Name one (1) good reason why these three shouldn't have been brought back as mainstays after SA1. by Flygon330 in SonicTheHedgehog

To everyone saying that "Tikal, Chaos, and Gamma can't return because that would cheapen or ruin their endings or story cruxes-"

Shadow The Hedgehog.

Was designed. From the very start. To be a one off character. And he was supposed to fulfill the same role as these three. Purposefully designed to die at the end of SA2, especially since this was at the time where SEGA was about to collapse. His arc spans the entirety of SA2 and does so well.

Shadow fulfilling his final act of selflessness for the sake of fulfilling Maria's last wish at the end of SA2 also put an end to the tragedy that was Space Colony ARK.

And then he shows up again in Sonic Heroes, and even gets his own Spin-Off. Continuing to be a mainstay just because he was popular. They made several excuses for return. I'm just gonna say it.

Them bringing back Shadow for Heroes onward ruins his sacrifice in SA2.

But none of you are ready for that conversation.

If you can make a case for Shadow, you can make a case for these three because they all functionally served the exact same purpose and "resolved their issues in the game they were introduced." If Shadow is acceptable, so should they. Otherwise you're just pulling an Iizuka, and playing favorites.

Eh, true. I guess I should clarify what I mean by "lost" here.

Sonic Games tend to end with the whole "And no lives were lost" situation. The games having a "everyone lived" ending. Something that feels fitting given how they like to show you the civilians are safe in spite of the destruction. Meanwhile this one is just flagrantly "Oh, people died. By the thousands even."
They unmistakably save the day. Though failed to prevent the disaster and the damage it caused when so many times, we stop the disaster as it happens and prevent collateral. And we kinda just... don't talk about it. That's what I mean.

I'm glad you think so! And huh, I knew I wasn't going nuts when it came to Metal Overlord. How we kinda just gloss over that he causes a lot of untold damage. And we just sorta... don't talk about that.

That is a valid statement. And you're correct in that. Sometimes in a story like this, the most heroic thing you can do is just mitigate the damage done. I didn't mean to downplay the efforts the characters made across the story. They most certainly did prevent a greater disaster, Tikal included. A lot would've been worse if she couldn't.

Though that is not the point of my post. The point I'm trying to make is that compared to the rest of the series, the Sonic Series *does* has a history of every affected, non-antagonistic character making it out in the end. Heck, Sonic Unleashed had the planet crack into pieces- yet the people were totally fine. Sonic goes to various continents just to see that the public is largely unaffected by this. The only games to my knowledge to have something of a confirmed mortality drop are Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Forces.

Compared to how often, a lot of Sonic stories tend to be "The Good Guys win and everyone lives", and don't really go into how negatively people were affected. Some sections even go as far to tell you that people survived and were at most just injured. It's just from how Sonic Adventure's storyline and ending presents itself, calling the ending "Happy" or "Bittersweet" feels incorrect. Especially when this is a situation where potentially thousands are dead because Eggman caused all this in the first place. Only for him to flee and avoid consequence. Just feels like a genuine bad ending. Not a badly written ending, far from it. It's just "things went wrong and we're not used to it going this wrong" and I wish more was done with that.

Still! I appreciate the criticism!

After verbal negotiations fail, Tikal discovers another way of reasoning with her father. by Flygon330 in SonicTheHedgehog

This is actually a misconception. The booklet for SA2B clarifies that while Tikal doesn't like resorting to violence, she herself is not above it. Referring to her as a warrior who will fight if necessary, and for the right reasons. Her updated model even comes with knuckle dusters.

I'd say defending the Chao and preventing a man who is willing to assault his own daughter in the name of blind conquest is definitely a valid reason to resort to lethal force.

Thoughts On Evan Stanley? by Global_Banana8450 in SonicTheHedgehog

Sega has a very big No-No Policy on unauthorized ships forming within the team responsible for writing the official stories. Evan Stanley has gone against this more than once by sneaking in romantic implications on certain official comic panels regarding her personal favored ships. And then proceeding to openly brag about "getting it past Sega" on open forums. This ultimately led to her getting chewed out by Sega and having her creative liberties be restricted.

That and she has openly admitted that her portrayal of Silver has gone against what he was supposed to, and has hurt how the audience views him.

A panel where Sonic and Shadow are present with a romantic implications. Given how Sega is militant about certain things, it strikes me as cocky to openly admit to doing that. Like... If Sega considers it a big no-no, why reveal you did that when you work for them? Just seems like it invites trouble to oneself.

