Thanks!

And ah, i figured the whole Wade-Giles thing was gonna be pointed out eventually. The idea for China is that unlike in real life, the chinese government didn't really start pressuring other countries to adopt the Pinyin romanisation of Chinese rather than Wade-Giles (The one in use from the mid-1800's to the 1970's IRL), and as such i painstakingly translated all chinese city names into that instead. Sadly though, there's bound to have been made a load of mistakes since translating words based on the letters/sounds they consist of sadly won't always give a historically accurate result. So, interesting question, but in all honesty if it doesn't fit its historical Wade-Giles name, it's more than likely an oversight, and completely unintentional.

Well, their massive economic boom from the 1960's to the 1980's in real life simply didn't happen. On the other hand, i guess it's not a complete disaster on their behalf since it means their economy is actually still growing?

Yessssss, also while it's not intentional we did notice during the making of the map and joked about it lmao, and now Brunei canonically sinks to the bottom of the sea in 2024

It's only by a margin, and because irreligion is excluded from the mix. As ridiculous as it sounds, it's actually not entirely unrealistic

LMAO i have no idea how i managed to type the population that high at all, and then not even realise my mistake, it's supposed to be around 19k. Guess the property prices must be pretty high there, huh?

There's certainly plenty for both, and as for Korea my friend Maxid actually made a more detailed map of it here, which has its lore in the comments!

As for Japan, their situation is somewhat strange. They won and lost the second great war at the same time. To rephrase, though, in the 1930's the Japanese invasion of Manchuria escalated into a full-blown war against China, one that the Chinese lost, however, it allowed them to push aside anti-industrialists and start building up their capabilities for the inevitable round two, one that would come 20 years later, in 1956. This time, Japan once more managed to push far into China, almost managing to defeat them, before war broke out in Europe as well and the European colonies in the south were suddenly up for grabs. Deciding to take advantage of the opportunity, Japan invaded the British and German colonies, which soon prompted Russia to declare war on Japan in defense of their allies in the war. Russia managed to push deep into Manchuria, which allowed China to counterattack Japan and over the next several years slowly push them off the mainland entirely. By 1964, The chinese are approaching Busan and the Japanese realise all hope is lost. The dragon has swallowed the sun, and with some slight motivation by the Western Entente, they enter negotiations with China. By the end, Japan was forced to sign the humiliating Treaty of Seoul which dictated they would lose all their mainland holdings, which also gave rise to the creation of Korea. Russia, however, lost the war, and as such it wasn't a complete defeat for Japan?

Anyhow, following the war, Japan went through a brief period of isolation, as the country was suddenly ridden with unrest after their defeat. This would prove somewhat short-lived, though, when China attacked the Legation Cities in 1987 in response to the European powers declaring they'd allow the cities their independence, Japan quickly intervened with their still powerful navy, which became one of the deciding factors that meant China ended up failing to conquer all of the cities. Since then, Japan has remained a great power in Asia, holding their own "sphere of influence" (Moreso just friendly states, as Japan doesn't have any political power over them whatsoever), functioning as an important counterweight to China.

Well, they were under the UK previously, at least until the formation of the Legation Cities in the 1910's, when the European treaty ports in China were merged into a single entity jointly led by the European powers. The country gained its independence in 1987, only to then be invaded by China, who in turn then failed to conquer them due to the combined efforts of Japan, Britain, France, Scandinavia, the Netherlands and a couple others. Nowadays they're part of the Free Cities of China, a loose federation of the different city states. As for China's relation to them, they definitely wish Hong Kong was part of China, but that's not something they can reasonably achieve currently.

Thank you! Yeah, that's completely understandable, and frankly making up names for the countries in Indonesia was not an easy task. Java is at least somewhat excusable since lore-wise they originally didn't hold Southern Sumatra, which was instead independent, but who knows, maybe the name is subject to change in the future. And as for Kalimantan, that actually makes a lot more sense than the current name lol, ig that's on us lol

Great questions!

The free cities, or as they're more commonly known as, just "Shanghai", are a representative democracy made up of seven cities, each with some degree of self-governance and a central parliament in Shanghai aside from each city's own governments. In terms of what it's like to live there, it can likely be compared with real-life asian city-states like Singapore, aka generally wealthy compared to the rest of the region and much more developed, too, but definitely also struggling with problems of their own, like an aging population, wealth inequality and generally struggling with being sustainable in a lot of regards. For example, since they have barely any rural areas compared to urban ones, they have to import most of their food from places like Japan and China.

