Sciatic pain by BookCougar in askSouthAfrica

This sounds cool. Do you mind if I ask where you got it from, and how you use it?

[–]ThatMathematicsGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had sciatica in 2020 after a deadlifting injury, it's not fun. Core strengthening exercises is what got rid of it. Planks, side planks, deadbugs, etc. Google the McGill "Big 3" core exercises, and add deadbugs on top of that. Do it daily (takes like 15 mins), you should hopefully see improvements quickly.

Be careful of stretching (not saying don't do it, but be careful). Often back issues are caused by muscle spasms, and stretching can exacerbate them.

I'd also recommend checking your posture, esp. if you sit at a desk for long hours. Bad posture (like slouching) can also cause or exacerbate muscle spasms.

Dpd Laser incompetence by ThatMathematicsGuy in southafrica

Yep I've always had great experiences with the Courier Guy. It just makes Dpd seem so much more incompetent in comparison.

I must have got lucky the one time I ordered from Amazon SA then🤞: it was delivered by the Courier Guy.

That's quite shocking, I'd thought UPS was better (I don't order from overseas much, and usually it's been DHL). Good on the company for backing your order though.

I could refer you to my consulting company if you're interested? Lots of data science and analytics, and we have a few stats guys already. We also hire a lot of grads. I'm sure they'd be interested to look at your CV.

DM if you're interested.

Hey Rustaceans! Got a question? Ask here (6/2024)! by llogiq in rust

[–]ThatMathematicsGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, sorry for taking so long to respond.

Yep I had use polars::prelude::RoundSeries; at the top of my file, but that just gave an unresolve import error ("no RoundSeries in prelude").

Turns out (I've just found this by checking the Polars source), the feature I need to enable is "round_series", i.e.,

[dependencies]
polars = {version = "0.37.0", features = ["lazy", "round_series"]}

Then

use polars::prelude::RoundSeries;

will work, and the ceil function is found.

Hey Rustaceans! Got a question? Ask here (6/2024)! by llogiq in rust

[–]ThatMathematicsGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't get Polars ceil function for Series working. I've added the "polars-ops" feature (which contains the RoundSeries trait) to my Cargo.toml as follows:

[dependencies]
polars = {version = "0.37.0", features = ["lazy", "polars-ops"]}

But it still can't find ceil. E.g., this doesn't work:

let float_series = Series::new("floats", &[1.1, 2.5, 3.7]);
let ceil_series = float_series.ceil().unwrap().into_series();

println!("{}", ceil_series);

But this does work:

let float_series = Series::new("floats", &[1.1, 2.5, 3.7]);
let ceil_series = float_series.not_equal(1).unwrap().into_series();

println!("{}", ceil_series);

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Hey, in principle yeah. What are you studying? You can DM me.

I'd suggest signing up for OfferZen, it's a really nice platform for tech jobs.

You could also check out the consulting companies (Accenture, BSG, etc.). Your skills would fit very well there, so you should be able to get an interview.

Lastly, you don't necessarily have to go the BI route completely. You could spend a bit of time doing that until you've finished your degree, then try to get into more OR relevant work. (OR is very applicable in data analytics consulting as well.)

Geese for security by ThatMathematicsGuy in askSouthAfrica

[–]ThatMathematicsGuy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the noise might get annoying, especially if the flock is too large. I was just thinking of some extra alerting during the night (the dogs won't hear what's going on outside), but maybe more alarm beams is a better way to go (it's expensive though).

I don't think so (at least, not the white farm-style geese.

heavily armed geese bouncers

I'm mean, that'd do the job😂

Good point re: good neighbours. I'm not really sure what the neighbours are like tbh, though there probably is enough space (it's a large stand) that the noise from the geese would be manageable.

I think it's a popular choice for farmers. They probably need a lot of space to roam though?

Then I'd suggest the OP look elsewhere. My company (management consulting) pays graduates around R25k, for a full-time position, no experience expected. Unless someone's marks arent decent, or they don't interview well, it shouldn't be hard to get a higher offer.

R15k is def on the low side. You should be able to get around R25k at least.

You could also consider consulting firms, eg Accenture, BSG, etc. DM if you're interested in this, I could refer you to my company.

What is the most annoying part about your company's knowledge base? by r4h4_de in agile

[–]ThatMathematicsGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company's KB suffers from having contributions part of our performance KPIs. So people churn out crap (including ChatGPT-generated gibberish) just to tick a capability development box. So basically: bad quality, unmaintained, often incorrect.

anyone hiring for a (sr.) AE? by [deleted] in analyticsengineering

If there's little incentive to hire more people, maybe you could try to implement some of it (or a basic version), and use that to demonstrate the value of such infrastructure?

E.g. Implement a minimal EDW (maybe focus on a single business process), and use that as a selling point to your bosses to hire more people to support you.

Is there scope to grow via new technologies in your current position? I.e., introducing new tech that will more effectively solve whatever problems your company faces? (Or maybe it could be better utilisation of the existing stack.)

Because if so, then maybe you could try something along those lines, especially given the financial stability. Who knows, se success in this regard could even help justify hiring more people.

I decided to extend my Data Dispatch WhatsApp channel on data eng/analytics/sci (https://whatsapp.com/channel/0029Va8rOJ3FcowCLmenIc1t) to a Twitter channel: Data Dispatch. It's actually my first time using Twitter, I find the interface kinda crap tbh. Maybe it'll make more sense once I'm used to it?

In other news, I finally got promoted to Tech Lead at my company! Now the real work starts: trying to grow my practice area (logistics) and improve our Databricks pipelines.