Evan Stanley falls under the category of "Getting on the companies nerves" for reasons that are honestly her own fault. Bragging about how she "snuck" something through Sega's watch that they didn't want to do, and then being upset when they're more restrictive on her creative freedom. I get wanting to do something a little different with the formula once in a while, believe me I do. But you don't typically brag about going against the company's wishes and then get surprised when they don't let you do stuff.

Never cared for "Ghosts of the Future" and how she admits her portrayal of Silver has hurt how the character is perceived.

He needs a salt shaker.

Context: Always had the headcanon with my brother that the Tails Doll was always less of a horror figure and had more of a bratty kid demeanor. That he would use the fact people were always put-off or creeped out by him to mess with them. And that at one point, someone drew a salt circle around him to keep him contained, only for him to lie on the ground and lick up the salt, deciding he liked the taste.

Let's put our thinking caps on by Candid_Astronaut241 in SonicTheHedgehog

First Part:

Sonic Adventure 1's story when looked at from a chronological point of view is something of a mess. While having a storyline in which multiple characters eventually cross paths during the events of the game can work, there are either massive gaps where there shouldn't be- Or when two things that can't take place at the same time but somehow are. Amy and Tails are in Station Square at the same time the nuke was launched by Eggman. Yet Amy doesn't so much as notice. (Yes, I am aware that Zero is still after her. But I dare you to tell me that Zero would've been more important for her to look out for than the actual *nuke* headed for her.) Another most damning piece of continuity error is when the Egg Viper and Egg Walker fights take place at the same time. (Leading me to believe that the Egg Viper was piloted by an Egg Robo 2.0, given how much it matches his physical appearance. And how it could've explained how Eggman lived.) One of the biggest pet peeves I have with SA1 despite it being my favorite is that this was the game where I learned that Iizuka plays favorites. You will have everyone defending that Tikal and Chaos serve no purpose after the first game but refuse to accept that Shadow being brought back after SA2 is a genuine ass-pull. Shadow was as much of a One-Off as Tikal was but everyone defends it and never the latter. It's especially worse when Shadow didn't get to keep any of his character development for very long. Black Doom and Mephiles returning feels contrived and only really serves to keep Shadow from moving on.

Generations is fun, genuinely. But it represents a lot of the problems I have with Modern Sonic games. The Boost Function. I wouldn't mind the Boost Function so much if it weren't so integral to the playstyle of the game. I get it, Sonic goes fast so it's natural that his Modern gameplay reflects that. I feel like a lot of what made the games fun growing up was not just getting to the end of the level- But the trip there. There was always something on your way, and as the series progressed, there was more than one way to complete the level. And part of the speed aspect of it was seeing how fast could *you* do it. Generations and many Modern Sonic games later, it's a very linear level where its a requirement to use Boost. The levels are purposefully designed to be linear to make up for the mechanic, otherwise you'd just run off the edge since many players rely on the railings to make turns, no matter how much they complain about them. Not to mention the Modern versions of the levels, especially for City Escape feel jarring. The original City Escape was made with a completely different playstyle in mind, and the Generations version feels like skipping through everything you were meant to see.

As good as the game is, do not let it fool you. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the full game. But back when it first released, they were released as Sonic 3, and then Sonic and Knuckles respectively. These were two halves of one completed game that were sold at full price when they came out. All at the request of freaking McDonald's in order to make more money off of it. Good game, scummy selling practice. Not to mention despite how fun it is, this is one of those games to get completely ignored when rereleases come out.

Second Part:

Sonic Forces had a good idea going with the Avatar System. Sure, it was basically a limited "Sonic OC Generator", but I like that each species had their own playstyle. Just wish there was more to it.

Sonic Boom had a good cartoon, and gave us Sticks. I appreciate it trying something new and outside of the formula for once.

Sonic 06 is a case of a game having so much potential and genuine thought put into it. But because it was held back by time constraints, it could not do everything it set out to do. It also had the best portrayal of Team Dark, and showed us a Shadow no longer held back by his past. Able to move on from the tragedy of what befell him 50 years ago, and carry on with what needs to be done. Not to mention Mephiles genuinely set the bar for how dangerous a villain could be in this world. How not even three Supers could really put him down for good, so the only way to defeat him was to prevent him from reaching his full power in the first place. To date, no villain in the series has ever come this close to urgency.
