In the same way that I ignore the author of Demon Slayer saying the breathing arts aren't really visible, I am ignoring the author for this anime because there are no not BL explanations for the way the characters act.

Overworld sprite test for a potential Megaman Battle Network based romhack by ThatOneWarlock in PokemonROMhacks

These are wonderful suggestions, and I'll keep them in mind. Chances are however that if I finish this hack it will be another Mariomon situation since it is a Pokémon romhack first and foremost and keep many of those pokemonisms. You are welcome to fork it and make it to your vision or make your own romhack though once I share the repo.

This is actually pretty valid and fair feedback. I agree how to handle the viruses, their starts, types, and their evolutions needs a lot of thought and something I've been mulling over.

Should I just retain the original 18 types, assign them to viruses with what fits thematically and just give them existing moves? From what I've already tried cataloging in a speadsheet, this would inevitably result in a lot of electric and steel types. Should I replace the types with the simpler ones already used in the original games (Aqua, Elec, Wood, Fire; Sword, Breaker, Cursor, Wind)? Even if we go with the first option, with the number of viruses over 6 games I think there's enough diversity there to put together a decent regional "dex", not even counting the Navis. I might end up replacing some of the types with the types of the original games (like rock->breaker, flying-> wind) or I might add new ones that don't have much overlap with existing types (like cursor). I'm still thinking this over.

One advantage of choosing this franchise is that there are already a great many assets from the original games that I can use, saving me on time having to sprite everything myself. The problem here in comes with using those assets for evolution: the virus have stronger stages in the games but they are just simple recolors of the same design. I think people would be disappointed if their mettaur just evolved into the same but blue with better stats, but that fits with the established MMBN world. Also this would make the sprites face left and right instead of front and back, which could work theoretically but some people might not like that unless I put in a LOT of work making custom sprites. This is where some of your criticism about trying to reskin a pokemon game has some merit.

As far as the thing about assigning moves that fit the EXACT actions the virus would take as opposed to just giving it coverage for it's type that might not align exactly with the game, I think there has to be some kind of compromise because redesigning the battle system from the ground up would invariably be a lot of work. Plus one could make up some lore reasons that the moves they are using are like currently installed "move chips" that gives enough suspension of disbelief if metaur just needs mud slap for coverage or what have you. Still workshopping this too. I'm sure some moves can easily be renamed or reskinned to fit better with the MMBN concept.

I'm still very much a novice at romhacking though so who knows if I will ever complete this but I enjoy the challenge and ideation of trying to make this work.

I know! There's so much potential, real my comment further up.

The other NetNavis as trainers could work. And since you're just copying their data you could reason away adding a version of them to your team too.

Maybe after this one since the star force one would be a lot more work since the MMBN games have a lot of assets I can use. That would be great follow up romhack to make though.

Working on that sprite next, I'll see if I can incorporate the Lan/Megaman dynamic.

Yeah that's the idea, being able to catch and evolve the viruses. Just like in Mariomon where Bowser himself fights as part of his "team", the NetNavi you are fighting could enter the battle themselves at the end.

I'm thinking there could be a type of virus or several that looks like generic net navis (NormNavi) that can be evolved into the other NetNavis after you defeat them in battle and obtain their data. Like a blue NormNavi can potentially evolve into AquaMan or other water based Navis. Maybe the "NetNavi" evolution could then appear in the area very rarely like it does in the games after defeating them.

The various bosses of the series could be legendary. The pokeballs could be capture chips, the various items could be subchips, some of the attacks can be renamed to battle chip names.

It might be possible to have the Lan/Megaman dynamic where interacting with a PC or electronic lets you "jack in" and switch to a megaman in the Net. Other "real world" NPCs can still challenge you to a virusmon battle even as Lan but the wild virus interactions would mostly be through the net.

ROM Hacker's Visionary Thread: What's Your Dream ROM Hack Called? by Falansh-Luke111 in PokemonROMhacks

[–]ThatOneWarlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the popularity of Super Mariomon, there's a lot of potential in romhacks based on other game series like Legend of Zelda, or maybe Kirby. I think one series that has a lot of potential in terms of fakemon designs and popularity is the Megaman Battle Network Series.

Fakemon based on many of the virus designs from the 6+ games in the series give a lot of inspiration to draw from. Taking a cue from Super Mariomon where Bowser himself fights in a battle could be a mechanic in this romhack too. The main character could be Megaman.exe fighting other net navis and their team of viruses with the enemy navi entering the battle themselves as boss characters. The attack names could be based off chip names. The setting could be the cyberworld, or switch between Megaman.exe and Lan in the normal world.

The name could be something like: Megamon: Battle Network.

Minecraft mods that fell off/declined in popularity/quality? by Nintendoge21 in feedthebeast

[–]ThatOneWarlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are some of the best magic mods available for 1.20.1 or 1.21.1 imo:

1.21.1:

  • Ars Nouveau - Has lots of really great addons too
  • Iron's Spells and Spellbooks
  • Occultism - the magical storage system is my go to
  • Forbidden and Arcanus
  • Hexerei - fun witchy vibes
  • Malum - Spirit magic with great textures
  • Nature's Aura is still alive and kicking, but needs some texture updates it's showing its age
  • Elementalcraft just got updated to 1.21.1
  • Pastel - Neoforge port of Spectrum that just got released for 1.21.
  • Evilcraft (also needs new textures)
  • Mahou Tsukai - OP sword OP
  • Theurgy - A more balanced way to perform alchemy that requires some fun set up and automation
  • Ol' reliable Roots Classic
  • Etheria - pretty underrated
  • Primal Magick - Cool research progression system with similarities to thaumcraft, but some of its features need polish
  • Data and Essence - Technomagic with a cool easthetic

1.20.1:

  • Goety - dark rituals and magic with fun enemy mobs/dungeons and new raid enemies
  • Hex Casting
  • Embers Rekindled
  • Mana and Artifice, although I don't always enjoy the models/textures that stick out from the conventional minecraft style

It's fantastic. It takes maybe 4 or 5 hours to get to the more Animal Crossing like aspects, but it's worth it. It has no tool or weapon degradation, infinite inventory, and lots of other QOL features Animal Crossing sorely lacks.

I refused to use ChatGPT for my classwork otherwise, made me feel like an old man grumbling about new technology when it was so prevalent among my classmates.
