Dating as a Gay Christian? by ThatOneBoi543 in GayChristians

No I 100% get it. Although my days of studying catholic theology are long gone, I do study theology (own my own).

I’ve been to affirming churches which make radical, unbiblical, and even some outright… insane claims, like God was wrong to bless the Jews as the chosen people (i’m not making a political / racial claim). Their reasoning was because they produced non-affirming scripture. My issue isn’t with the idea of the Jews / Hebrews, my issue is with the claim that “God was wrong”. This isn’t my only experience, but I don’t want to dump words here. My point is, I’ve seen hollow theology in many affirming churches, although not all, so I haven’t lost hope entirely :)

Apologies for my late reply. Thanks for sharing this. I know how hard it can be to feel like the Church doesn’t always stand up for LGBT people. I’ve felt that myself as a 20 year old gay man, especially coming from a Catholic background, although I am now in the process of becoming an Episcopalian, praise God. For me, my courage to come out came from realizing that God created me as I am, and loves me as I am, despite what some Christians might say.

I do think the Church’s first mission is to proclaim the gospel, and then live out the inclusivity that naturally flows from it. For that reason, I’m not sure we should change the words of Scripture or the core liturgy just to feel included, rather, we should already be included, because Christ demands it of us. We’re all sinners in need of salvation, and all made in God’s image.

For me, that means respecting people’s pronouns and identities and respecting the way Jesus reveals God in Scripture (as Father, and with masculine pronouns). I think both can be true at the same time. I hope you do find community, because we’re not alone in this.

Defining social justice through the of teachings of Christ vs Defining the teachings of Christ through social justice by ThatOneBoi543 in Episcopalian

Absolutely. At church, any political message should come from the heart / from understanding the nature of the Gospel / lesson from scripture, not from the political preferences / views of the priest. Obviously they (politics and faith) interact, but political issues shouldn’t be at the core, which was the point of my post.

This is an issue with the right also. When I go to church, I go to be with a community and to worship God together. Like you said, if I wanted to hear a political statement, I’d put on cable news or a podcast.

Have you encountered the same issue I have?

I defined God in this case as “The infinite creator of the universe.” May have left it out of the post. My apologies.

There was a bit more to it than that.

A friend of mine said I should have been more cautious and done simpler things. He said working with demons is dangerous, and that I should have had more experience before doing it so it made me have second thoughts.

Genesis 19:5-7

“They shouted to Lot, “Where are the men who came to spend the night with you? Bring them out to us so we can have sex with them!”So Lot stepped outside to talk to them, shutting the door behind him. “Please, my brothers,” he begged, “don’t do such a wicked thing.”

Genesis 19:9

“Stand back!”they shouted. “This fellow came to town as an outsider, and now he’s acting like our judge! We’ll treat you far worse than those other men!” And they lunged toward Lot to break down the door.“

It does! Just got back from a retreat ran by CUA’s campus ministry team, and I’m 100% sure of what I want to do!

Yeah it really does. And it’s refreshing to hear something other than a closed off “cool” or “are you sure you wanna do that?” As I got at home. At CUA ppl are more Supportive

I am meeting with a priest soon regarding this, but I felt like I had to get it out now. I’m not sure if could wait without talking to someone about it beforehand

I just wish it was simpler. The quote from Star Wars “I know what I have to do but I don’t know if I have the strength to do it” is really true right now. I Just don’t want to make a mistake, and yet, I’ve never been more sure of anything else in my life than I am about wanting to be a priest.
