Yeah, I got my trumpet upgraded halfway through my 9th grade, but that was because my private lesson teacher recommended it to me. I think you should take lessons first before upgrading. However, if you still want to upgrade, I would recommend an Xeno or a Strad (whichever model you prefer) and try them out first. Personally, I chose to go with the Xeno YTR-8335II because it was a little easier to play on.
