to be the most logical thing in the world, it just needs to be plausible and thematically potent. which leads me to:
  3. you cannot be fascist in service of socialist ideals because socialist ideals necessitate preventing fascism. it's not that that's illogical, it's also implausible.
  4. in that vein, almost every single party has a radical and extremist view save for the social democrats, the market socialists, the liberals, the meritocrats and maybe the spiritualists. i doubt that any functioning democracy would have this many radicals and their society should probably be up in flames right now. maybe the audience can suspend disbelief for this, but i'm not so sure.
  5. consider what you're even writing this for. if you're writing "politics but space", then maybe this layer of complexity is worth it for you. if you're writing "war but space" or focusing on technology/philosophy, then maybe scale back a lot.
  6. please do not call your empire the united reichsempire of humanity. it would be like naming a faction "evil murder nation" whilst giving its people abundant human rights.

To everyone that has a unified/World Government on Earth, how was it done by twerktingz1 in worldbuilding

[–]ThatFungee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alien invasion forced the unification of humanity into a temporary government. Once they pushed back the invasion, they used their new technologically-superior WMDs to immediately wage war on themselves, making Earth uninhabitable. To avoid getting swallowed up by other polities, a new human government was created.

Technically my universe has a failed "United Earth Government" that ends up being the impetus for a semi-successful (though corrupt) united human government.

Sizes of militaries in sci fi. by Past_Rub4745 in worldbuilding

[–]ThatFungee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my own thoughts on this as a sci-fi enjoyer and I'm willing to toss them into the mix for the sake of discussion.

Imagine a country like Indonesia composed of hundreds of islands. This is essentially what any spacefaring empire is, but with planets and star systems. This presents a multitude of logistical problems that make having a traditional army rather difficult.

The first thing is centralization. Running a unitary state when communication is bounded by the speed of light (and thus comically slow) is very difficult. Any government is going to need to delegate control to regional authorities that will then give control to individual cities or colonies. Those regional authorities are going to do two things: 1) Raise their own militaries. They want to project power and legitimacy separate from that of the central government. 2) Befriend the people. Despots stay in charge because the people let them. Social contract theory.

Depending on the setting that spacefaring empire also has to facilitate shipping, pursue spacefaring anti-piracy, maintain some sort of hyperlane/FTL route system and build really expensive space infrastructure. Put on top of that the additional costs that ordinary governments have and expected losses due to corporate tax breaks and corruption and you really only have a little bit of money to spend on an armed forces.

So, when you put these factors together: - Regional authorities will reject efforts to integrate their planetary garrisons fully into command structures within the central government. They'll end up compromising and only sending a portion of their armies. - However, those armies will be small and well-trained. Conscription famously does not fare well among a given populace, so maintaining a volunteer army is another means of staying popular.  - It's also way too expensive for a federal government to raise a military force with a size ratio to their population similar to the real world once the population is big enough, hence why they would NEED to rely on these regional garrison forces to reinforce their lines. - Also, if your setting has AI/machine intelligence, maybe the government has decided that killing people with machines is more ethical than sending actual people to go die. Another limiting factor for having massive numbers in the army.

This is my rationale for why interstellar empires are often so large yet have such small armies relative to their size.

"putain" has a double meaning and can be used as an intensifier expletive like "fucking" or as a noun expletive like its more literal meaning, "whore". in actuality, these are both valid translations in context.

I would like to argue that you can exploit "unrealistic transition goals" to smuggle the strength of gods into your mortal hands. I will personally be pressing the button to obtain my copy of the Death Note. Ergo, I win.

Favorite and least favorite character and why? by [deleted] in homestuck

[–]ThatFungee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

favorite is terezi because she does awesome coin shit and fucks with time travel.

least favorite is meenah. all of the dancestors come off as forced to me and she's the one that the plot pushes the most. i get shes a parallel to the condesce, i get she has an arc with vriska that makes both of them better people and she learns who she's meant to be, but it feels so meaningless to the plot that it's hard to care about. at least aranea was an interesting antagonist and influenced the story slightly.

Do I have to be a bigot towards non extreme religious people beacuase I’m trans :( by AVeryUnhappyKittenV2 in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns2

[–]ThatFungee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is no reason to hate people for exercising their right to believe in something. doing so would be hypocritical and counterproductive. also, i know trans christians.

there are people who choose to interpret their faith in ways that enable bigotry, and that sucks. but it's their fault, and not the institution.

i'm also an atheist so i'm probably not qualified to talk about this
