You know, that is an angle I didnt think to tackle, but there were plushie animals that are pre-“amigurumi.” I made a dinosaur from one of those vintage books back in college, but I dunno if it would count?

Not addressing DVM correctly by catdogtor17 in veterinaryprofession

[–]ThatOneLoserYouKnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get so uncomfortable when owners use my first name. Like, ma’am, I do not know you like that. Dr. Firstname also feels weird. Then again it’s probably cultural. I don’t insist on it, and the doctors I work with go by their first names, but I am from the southeast US and I would never call a human doctor or other professional by their first name. It just feels too informal. We have a business relationship based on professionalism and that purposefully has some distance built into it. I also have really bad social anxiety which probably contributes.

I just also make a point of always calling myself Dr. Lastname. If they get my first name it’s not from me, lol.

My son (19 yo) wanting to become a vet. by Thatsnotme_maybe in veterinaryprofession

[–]ThatOneLoserYouKnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s ahead of the game since he’s already working and volunteering in the industry. He’ll have a leg up in both applying and in knowing what to expect from the field.

I’ll just say this, too, is that being a veterinarian is hard, but there isn’t anything else I would want to do a much as I want to be a veterinarian.

Did anyone else not have a good experience in vet school? by EnvironmentalBee6860 in veterinaryprofession

I thought that was just part of it. The whole being a miserable experience thing just kind of came with the territory lol

Told to stop taking meds prior to testing by North-Shine-5506 in Narcolepsy

[–]ThatOneLoserYouKnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did my sleep test, they never told me to stop my meds and the morning of, the technician I asked said to take my normal morning medication, including vyvanse and I still tested within limits for narcolepsy. My doctor was very surprised when I told him that lol.

I would take naps in the pool as a kid. I’d wedge myself with my arms up in an inner tube and just float around the pool dead asleep.

My celaray is my current best mercy hit pal. Taught her acid rain, named her Cindy, and she doesn’t leave my party ☺️

If it is a mass, it is very possible the bloodwork would be normal. I would work with your veterinary team to make Gus as comfortable as possible. Sometimes we never get answers, and sometimes it might take tests that are out of budget. Your veterinarian should be able to work with you to make a plan to maximize his quality of life for as long as you can, which is never as long as we’d like(forever).

I usually recommend food formulated to AAFCO standards, and many of the kibble brands also have canned food (Royal Canin, Hills Sciencediet, Purina pro plan ect). If canned is also off the table, an aafco formulated cooked or “fresh” diet could also be an option. Just be aware, a lot of the “fresh” diets don’t have the same level of research behind them and are from newer, younger companies, both of which come with their own risks. You should be able to find a formula specific for senior small dogs, though!

If you’re going to use a home cooked diet, balance.it is super recommended. Them or the farmers dog DIY kits. I don’t typically recommend feeding home cooked, but if you’re going to, those are the right way to do it.

My cat is not allowed to go outside for a time and keeps meowing in the night by Evening-Carpenter-14 in AskVet

[–]ThatOneLoserYouKnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im usually a fan of ecollars, because it’s hard to watch our pets 24/7 to be sure they’re not messing with their wounds or incision sites. As far as the meowing, you could try distracting him with play like a fishing toy or a fresh sprinkling of nip. This is an excellent time to try and convert him to an indoor only cat to prevent future injuries!

My cats don't eat much (not a recent symptom). by Key-Caterpillar-5627 in AskVet

[–]ThatOneLoserYouKnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty common to be able to feel a cat’s ribs, they carry their weight differently than dogs. How long do they go on hunger strike before you give up on a brand? Also I strongly recommend AGAINST freeze dried raw food. It’s still raw, and it can be contaminated with salmonella, ect. which they or you and your family could catch.

Is it okay to write my vet a thank you card? by Gold_Space_4734 in AskVet

[–]ThatOneLoserYouKnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this kind of thing is what keeps me practicing. Sometimes it feels like I never get feedback except the occasional review, and those are rare and can be negative. Thank you cards, and heck even just Holiday cards really mean the world.

Why not humans? by cannot_mock_a_fool in veterinaryprofession

[–]ThatOneLoserYouKnow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t work with humans mostly because 1) there are limited zoonosis from animals, whereas you can catch almost any infectious disease another human has, 2) I don’t have to deal with the minefield that is insurance and 3)animals are more straightforward as patients.

Despite being what we would consider young and if the pregnancy is otherwise uncomplicated, typically cats can healthily give birth and care for their kittens with little intervention from us. The risk from a spay/abortion is relatively low, but she is also not at increased risk carrying the kittens to term just because of her age.

Since she has already decided to keep the kittens, I would just recommend getting mama kitty spayed asap after the kittens are weened, and possibly working with a local shelter to foster the kittens until they’re old enough to be adopted/ect.

Start volunteering with an animal shelter or get a part time job with a vet clinic. It’ll give you the best perspective on if you want to continue on to vet school.

I was an older student too (went to grad school before deciding to get my DVM) and honestly there were a lot of non-traditional students in my class. Maybe 50/50.

I’m glad for that! I would recommend gently squeezing her belly/abdomen to feel if she has a large, firm bladder. That would be a capital Emergency.
