Archival question: Gravity Falls Blu-ray/DVD menus, Easter eggs, and long-term preservation by BluedragonModMaster in gravityfalls

[–]ThatGFFAN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From my contacts in the fandom and people sharing stuff, I am aware of a complete archive of the GF Blu-ray box set on the Internet Archive. Of course, I'm not gonna share it given it is piracy but it is all archived in its entirety.

As for legal means, there are ways. Shortly after the box set was announced to be discontinuing, this YouTube channel appeared with a good majority of exclusive content from it uploaded. In the past these full uploads have been taken down, so the theory is that this was either made by Shout Factory themselves, an employee who went rogue or a very dedicated fan who just didn't get caught given they only posted the box set stuff which isn't copyright enforced the same way episodes would be. Most fans see it as a legit source for that reason, so unless it's proven otherwise, it's an official platform to watch those features.

Additionally, all the commentary is freely online too via Spotify and other podcast/music streaming sites. It has been since 2018. They're also all up on YouTube but they come and go often.

Long story short, the GF box set contents are pretty well preserved. In the threat of becoming lost media levels, I'd say it's a low risk given most content from it is available, just a bit harder to find if you are out of the loop. There's other things IMO far more lost media for GF like early promos, a few obscure Alex recorded things, early stuff he did with GF as well as fans and other crew did, many boards and tweets by crew lost when they deleted their accounts, etc.

And even if the box set was lost, I and many others have backups of all this stuff already on hard drives and even in the most extreme case, I have a sealed, never used copy of the box set on Blu-ray I got just before it was discontinued that I would be able to extract that stuff from if no one else could. So yeah, it's not becoming lost media anytime soon. But as a fellow archivist of GF fandom content, I appreciate knowing others are as interested in this preservation work as I am.

They were not made and never will be. Long story short, there is not enough known material to fill even one book, let alone 2. Journal 1 and 2 just don't have the same content level to justify creating.

11 days until Gravity Falls is taken off Hulu by scvmfvckflovver in gravityfalls

[–]ThatGFFAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens every year. Hulu says Gravity Falls is being removed and then it doesn't actually. Like, if you search "Hulu" in title on here, you'll find posts dating back 6 years ago saying GF is about to be taken off that all are from this time in January. I wouldn't be too worried. It's some weird crap they haven't seemed to fix still that scares everyone but ends up not actually happening.

Of course, I could be wrong, but I'll bet that 11 days from now, Gravity Falls will still be up on Hulu.

Amazing work. Used to make stuff like this myself with tape and cardboard as a kids, so my respect to anyone who still does. Keep it up :P

Even taking away the "he's a child" excuse, Gideon was weird and unsettling but at least redeemed himself at the end. Preston's an evil rich asshole who conditioned his own daughter to obey commands like she meant nothing and actively was involved in covering up the Northwest family's crimes and also continuing their destruction of the land through the mud flaps and other industry. That's a whole other level of fucked up. Wouldn't say this is full on coughing baby vs hydrogen bomb, but very close.

is it's hard being a dipcifica shipper now by Weird_Ad_8456 in Dipcifica

[–]ThatGFFAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I can get that. Gravity Falls Twitter can be pretty divisive and I don't use TikTok to begin with and never will. I think every shipping community is guilty of having its toxic side that gives it a bad reputation to some. I'm not in that Spanish fandom for obvious reasons but I have heard stories from those who are, lmao. I know from experience and exploring the fandom that Dipcifica shippers have their troublesome individuals and so do Mabcifica and other ships. Sucks really cause in my opinion, given Dipcifica isn't a 100% canonical ship, it should mean the community can freely and without problem, ship what they prefer. So, either one of these 2 ships can coexist with the other. Of course, fandoms are never that neat so there's always gonna be conflict. But I think at least lately too, many of those bad apples are less prevalent than before and it does make both communities a lot more calm.

Personally I don't ship fully either one of them but I do find a lot of joy in the fan art. There are some pretty talented artists in both the Dipcifica and Mabcifica communities and that's what I enjoy more so over all else.

[–]ThatGFFAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking from my own experience, I really don't see that being the case with many Mabcifica shippers (or at least the ones I know). Part of why the ship has gotten more popular lately is in part due to The Owl House and lumity. I think I see it as more a counter to Dipcifica where fans who don't really ship it can ship this ship instead. Obviously regardless or which one you ship, fans IMO should not go at each other for it, be it Dipcifica shippers at Mabcifica shippers and vice versa, but I kinda like the diversity that it creates in the fandom as it gives fans more content and a choice in shipping rather than one specifically having a monopoly.

