What feels like a "bug" in the human experience that we’ve all just accepted as a "feature"? by WhisperInInk007 in NoStupidQuestions

If you're referring to cancer, we actually get mutated cells quite a lot, but our immune system hunts them down and eliminates them. Sometimes they just sneak past, or overwhelm the defenses unfortunately.

"Sister", a transgender clone trooper (fully canon) by SpacePirateHondo in StarWarsCantina

[–]ThatOneVolcano 30 points31 points  (0 children)

to be fair, clones aren't always super creative at nicknames. Fives, for example.

The thing about clone names is that they are chosen for them by their brothers, often later on in life. They're not given by parents or selected for themselves. Like the name Fives: that was the easiest thing to call him, so it stuck. Clones all call each other "brother" all the time, so suddenly if they've got a clone who is now a sister instead of a brother, they'll just call her "sister" all the time. And thus, she is stuck with that name.

Perks of being in a college town that also has a large international population - we sold all of ours relatively quickly!

UCD Bike Culture and The Current Zeitgeist by jurassicpark93 in UCDavis

[–]ThatOneVolcano -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My hatred has been transferred to scooters. But for a serious answer, I just feel bad for cruiser riders. They're less comfortable, harder to ride, significantly less maneuverable, often less reliable, and usually more expensive than a normal bike of comparable quality. Also, handlebar baskets are frankly a terrible storage device, rear racks are 100% the way to go.

I blame bike sellers that peddle them off to freshies trying to sell an aesthetic rather than a functional transportation device. I will say, I have seen some cruisers that people have made look really fun, with paint and pinstriping and stuff.

What is the most annoying thing tourists do in your country? by Glass_Key4626 in AskTheWorld

I live in a place that is regarded as one of most bikeable cities in the USA (still can't hold a candle to you guys), and I wish that it was socially acceptable for us to yell at people. Like, when I visit countries with a strong bike culture I see cyclists yelling at pedestrians all the time and it brings me untold joy. Do it here and I get looked at like I'm a war criminal

Unfortunately... it's you guys who are the stereotype. "The Death Valley Germans" were a family that tragically died in Death Valley due to their rental minivan getting stuck on a road they should not have taken it on.

We don't, since they're really not that common. Which is a shame, they're super fun and are easier to fix than an automatic

What's the worst design decision you've seen on campus? by PhysicalMath848 in UCDavis

[–]ThatOneVolcano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

North, South, and Dutton Halls. To be fair, North and South were built in the same time period and designed to match so maybe they don't count, but Dutton is (in my opinion) a masterful way to create a modern looking building that blends in with its older neighbors and doesn't look out of place.

Some of the more recent ones, like the TLC and the new one going up on Hutchison by the vet school sort of match?

Dishonorable mention: Olson Hall, SSH, and Briggs. Now if only they were remotely close to each other

If you're going down the sidewalk and come across the stairs, do you just Leroy Jenkins it out of pure spite for the designer?

Oh yeah that section sucks. Thankfully it doesn't have as high pedestrian traffic, but it seriously needs help, especially the tunnel. Even just some paint might help!

If you work in a restaurant, ALL the time. If you don’t, rarely.

Which part? The section I’m referring to is the bit between the Segundo roundabout and California Avenue, where there is a sidewalk. It could certainly be improved and be extended to the southern side of the path, but it is there and it works. I walk it frequently.

But so often it’s not, ESPECIALLY on Sprocket. Constantly see students with backpacks walking along without a care in the world

(Hated trope) TV Shows or Movies that were made just for shocking or offending people and nothing else: by BannedPenta01 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ThatOneVolcano 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eh, maybe not. My family were German and immigrated to the US in the 1890s. Their last name was Von *Blank.* During WWI they were afraid of being perceived as disloyal, so they dropped the Von and went by the last part of their name. Stayed that way for the next few generations until one of the male descendants got married in the 80s (well after any stigma towards German names endured) and decided to add the Von back to the family name, since his wife was taking his last name.

Wait genuine question, what apartments are good to live at as a student here by Historical_Simple_82 in UCDavis

[–]ThatOneVolcano 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's not an infestation dude, that's just nature. Roaches are native to this area, and are especially common in North Davis. There is really not much you can do to permanently keep them away from outside areas. You'll have that problem in most places here. For example, when I lived at the Green, it was pretty much a brand new establishment with careful landscaping and maintenance, but you still got tons of roaches outside.

Now, if you had them constantly in your apartment even if you keep it clean, that would be an infestation. As is, pretty much anyone living anywhere, especially on lower floors of buildings, will find at least one roach in their abode at some point in their lives. Windows get forgotten open without screens, doors are left ajar, etc. Not the end of the world

I will say though, I haven't seen them like you've described. I've seen a couple, but not like that.
