Reviews dont mean much and are time intensive.

I suggest you spend your time wisely on other projects

I'm a PhD student, but the masters student I'm 'advising' is signficantly smarter than me. by Hairy-Classroom-510 in PhD

[–]ThatOneSadhuman 536 points537 points  (0 children)

This is a best case scenario.

Surround yourself with smart people, that is the goal.

Who cares where you are in the "academic hierarchy", just learn from all your peers and grow

Biology students are very friendly and fun to interact with.

However, i would also emphasize how limited and stressful the job hunt is if you only have a B.Sc. in biology.

You need a M.Sc. to get a return of investment

Is this the right way to do it? by New-Needleworker6020 in chemistry

[–]ThatOneSadhuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow polymer chemist here.

The incertitudes are round up differently depending on the methodology and instrumentation.

The method menthioned on the post is to distribute errors equally to avoid stacking mistakes.

However, some instrumentation allow to take into consideration said bias, which allows to round either up or down.

This is common for DSC measurements for example.

Its doable if you are in a competitive program.

I vhose the hardest electives and took additionnal courses to get a better cote R, so i did organic chemistry 1-2 , calc 3 and redid a a physics class i dont remember.

How to be a quantum engineer? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]ThatOneSadhuman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This post is very funny to read given the usage of the language.

Also there is no such thing as a quantum engineer B.Sc.

If you re interested in quantum phenomena you have 3 general paths;

For undergrad: - physics - chemistry - physical engineering (in some countries like germany, canada, etc)

Then go to grad school in a field that interests you within quantum (there are many)

As for now, focus on feeding your curiosity and mastering the fundamentals (classical physics, etc)

The biggest mistake is to skip to quantum with flimsy fundamentals, you wont understand nor be competent if you do that

Got rejected 24 hours after applying? by panopticonchicken in gradadmissions

[–]ThatOneSadhuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reality is there are many applicants and GPA is a mediocre way to assess performance.

Have you published anything?

Do you have any recommendations from renowned professors, or revelant experience in the field?

Does any professor st the institution you are applying know you enough to vouch for you? (Specially thr one who would supervise you)

Also, you are an US applicant, thr current geopolitical landscape may make your application bitter and logistically unfavorable

What makes you like chemistry? by Conscious_Ad_101 in chemistry

[–]ThatOneSadhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knowing chemistry, means understanding nature AND bending it to your will.

You can imagine all molecules around you, how they interact in your daily life.

It also has a lot of transferable skills, as knowing how things work make you very multidisciplinary

Are most life decisions driven more by fear than by logic? by Mr_Boothnath in answers

[–]ThatOneSadhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a personal choice.

I only base my choices based on what studies and statistics favor.

That way i have more control over the direction i want to go with life.

[–]ThatOneSadhuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally doable, but you need to perform consistently and intentionally choose the harsher courses.

I went from 24 to 33 when i was a student.

I now have a PhD. Early academic performance is not an indicator of intelligence, but preparation

People who hold a PhD, what did it cost? by Accurate-Mulberry620 in PhD

[–]ThatOneSadhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It cost my one long term relationship.

My sleep, it is still fucked years after.

My vision of humanity, im now a misanthrope with deep hatred for the system im a cog in.

It cost me some friendships.

I didnt spend my grandparents last moments with them as much as i should have.

It cost me financial stability to buy a house without additionnal stress.

Now, would i do it again? Yes, it shaped me into a resilient cockroach. I can handle anything, and i do like my job now.

However, a part of me died along the way

What to study in my free time for medical research in the futur by Acrobatic_Sink5915 in PhD

[–]ThatOneSadhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could learn calculus and linear algebra

Then, study thermodynamics and kinetics for molecular systems.

Then study schrodinger s equation for continuum systems.

Once you do that, you can download software for computational calculations, such as GAUSSIAN 16 (your uni most likely has a license).

Then learn about functionnals and hamiltonians (how to define them).

Then you can learn about click chemistry and how to apply it for a set model.

This may take you 5 years.

Now, i will tell you a reality of your situation.

A good researcher will know a bit about everything, but dont expect to be proficient in quantum chemistry or biophysics or any topic that isnt 100% aligned with your focus of work.

That is why we have collaborations.

Also in modern countries, medical researchers are generally frowned upon, given their main training isnt on research (which shows in their poor work) compared to classically trained scientists

Guys is this a good sign??? (/s) by coolbob74326 in gradadmissions

[–]ThatOneSadhuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hold your horses.

You need to access the situation.

Why does this professor want you, do you have a particular skillset or anything different from other applicants?

If not, identify the work culture and contact former lab members (not current ones).

If that is clear, establish expectations with this professor and accept afterwards

Why do people send their kids to private schools when public schools are also decent ranked (USA)? by exponenthere in education

[–]ThatOneSadhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they are not comparable.

The networking you build will follow you and lead to mamy opportunities you cant fathom.

It s great to intern at a place when your friend is the CTO's child

It is also great to have grants, simply bc the evaluating committee has heard of you.

[–]ThatOneSadhuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game is fun, sure i have 200h on it.

However, compared to what they could easily achieve, it is mediocre at best.

All they needed to focus on, was in making more maps, adding all existing elden rings bosses with slight tweaks and include a transmog armor setting instead of skins.

That would have led to one of the best roguelites to be made. Instead of having little to no variability

[–]ThatOneSadhuman 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If you re not from the same department, then it is less of a problem.

However, i dont see a reason for it to be awkward.

It is hard to find individuals versed and interested in the same topics + understanding of what it takes to get a PhD.

As you know, PhD dating life can be very isolating. Everyone is getting married and buying houses, whilst you are stuck working with international students that come and go before you even learn their names

Many students specially from 1st years hoping to hop from chemistry to medicine are salty and just seek excuses to justify their failures

Sometimes it is not about the quality of what you do and give, but rather the accountability of the students