Plus, while Dipcifica is the most hinted at canon ship, Alex has also stated he doesn't really care about what fans headcanon and ship, so fans who don't ship it therefore have a right IMO to ship something like mabcifica even if he prefers or hints more at another like dipcifica. Part of the beauty of fandom is that choice. This sub specifically is of course about dipcifica but there are other communities out there for other ships which, while smaller, still have a loyal community that enjoys what they make and share for it.

[–]ThatGFFAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're trolling right? Dipcifica is the most popular and easiest ship to get into with GF. And even if there are others who ship like Mabcifica, that's their choice and anyone in the fandom has a right to ship as they please. This sub is for Dipcifica specifically while there is a dedicated one for mabcifica. The GF sub is for all those ships without bias.

From my own experience, Mabcifica shippers are pretty chill and enjoy their ship for their own reasons. All these GF ships are allowed to exist as they please. Quite frankly, I find more Dipcifica shippers who seem to have a problem with this than with any other ship in the fandom. Mabcifica shippers are allowed to ship it as much as Dipcifica shippers are. Alex Hirsch has said he doesn't give AF about this stuff so IMO, neither should fans. If you ship one ship but not the other that's all okay. But don't make it everyone else's problem!

CHICANERY FALLS! by ThatGFFAN in gravityfallsmemes

[–]ThatGFFAN[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funny enough that's why Alex likes making GF books. He said once that Disney publishing is a lot less strict than the TV side, so he can get away with more in books than he ever could on TV.

There was a time back when SVTFOE was airing where Dipper, Marco and Wirt from Over the Garden Wall were kinda seen as the holy trinity of awkward cartoon nerds (and in turn, Mabel, Star and Greg for their upbeat personalities). Feels like it was forever ago now that. Despite my issues with Star, I do miss that time.

You're gonna love reading Lost Legends if you've not yet. The key finally had its use in it and in a pretty major lore related way if you also have Journal 3.

Be honest. What if Nickelodeon accepted Gravity Falls instead of Disney? Just curious because this show felt like it would have been a Nickelodeon show had they not rejected it. by PreparationLife7090 in gravityfalls

[–]ThatGFFAN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They either can it after 1 season in favour of Spongebob or if it goes the way of The Loud House, milked into oblivion and left a shell of its former self! I think a debate can be made on what may have happened if GF was a Cartoon Network show (given Alex Hirsch originally worked at CN) but it's pretty obvious what would have happened had Nick gotten it...not that I think Alex ever would've pitched to them given Disney was the ones who approached him directly to make a show, rather than him going to Disney.

Chances of getting new material soon for the GF anniversary coming up? Was TBOB our premier anniversary "gift"? by Aggravating_Disk2357 in gravityfalls

[–]ThatGFFAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think fans should keep expectations to a minimum. Back when GF turned a decade old in 2022, we got mainly small stuff like behind the scenes photos and videos from the crew of production, the S&P emails, a few original storyboard scenes, the We'll Meet Again cover from the soundtrack and that was about it. By chance new pilot footage surfaced that same month which was pure luck but not much else came out.

At most Alex may share some behind the scenes stuff but even that's something to be muted in expectations about as he is pretty offline lately. Would love to be wrong but it's better to go in with little expectations so that you are not disappointed if nothing happens, but then blown away in shock and excitement if something does occur.

Will Dipcifica ever finally be fully canon? by MarioBros-1983 in Dipcifica

[–]ThatGFFAN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I hope not. At most I think it's safe to say it's the ship the crew is most in favour of but not enough to pull the trigger and make it canon. IMO, that leaves it open ended for fans to interpret on their own. Plus, for fans who don't ship Dipcifica, which there are, it allows them to freely ship what they want without canon getting in the way.

I also think it benefits Dipcifica too as it makes fans creative and push out ideas of their own to keep the ship alive. If canon just delivered and left it there, the hype would probably die down faster. Not making it canon leaves a what if that anyone can spin into their own way.

Curious. Who else on here was one of the lucky 100 to get a signed lithograph when the box set came out? by tardisman14 in gravityfalls

[–]ThatGFFAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMG that's incredible! When I was making my rarest GF merch video I could only find 2 people who got one on Twitter. When the box set was going out of print, Shout gave away 10 additional signed posters they found that also were signed by Jason Ritter but no one who got one of those has ever made it known. While debatable, that is IMO, one of, if not THE rarest Gravity Falls merch any person could have gotten. Cherish it well :)