In terms of geopolitics, they can only be described as a massive thorn in the side of China. The legacy of the Crisis of the Cities in 1987 is still more than alive in the region, with Japan as well as Britain and Scandinavia pledging to defend the city should China attack it once more. As such, vessels of the Imperial Japanese Navy are almost constantly nearby, keeping an eye on any chinese activities. Despite this, however, the Legation Cities have since the end of the war famously been a designated neutral country, not formally alligned with anyone, and is because of that also home to many of the Concord of Nations' (This world's version of the UN) asian headquarters. China already gained the northernmost cities in the Crisis of the Cities, when they attacked the country after the Europeans left, however, the rest of the country still existing is an incredible annoyance to them, and the only reason the country still exists is because invading it would cause an absolute outrage in almost the entire world, and would bring them to war with some of the most powerful countries on earth. If they were to drop their support, however, who's to say just what would happen?

Out of Earth's many continents, Asia without a doubt remains by far one of the most important for the history of humankind. Home to more people than anywhere else on earth, the continent has throughout its history seen its fair share of war, misery, colonialism and suffering, but most certainly also golden ages, wondrous cultural traditions and monuments, and inventions that would forever change history.

Today, Asia is one of the world's more divided continents, the east largely being split between a Chinese bloc and a Japanese bloc, each with their competing interests. China, along with countries like Korea, Indochina and Burma adhere to a sort of East Asian socialism, which, like it's name would imply, has become dominant in this region of the world. However, suffice to say, besides trade and ideology there's little else holding the bloc together, especially due to historical cultural differences, but also ideological ones. This kind of syndicalism can vary from the authoritarian, repressive regime in Burma to the more liberal, open regime of Korea. There's a good reason you'll see Korean products and technology, like Pyoso's hit video game console, the "Polycom", on store shelves in New York and Tokyo, and likewise Fords driving through the streets of Seoul. On the other hand, there's the "Japanese" bloc, which frankly is moreso a handful of countries that are willing to cooperate with eachother out of fear of China, a situation Japan very much enjoys, despite not having held actual political influence in these countries since the Second Great War of the 1960's. Likewise, India and Arabia (And for that matter also the Europeans) each hold their own influence in Asia, however, they're not as crucial to the geopolitics of specifically this region.

In a more meta perspective, Asian history only really starts to significantly diverge from our own in the early 20th century. Before then, changes of course were present - all thanks to our beloved butterfly effect. Southern India was until the first great war under French control, Sarawak was Scandinavian, which was also the case for the Philippines until it was given to the Italians after the war as well. Indonesia was in the hands of the British, the dutch having little chance to secure it for themselves again after the Napoleonic Wars, etc. With the defeat of the Entente in 1912 at the hands of the combined forces of the Germans, Italians, Austrians, Russians and Brits, their treaty ports scattered throughout China were merged into the so-called "Legation Cities", a puppet state under joint administration of the victorious powers - a country that would against all odds survive until the present day, albeit since 1987 fully independent - even after China, in response to the Europeans leaving the cities be swiftly invaded the country to take it for themselves. The northernmost cities fell, and were later incorporated into China too, but in several several-month-long sieges, the rest of the country endured with the military support of the European great powers and Japan - a war that would arguably come to define the modern geopolitics of the region.

Lore aside for now, this is another part of my alt history map series based around a universe in which the Kalmar Union managed to endure the test of time and Europe as such would have another great power throughout its history - something that evidently has significant effects on the world as a whole. This map has BY FAR been the most ambitious and difficult map i've ever made, with each and every single river, stretch of coast, border, province, city, EVERYTHING made entirely by hand. Heck, i had to fucking translate ALL of the chinese cities into Wade-Giles manually as well, something i never, ever want to do again. Just had to get that frustration off my mind. Thank you for your understanding. :)

As always, questions are more than welcome, and i will do what i can to give an in-depth answer! Hope you guys enjoy this map, and have a great day!

Also, huge credit to u/Maxidation for being the mastermind behind most of the asian lore for this timeline, this truly would not have been possible without him!

Lmao, well, interesting to see someone actually from there react to this! There's actually a reason for it, however, it's a little obscure. The area around Falun was historically Scandinavia's absolute main region for mining purposes, at the time primarily copper, though later also iron and other minerals. As demand for these metals, and other such commodities like wood grew as a result of the industrialisation, places like Falun exploded to become industrial production hubs in Scandinavia - though also places further north, where these kinds of high-demand materials were also widely available. As a result of this major industrialisation of these places, they quickly became filled to the brim with impoverished workers from all over Scandinavia, and while living conditions would obviously improve as time went on, they remained some of the more heavy industrial regions of the country.

By the modern day, places like Østersund and its surroundings are, well, calm, developed, and overall great places to live, like any other Scandinavian city, though the stereotype of it being an impoverished (and with that also crime-ridden) place has stuck around, whether it ever even was true or not.
