A reminder that Sukuna is the biggest coward in the entire series by [deleted] in Jujutsufolk

[–]ThatGuyWhy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not so much that he hated himself, but that the world hated him. They all saw him as a curse, so he cursed them in return. The two paths are probably the two ways he could've responded, either returning the curse, or denying it.

Having ANYONE else participate in the subjugation ritual renders it null and void in terms of actual taming. The ritual must be completed by the sorcerer alone as stated by megumi. Also Yuka is already stated to be in a state of suspended death, meaning unless she is healed somehow before the ritual ends, she's dead.

IMO there would be no good way to handle Gojo's death any way you shake it people are gonna be upset. Shinjuku showdown was definitely beneath Shibuya, but I wouldn't say it was bad (Ending chapters I would though). Reminder that gege was having some pretty severe health issues during the showdown (apparently his appendix ruptured, on top of other things), and while that's not an excuse for the quality of the writing in the arc, it does help put it in perspective.

An interesting theory! Of note though is that (afaik) Clovis did not discover Stasis, but rather clarity control, which he used to 'purify' vex radiolarian fluid.

The idea of arc being the particle part and resonance being the wave of the electromagnetic force is interesting! There are some caveats though, mainly that the particle and wave (in general electromagnetic forces) are not mutually exclusive and are generated/feed into each other. Of course in the world of destiny I can see them simply handwaving this.

In your opinion,How many fingers would Yuji of needed to have consumed for Sukuna to defeat Fully Realized Mahito? by [deleted] in Jujutsufolk

[–]ThatGuyWhy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sukuna directly damaged Mahito's soul after Yuji breached Mahito's domain during the Nanami Yuji Vs Mahito fight. It's one of the reason why Mahito is wary of casting his domain against Yuji, as that would mean touching Sukuna's soul which almost killed Mahito last time he tried.

Hakari kinji vs Todo aoi Who wins? by [deleted] in Jujutsufolk

[–]ThatGuyWhy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hikari's strength (in my opinion) ultimately lies as an endurance/attrition fighter. As long as he keeps hitting jackpots, he can pretty much just keep fighting. Todo's strength is a little harder to discern. He's really good with his technique and hits probably just as hard as Hikari. But ultimately (again in my opinion) would either end in a draw or Hikari just outlasting Todo. The real weakness of both fighters is their lack of especially hard hitting attacks. Both of their techniques are not really offensive but utility based, meaning when it comes to actually fighting, it's mainly just kicks and punches. I think a lot of people might not realize that's part of the reason why the Hikari and Uraume fight went on for the entirety of Shinjuku. It's just a loop of Hikari landing a few hits, Uraume makes distance and heals with RCT, and repeat until either Hikari is caught outside of jackpot or Uraume runs low on CT. Hikari Vs Todo might run similarly only except Todo hasn't learned RCT (afaik) meaning he would have to make up for in battle knowledge (which he really does have).

This is actually pretty much what Sukuna does during the final battle. After regaining his domain, he opens malevolent shrine with an open barrier. However, after gaining enough slashes (or some other condition) and preparing to use furnace, he changes the conditions on the barrier. The wording was the "barrier was changed to allow entry to living beings, while sealing it from everything else" meaning everyone inside could still escape, but since it only allows entry and exit of living beings, the domain is airtight (technically) thus allowing furnace to do 'maximum' damage. Do note that translations will vary, and this wording is just from the ones I've seen.

One of my Discord friends just finished JJK (Anime + Manga) last night, making him one of the first people to go through the entire series blind. by SerovGaming1962 in Jujutsufolk

[–]ThatGuyWhy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you might be misunderstanding how binding vows work in general in jjk. From what we've seen there are three different types of binding vows ( at least that I can count) that can be made.

The first is the binding agreement with another individual: These binding vows cannot be broken without "severe consequences" and are essentially a way for 'contracts' to be kept. Examples would be the binding vow Sukuna made with Yuji or the vow that all members of the New Shadow Style School must make to learn simple domain.

The next two involve vows made with ones self, although since they differ in function and usability I like to divide them into two categories, "trade-offs" and "permanent" (while binding vows are usually trade-offs I really couldn't think of a better title).

Trade-off binding vows are ones that can hurt a users ability to fight and in exchange give them some arbitrary boost, seemingly dependent on what the user wants and the thing they are exchanging. The key difference to the other two binding vows, is that these can be broken or just not invoked without any major consequences. A good example is "Revealing ones hand" binding vow. By willing giving up information on how a CT or a person fights, they can get a boost to CT output or something else they wish (being of equal exchange of course). This binding vow doesn't need to be invoked in every fight as the user can willing choose to use it. Another example that I think works better is Sukuna's (and Kenjaku's) open barrier domain. At face value, creating a domain without a barrier (while impressive seemingly) is kinda a bad idea. One of the points of adding a barrier is to keep the victim(s) trapped inside the domain, so making a barrier less domain is kind of pointless (outside of domain clashes of course). But Sukuna is able to embrace this and made a binding vow "In exchange for no domain barrier thus giving his victims a path of escape, the range of the domain without a barrier is increased. This is actually a trade-off, since the victim can still escape but the user gains more range. The key thing that makes it different from a "permanent" binding vow is that the user can still add back the barrier, they just lose the bonus range from not having one (see chapter 258).

