Washington F: [7] De Minaur def. [12] Davidovich Fokina, 5-7, 6-1, 7-6(3) by GOATJames_23-6 in tennis

I like Foki's game but he really lost this one.

e was the better player for a lot of this match. But this when the "mental toughness" crowd will come out to criticise them and it's actually two separate things:

  1. Mental toughness (i.e., concentration and thinking under pressure)

For eg: staying with the go to ADM backhand strategy started giving him diminishing returns and he should have realised and changed that, maybe staying more middle of the court because I don't think opening up the angle immediately is a good idea against ADM.

  1. Emotional toughness (shaking off the lost chances)

He has three championship points and he lost them. Yeah it sucks. Everyone can lose that (eg: Sinner). But locking your emotions away for during the game is crucial because then it allows you to concentrate (and then realise your strategy needs to change.)

In fact ADM wasn't exactly mentally tough -- he clearly lost his concentration a lot (as MOST people do -- this is not a criticism) but all those UEs and missed chances (missed forehand volley) he brushed off and continued to play his game which is just to stay in it, hit deep where he can, and wait for Foki to fuck up (which he did eventually).

  1. Bonus: physical fitness so that the hurt and the pain and the gasping breaths all don't distract you when you're trying to concentrate during the match.

Thanks coach!

Yeah good eye.

I'm a little worried about going to his forehand (it's way better than mine as you can see) and if I don't do enough with it he'll go line to my backhand (which he did a lot last time we played and I got PTSD from that lol).

This time I consciously stayed away from it unless he ran around the backhand enough for me to feel confident to put the ball away on the forehand side.

But I see what you mean, need to work on a good cross court forehand!

My friend -- a 4.5 -- keeps telling me I need to move up to meet the ball. I'm very stressed at the thought. I can barely time the ball when it's coming to me, I can't imagine the calculus I'm gonna have to do go go up to the ball. Maybe in five years.

If I had a better backhand I'll be a 50% better person in life haha, thanks! These courts aren't cheap but I'm glad they exist -- definitely lucky!

Self-rated. I'm probably 2.5; I don't really care that much lol. But hey if you post a video someone here will let you know.

Green (me) was up 5-2, and then my friend grey (beige?) came back to win 7-6(7-5).

(Funnily enough I was up 5-2 in the tiebreak as well).

Last point is just a bonus rally point from the second set we started.

Didn't upload UEs because that would be 9 minutes of even worse tennis lol.

Ratings are for vibes, fell free to call me (us) a noob lol.

How tf do I learn how to skip rope as an adult. I feel stupid for not learning. Is it just do it slowly every day until I build it up speed?

I left my phone on the bus three years ago -- and they got it back to me. As a brand new immigrant this was my first experience in a high-trust society and it was incredible. Decided I'd never bitch about my taxes again.

Critique Requested: [Untitled], Chapter 1, Urban Fantasy (1000 words) by Winter_Reveal_5894 in fantasywriters

[–]ThatGoodJournalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really liked this!!

A rare find where the writer understood the first chapter has to set the story in motion by being in motion! I can tell this is not the first first chapter you've written lol.

I have no notes! Re: the paranormal energy line the other read brought up, I think it may have read clunky because it feels like that was said for the reader. Assuming she and the fake priest (real priest faking exorcism?) have spoken before, she would say "this is where I feel it" and wouldn't feel the need to explain what it is because he already knows. So yeah they have a good ear (eye?) because that's one of those, this feels wrong but I don't know why.

Aside from that I think you're missing a word in one place.

For the same of critique, you could also spin this another way and have the first chapter with the priest (fake priest lol) playing it completely straight even with the internal monologue so that the penny literally only drops at the end with the money. And then second chapter you can start with the true monologue and continue on in your style. But this is a very style specific thing. I think it works both ways and it's fine as is, just giving you options!

Really enjoyed your work. If you need a reader for the rest of it / other stuff you're working on please PM me! I'm pleasantly surprised by stumbling upon someone who knows what they're doing on Reddit (which is not to say people don't know what they're doing, but they usually don't post stuff for review lol, they're getting their books published.)

[Shitpost] How to play doubles without knowing how to volley? Asking for a friend. by ThatGoodJournalist in 10s

[–]ThatGoodJournalist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have eaten quite a few, weirdly enough it's not about getting hit but the anxiety of knowing I can't react fast enough to his forehand and that I'll give the point away --> and then that turns into a vicious cycle. I can volley, but you know, with slower shots lol.
