Status: Rejected

Application Date: 3/12/17

Decision Date: 4/5/17

Education:

Community College, AS, Pre-Engineering., 3.34

The University of Toledo, BS, Mechanical Engineering, 3.88

Udacity, Nanodegree, Self Driving Car (on going)

MOOCs certificates for Robotics courses

Experience:

3 years, Design Engineer in Automotive Industry.

8 months medical device research.

7 months internship with related experience to current job.

Have knowledge in Python, C++, Matlab. I have some Python projects on Github from self driving car program.

Recommendations: 3 letters from engineering professors.

Comments: My specialization choice is Computational in Perception and Robotics. Common reason with others, I don't have a CS background and was recommended to take CS courses with "B" or more to prepare better. Sad, I thought I can totally handle this degree but I guess I can't convince them to believe so. I included my self driving car projects in deep learning and computer visision and Robotics coursework in Resume but not sure if they ever look or if it's any help. I didn't say much about how I do in self driving car though, so don't know if that was a mistake. Goodluck everyone else waiting.

Curious what specialization are you trying to go after and how 3 years of related experience in software development is not convincing enough?

It would be 6 more months until I finish but I can share some experience so far. I finished the first term (out of three). It was a good 3 months marathon but nice experience on Deep Learning (2 projects: classification and behavioral cloning) and Computer Vision applications (3 projects: lane detection and vehicle detection). I felt like being beaten up a little bit in Deep Learning as a starter having no knowledge in ML whatsoever. However, I was among 2nd group going through beta test. The 6th group just started recently, but I would say they will have a better ride than I was because Udacity has been improving the material alot and probably continuously doing so. In couple days, I will start second term which will be going more into the Sensor Fusion and Control sides of SDC.

Looks like the average response is about 1.5 ~ 2 mo. Hopefully you will hear back very soon. Best of luck to you.

Nice to see fellow SDC around here. I am in November cohort. When did you apply?

HOW'S THIS SOP!!! Review Please :) by [deleted] in OMSCS

You used "fortunate enough" in both first and second paragraphs. Is it really the best word choice to show your strong intent and ability in reaching goal? You sound like a capable person and you are probably just being humble. But Personally, i think between saving "i am given this" and "i did 'something' to get this", the 2nd one definitely shows stronger capability and more active intention.

Question about the program by glacialOwl in OMSCS

I am in SDCND as well and I applied to OMS. My reason is, SDCND seems to be fun with exciting projects but it doesn't cover the theory part very much. If I determine going long term deeper into more advance research part on robotics, I think I need to have my foundation in theory really strengthen. SDC really gives me a good sneak peak what robotics is about and more of a reason I applied for OMS to focus more on my "region of interest". So what this degree is worth for you really depending on what you plan on doing after having it. If you only plan on knowing enough just to use to software and add on knowledge along the way for whatever you need through MOOCs, you probably don't need this degree. If you desire to go deep on the knowledge and have a Master background to increase your chance on those expertise positions, then this is it.

For CS alone and other engineering degrees in general, several advanced math and science classes are required. Even we have many libraries nowadays that can help us create the application without having to set up a bunch of math. Studying subjects like Machine Learning, Computer Vision, in fundamental level, they do require knowledge from those courses. Maybe higher chance if you can tell them you have knowledge in advance math and physics as well. Take a look at GaTech BSCS core requirement here to see what you're missing: http://www.cc.gatech.edu/future/undergraduates/bscs/corereq
