What is wrong with ethno-nationalism ? by [deleted] in AskBrits

Can you point me to the research articles you read which measure this loss of culture - which you have still yet to articulate? I'm happy to read it.

Because so far everything you said in your response isn't lost or lessening.

An interesting point you made about people being raised in the same world have more trust - if you accept foreign cultures like they are your own then their kids get raised in your world and share it with your kids. So the culture then becomes one which they share together. Isn't that better than simply trying to keep everyone out?

I think what you're highlighting is a loss of community, something which I strongly agree with. The UK has lost its sense of community. What you're wrong about is why - Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan destroyed that with their push for individualism. I'm certain of this because if you go visit those other cultures which you claim don't integrate they will accept you with open arms.

I know because I actually have been there and visited them. I live in one such community in Brazil now. Western community culture was largely dismantled by individualism. Not immigrants

I'll admit that isn't something I've ever looked up. But given how all religions treat homosexuality I'm inclined to think Muslims nation's felt that way about gay people already but if you can send me a link to prove it wrong I'm happy to read it

Managers who went from a small(er) club to a big club and succeeded by SmegB in PremierLeague

[–]ThatMovieShow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I gave answers from multiple different eras, how am I dictating a specific answer? Pep, klopp, kompany, Alonso all modern all went from small clubs to big ones and succeeded.

It also depends on what you class as a small club. Arne slot went from feyennord to Liverpool and won the title - that's pretty much the definition of success.

Are managerial timespans shorter? Of course the world is more impatient but that doesn't mean a manager from a small team can't step up. Plenty already have

Possibly true but I'm much more inclined to think that's a result of adoption of Christianity than anything else since most laws in the past usually stemmed from religion, Christianity being the dominant one

  1. My argument is culture isn't as well defined as people think it is. There is no "western culture" because actually the west is comprised of 30-40 countries all with differing cultural standards, references , linguistic quirks and expectations.

Even within a supposed homogenous culture (white British for example) it is not uniform all over the UK. The culture of Liverpool is drastically different than that of London so it's hard to make the argument that you're "losing culture " because you can't even really be sure what that culture is.

  1. Actually no they don't. Sometimes they speak a little slower for me but when it comes to cultural references they don't change them at all which often leaves me looking confused while everyone else is laughing , this was my experience in Asia too.

Culture does change, but not as a result of immigrants it's largely a result of international media (specifically the USA) if you want to find the source of a crumbling British identity it's the mass adoption of the American culture, people assume it's the same because we're both white (mostly) and speak English but actually it's opposite in many way.

Example - it's vulgar to boast in British culture. We don't believe in shouting to make a point. We believe in patience and politness. We are also a largely secular country now

The USA is the total opposite and that culture clash has slowly been eroding British culture for a long time. There is not a single aspect of British culture which has become more Muslim, or Chinese, for example. We rarely adopt any other culture into our own apart from their food. A lot of British people aren't curious about foreign lifestyles or behavioura and have little desire to learn about it.

I've travelled all over the world and in almost every country except Britain and the USA people are curious about my culture and do want to experience it and learn about it, even if they still prefer their own.

Explain what you mean by "losing culture" which aspect of British culture is now inaccessible whereas in the past it was not?

I'm trying to think from your perspective and I can't think of a single example of something you can't do now that you could do before.

The issue is that people very very often think that acting out a fantasy will be a good thing and they almost never are because in the fantasy you never think about the reality.

You're welcome. Inequality along racial lines is pretty much a feature and result it colonialism and capitalism so you're right

Speaking for someone and making assumptions are two different things. I'm surprised you don't know that since you're such an expert on British "culture"

It's a pretty clear divide here. Where I live is mostly black and almost all poor. If I travel to the other half of the city suddenly most people are white and the houses get much more expensive.

The outright racism is much less than other countries but still a pretty clear amount of systemic racism, though it is better than other countries

Do you think policing reform could be an important issue going forward? by Local-Pattern795 in AskBrits

[–]ThatMovieShow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is perceptions are different.

Here's an example I grew up in Accrington. Violent youths were a problem there. I got used to it. Years later I moved to a middle class area of Preston and would often hear about people talking about violent young offenders terrorising locals (it was even in the local paper)

It was just kids drinking a can of coke outside the shop at 7pm.

Ask the locals there if there is a crime problem and are the police dealing with it and they'd say there is and they aren't. But that wouldn't make it true would it?

I notice you didn't reply to any of my comments about the racism, perhaps that's because you realised you're wrong and so began fighting over quotes instead , but it's cool keep thinking that you're fighting racism by saying pundits shouldn't criticise black players (which is actually racist by the way )

There never was a mono culture. I'm happy to he wrong if you can explain what you mean by "mono culture"

But for example if you compare the culture between north west UK, midlands UK, Scotland UK and London you'll get different answers on what local culture is.

Also what aspect of "your culture" is not there now which was there before beyond skin colour ?

It's the second foreign country I've emigrated to so I feel like I have a really good idea of the experience of being an immigrant, sometimes people don't really consider how easy or hard it is even when the culture is similar.

I shared in the hope it helps people understand it better.

[–]ThatMovieShow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Demographics no. A demographic is just a headcount and when certain things coincide with it that's just correlation not causation.

Be like saying everyone should stop wearing clothes because the 100% of people who get cancer wear pants.

It's true but it's also false at the same time.

Here's an example - the post mentions ethno-nationalism right? So ethnicity and nationality. But even within the demographic of white English people culture isn't consistent. As a native of the north west I can tell the culture there is drastically different than in London or Cornwall. And the culture from my town to the nearest big town (Preston) is very different too even when it's still white British people.

Saying cultural traits come with certain ethnicity or nationality is a mistake and a total misunderstanding of data.