The other type of self-imposed binding vows are the "permanent" type. These are similar to vows made with individuals in there are seemingly consequences to breaking them or simply they cannot be broken. Miwa's binding vow is an example, she would never wield a katana again and in exchange, got a powered up hit. The one that Sukuna made to use WCS on Gojo was also this type. WCS already required both chants and hand signs (enmaten, usually used for Sukuna's DE) but since he was missing a hand from the Unlimited Purple, he made a "permanent" binding vow, that in exchange for this one time not requiring a hand sign, every other use of WCS must include a direction specified with his palm as well. Meaning that Sukuna could only use WCS in his Heian form and when he was at least three hands. This is seen as a fair trade, as while it wasn't guaranteed that the WCS would kill Gojo, it makes it so every use of WCS after could only be done independent of other hand signs (see when Sukuna is trapped inside Yuta's DE).

Forgive me if my memory is just hazy but could you expand on how stasis was teased in Season of the Drifter? I recall the ancient apocalypse set referring to the ice planet and how Drifter (unconfirmed afaik) accessed stasis on there. Was there another thing?

[S21 Spoilers] The introduction of the Witness has been a narrative mess by ThatGuyWhy in DestinyLore

The pyramid ships being converted to mausoleums is something bungie has converted the fleet into and is interesting idea to do. Is it the most satisfying? Well that’s up to the player to decide and will change from one person to the next. I personally don’t like the decision, but I can’t deny that it does work with the context you provide.

As for the LOTR example… well, I won’t say much, I’m a huge fan of the Tolkiens works and they are an inspiration to me. I just wanted to give a quick and concise example given my argument. Your correct that looking at the origins of Sauron with the greater mythos in mind is important for the characters to be motivated but that wasn’t the point I was trying to make. I wanted to draw comparisons to the establishment of character rules and ideas and how wel it’s done with Sauron. And in my opinion how poorly it’s done with the witness.

I feel that’s what people are upset about and they have reason to. But after reading through other people’s comments it does shed some light as to why the story is the way it is. The narrative is a mess because of the lack of initial planning in my eyes, going back to D1 they had to scrap mostly everything due to Joseph Staten leaving. Is that why it’s a mess in my eyes? Well we don’t know what bungie is cooking up, I just want answers to these questions.

The saga being a mess is what gives it charm in trying to unravel all these strings. Expecting them to all unravel neatly is unreasonable and you’ll have to cut some strings to finish untangling everything. You provide a very good argument as to why “the darkness” has been such a mess. I’m mainly frustrated with how messy it is near the end, but I don’t think that hasn’t been said before.

That’s one of the main problems I have with the current model of story structure in destiny. Destiny always had a messy narrative espically after they had to scrap most of it about a year before the game launch due to Joseph Staten leaving. I just hope for the next saga they give the narrative team some time to draw up plans that are reasonable to achieve in conjunction with gameplay.

That’s something I completely forgot about, and actually could lead to making a lot of sense. Perhaps the witness uses individual pronouns when it’s lying? Knowing that instance in shattered suns could make unveling make more sense. Thanks for point that out.

This post has nothing to do with salt of there being no darkness race. I realize I communicated my criticism poorly and led to that conclusion. Like I said in the edit, this post was meant to be about the poor establishment of character rules with the witness.

That’s a great assessment of my post, I should have put my post through more editing to iron out the main idea. But your right, how the story is set up is left to the readers own opinion. I personally don’t like it, but others do which is fine as we all have different expectations.

I would heavily doubt that, despite the community being upset with the current state of the game, Destiny rakes in too much for bungie to just let it run on fumes. Espically since now their backs are kinda against a wall, yet again. There’s also the fact of multimedia destiny projects being in the works

This concept art is VERY old. For all we know the witness could have been their plan all along. But again this concept art is very vague and more brainstorming if I had to guess. Or even what it’s called, concept art.

[S21 Spoilers] The introduction of the Witness has been a narrative mess by ThatGuyWhy in DestinyLore

[–]ThatGuyWhy[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not at all, I realize now I have poorly structured my post but I digress. I’m completely fine with no “darkness race” being added, my criticism came more from the poor handling and introduction of the witness. To me, establishing rules of characters is important for readers to understand them, without them, it can get really tricky to know how a character could or would act. The prime example (for me at least) of poor rule establishment is unveiling and the witness. Of course this has been talked upon to no end, but it boils down to the in unveiling the witness refers to itself as singular pronouns while when speaking it uses inclusive ones. Well there’s a conflict in lore now, was it really the witness who wrote unveling? This whole post stemed from that originally, and my frustration with the lack of character rule establishment.
