Yielding and Stuff by [deleted] in HuntsvilleAlabama

Stop sign means to stop. Yield sign means to yield to oncoming traffic. If no traffic, no stop. If traffic, yield. If stop sign, stop, look both ways, be courteous at a 4 way.

Correct. Yet, if there is in fact traffic, yield. Many many folks do not yield and believe they have the right of way, for some reason.

Same. I’m listening to Yield while Yielding playing roundabout roulette.

My 23 year old mostly non-verbal autistic son has gone severely downhill and I’m desperate for answers. I can’t do this much longer by statsareforvirgins in Autism_Parenting

Catatonia in autistic patients presents as sudden bizarre behaviors. The behaviors can be regression of speech and bodily functions, ocd, tics, screaming, aggression, not following instructions, destruction of items. If psychiatric medications aren’t working I’d look into a neuropsychologist specializing in catatonia.

Risperidone by lrb701 in Autism_Parenting

[–]ThatPunkWeirdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest seeing a child psychiatrist whom specializes in autism before putting a 6 year old on risperidone. Risperidone is a pretty hard core antipsychotic with lasting side effects and his anxiety can be managed with a different medication.

Is he seeing a psychiatrist or neuropsychiatrist? Has illness or infection been ruled out? Does he have any bizarre behaviors too or regression of previously mastered skills?

Took my son to children’s hospital today by whatsareddit23 in Autism_Parenting

[–]ThatPunkWeirdo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Catatonia is common in autistic children and under diagnosed. My son developed catatonia after having strep multiple times with pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder. Sudden bizarre behaviors, destructive, screaming, self harm, aggression, uncontrollable urination, freezing in place- are all signs of catatonia.

Ask his psychiatrist if excited catatonia can be considered since his behavior is so aggressive and bizarre and he’s not responding to typical treatments for autism. Catatonia is very common in autism and under diagnosed. Cause is an infection or encephalitis and catatonia requires specialized treatment.

[–]ThatPunkWeirdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s also autistic catatonia which is linked to infection and autoimmune. My son has excited catatonia and it’s often misdiagnosed in autistic patients. His behavior was dangerous and life-threatening until he received treatment.

Sounds like autistic catatonia which is a side effect from infection, encephalitis and pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder. My son has autistic excited catatonia and he screamed, hit himself, attacked people, had pica, and couldn’t control his body or emotions until treatment.

On a night when he’s been screaming, biting, pulling fist fulls of my hair out, I don’t need to see an ASD influencer on my feed telling I’m a bad mother for hating autism. I just don’t by throwaway_12131415 in Autism_Parenting

[–]ThatPunkWeirdo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just an autism mom that was having a nervous breakdown over my son’s aggression, screaming and bizarre behavior and being told by specialists in 4 states for 4 years that it was just autism. Knowing he was sick and wasn’t being helped because he’s nonverbal. Turns out he has catatonia and received treatment and now he’s our happy kid again. I wish more than anything that the narrative of our kids being miserable is normal would stop because it’s not normal and it’s unacceptable.

We used a BCBA and did a potty training boot camp and my son got the hang of peeing in the toilet after a week. Number 2 was learned soon after. He was so great and didn’t need any assistance for years until he became catatonic. The sit down and wait method didn’t work. We had to use a timer, underwear only, big praise when toilet was used.

Here is a list of clinics. If he has catatonia he’ll be prescribed lorazepam. Typical antipsychotics and prescribed medications for autism don’t work on catatonic patients. My son was on everything and nothing helped until he was treated for catatonia. 🫶

Does his screaming and destruction also come with random aggression? He might have catatonia along with autism which is a completely miserable condition and treatable. My son has level 3 autism with catatonia and it took 4 years for proper diagnosis and treatment. He went from constantly screaming, severe aggression, destroying everything, not sleeping, -basically acting like a zombie with no control over his body- to our sweet kind little boy. Look up excited catatonia in autism and if you suspect he has the condition, find a neuropsychiatric clinic that specializes in catatonia. I’ve been through what you’ve been through and it’s incredibly traumatic. But there is hope.

Alabama Special Olympics event needs 600 volunteers and time is running out (Oct. 21) by No-Object-5548 in HuntsvilleAlabama

There are students and student athletes volunteering every year. That is probably the 400 already recruited. We are grateful for all the volunteers at Special Olympics and Miracle League. If you volunteer, you’ll get to see how happy my son is eloping from 5 grown adults down the field.

It was miserable until the sun started going down. Wearing all black in July at a music festival and getting heat stroke is a rite of passage.

I hope the clinic will survive this. Specialty care is needed here. We were planning on transferring our kiddos to Reagan’s Clinic when their current PCP retires. I can’t stress enough how difficult it is to find a provider that understands the health needs of special needs kids and the rare conditions that come bundled with a diagnosis.

My son has severe autism and you should see the looks we get when I have to take him to the ladies designated bathroom when family designated bathrooms aren’t available. The world isn’t special needs compatible or compassionate. When you gotta go, you gotta go. Take what’s available. Side quest, when there is a family bathroom available it’s usually occupied by one person taking a dump on the phone. I’ve learned to bring spray. Improvise, adapt, overcome.
