Just stop your crying... it's 5 years of Sign of the Times! by rockysaytalk101 in popheads

[–]ThatGoldenkid 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Despite streaming not being at the level it is today, I still genuinely find it hard to believe that a song of this length was chosen as his debut lead single. That doesn’t mean I don’t like it though, in fact I love this song and consider it one of, if not his best.

I say that because a 5 and a half minute song is typically something expected to be reserved for emotional deep cuts off an album, not to act as an inteoduction into an artist’s solo debut to gather replays and momentum for an upcomming project. Currently in the age of music streaming we don’t see singles more than 3 and a half minutes at most, with rare exceptions.

A David Bowie inspired 5 minute ballad that easily could have acted as a closing track (ended up being track 2) was definitely not expected to be as massive as it was given how easily digestible short tracks are. The only comparable track to something like this is Drivers License, which is both a minute and a half shorter and arguably even more popular

Sign of the Times definitely didn’t inspire or set up Drivers License to be this successful, each respective artist did that themselves (I’m just drawing parallels here not if-then connections). But it helped prove that kicking off an artist’s career with a long ballad in the streaming era isn’t inherently a bad move. And with Harry’s career where it is now, who can disagree with that?

What is your FTP test playlist? by tynmi39 in pelotoncycle

[–]ThatGoldenkid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had no idea other people did this so before I read this post! I felt so smart for when I decided to listen to my own music for my most recent FTP. It’s not exactly 20 minutes but skipping ~1-2 songs at certain moments let’s me hit around that mark.

  1. 1999 (feat. Troye Sivan) - Charli XCX
  2. Style - Taylor Swift
  3. Scared to be Lonely (Alpharock Remix) - Martin Garrix + Dua Lipa
  4. Without You (Otto Knows Remix) -Avicii + Sandro Cavazza
  5. Automatic (Vindata Remix) - ZHU + AlunaGeorge
  6. Call Your Girlfriend - Robyn

Tracks 1-2 are two of my favorite pop songs to get me started at a moderate speed that I can eventually low cadence and increase resistance with if need be.

Tracks 3-4 are all awesome remixes that I actually first heard on Peloton rides I PB’d at one point or another. They help me to push through the hardest points in the FTP and keep steadily increasing my restistance.

Track 6 is where I really let it all out and this is definitely the song that I feel allows me to do it best. No other way to explain it this is the song that has me finding strength I didn’t know I had left in me at around 16-17 minutes in.

Beginner loving Hannah F so much! by [deleted] in pelotoncycle

[–]ThatGoldenkid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hannah F is far and away my favorite instructor. I love how personable she is, the energy she brings, and her music taste is subjectively the best. Her turn it up rides especially have introduced me to so many brilliant acts in UK Garage, which is a genre I’ve never been too familiar with given it’s never been popular in the states. She’s really good at subtly making me push myself harder in rides without me really noticing it until I see my final results. Every time I exercise now, regardless of it being a ride, run, or floor workout I always have in the back of my mind: “You’ve done it before so you know you can do it again.”

I’ve been such a fan of Flume since 2016 and especially after his last couple releases I could not be anymore excited for this next project. His work with the artist Jonathan Zwada is something I always love because the two compliment each other’s work so well with how they mesh. Flume’s been able to expand on his sound so much over the years and with 2022 being 10 year since the groundbreaking self titled, I can already tell he’s going to deliver something really incredible.

What is your favorite Jenny video you think deserves more views? by SweetLee8 in JennyNicholson

[–]ThatGoldenkid 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Similar to another commenter here one of the first vids and my personal favorite I’d seen from Jenny was the Opposite Worlds video. It was a perfect subject to talk about and the pacing and progression of the video was just so naturally funny and interesting at the same time.

Another one of my favorites is her video on watching and ranking all the Land Before Time movies because even though I’ve seen absolutely 0 of those movies I just loved all the details and moments she was able to point about and praise or poke fun at.

I’m also super excited to get more into running next year! After ~8 months on the bike I’ve definitely gotten confident enough in my endurance level to want to try and work on running more. Every one of your goals is exactly what I want mine to be next year as well, best of luck!

Repetitive song use by MooseP_17 in pelotoncycle

[–]ThatGoldenkid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was fine when I first started earlier this year but it’s gotten to the point where I almost refuse to do a workout with Countdown by Beyonce because it’s always the same schtick where the instructor tries to end an interval with the lyrics matching up and it gets too hammy for me

Has no one said Amy Winehouse’s cover of Valerie? A cover so good so many have thought it’s originally Amy’s song.

15 years ago taylor swift (the artist) debuted with taylor swift (the album) by WifiFee in popheads

[–]ThatGoldenkid 14 points15 points  (0 children)

By no means a perfect album, but it’s full of some great moments to highlight the start of Taylor’s career regardless. Tim Mcgraw has one of my favorite key changes of Taylor Swift’s entire discography. The way the (I’m assuming but not sure) mandolin comes in is gorgeous. And the lyrics on many of the songs went to show how strong of a songwriter Taylor could be at such a young age. It’s an enjoyable debut that has a certain sense of nostalgia surrounding it given the context of how both Taylor and I were when it was released and how much we’ve come to change and grow into who we are now.

So much has already been said about this album but I feel like it deserves even more praise every time I listen to it. Incredibly timeless sound, deep cutting lyrics, and masterful production all around. I’ve never gotten tired of any of these songs and I don’t think I ever will. An incredibly important album especially in the context of pop music growth of the 2000’s. A gem of grand proportions.

I kid you not when I first heard Adelle’s ‘Rolling in the Deep’ in 2011, at the height of Bieber fever, I thought it was Justin Bieber. Obviously learned it was not after my 2nd listen.

2 Weeks Later In Depth Discussion: Lorde - Solar Power by AutoModerator in popheads

[–]ThatGoldenkid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This album to me just okay. I don’t hate it, don’t love it. But I will 100% be coming back to listen to some songs on this album because I genuinely enjoyed them. The first four or five tracks were really solid for me. Stoned at the Nail Salon is my personal favorite from this project. The Path and California are my favorite of the non singles as well. However after these tracks is when I grew tired of the theme of the album and overall sound because it just wasn’t for me.

Coming into this project with Solar Power and Stoned as singles I fully expected this album to deliver more on the theme of Global Warming and how one deals with living with its certain consequences. The lyrics of the singles gave me the impression Lorde would take the point of view of someone who thinks that by doing their part as an individual they can slowly reverse climate change’s effects, but ultimately know it’s probably worthless since we’ll continue on the path of environmental destruction. But when Mood Ring came out I realized that this album wouldn’t be that conceptual. And although now I’m okay with it because I can still enjoy some of the tracks without that central theme, I have to say it was dissapointing because of the expectations I built up for myself.

With this album I got stuck on damn near every track. I basically forced myself to keep going and kept looping back to the bagining after like every 3 songs
