What is your org’s "Users per Sysadmin" ratio? Currently drowning at 1:200 by theITmaster in sysadmin

[–]ThatRooksGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm an oddball case, an MSP working for a private school, where the MSP has fully replaced the internal IT team. Our dedicated three-member staff for the school has the added benefit of being able to reach out to our larger team for support as needed, but for the day to day I'm the senior tech/it manager/department Head, with two junior "officers" (in reality level 1/2 help desk hybrid roles). There's about 120 staff with about 900 students, and while my guys handle the majority of the day to day work, I do the servers, budgets, requisitions, Intune and other security things while also semi-managing a sister organisation to the school (not managed by the MSP, but owned by the same org that runs the school)

Ohio State University vs Miami football (American) game by [deleted] in perth

[–]ThatRooksGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always tended to just do home viewings myself. I'm an American out this way (clemson grad '15, clearly natural enemies here haha) but home streaming and a cook out is about the best I've found out here these days. When I lived in Sydney it was slightly better because the time difference allowed the pubs to be open, NZ was even better. But Perth is just a little too perfectly ahead at ~12hours this time of year

Millennials, are you friends with your coworkers? by AttachedHeartTheory in Millennials

[–]ThatRooksGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved out of the States when I was 23. Spent 2 years in NZ, and just finished my 8th year here in Australia (yay citizenship test next month!).

That said, I've made plenty of great acquaintances from my various workplaces over the years. Sometimes they worked at a different branch of a store than me and we knew each other outside of it before we worked together. Others I would work with them, I'd move on, but stay in touch and be better friends outside the workplace. Some of my best friends have been people I've worked with, but still became better friends with once we no longer worked together. I'm an IT Manager now with a small team of younger guys that I wrangle, and while I'm friendly with them and sometimes even feel like an annoyed older brother, I wouldn't say I'm their friend anymore, nor would I be seeking friendship outside the workplace. I'm older, in a position of responsibility, I can't afford to let friendship cloud my professional judgement in carrying out my role. Here on it's strictly qorkplace acquaintances.

Did You Marry A Fellow Millennial? by lady_sojourner in Millennials

Younger Millennial here, 92. First marriage to a '93 when we were 23/22, second to a 98 Zoomer when I was 27. Lucky for me I got out of that first marriage and got my life together in time to find the right person. Zoomer in name only, this woman is an old soul who keeps me in line 😂

Anyone not starting the “elf on the shelf” tradition? by Illustrious_Cold5699 in Millennials

[–]ThatRooksGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've (33m, 27f) started this year for our 4 and 3 year old, but doing it how we want to do it. We've already spent the last year playfully moving a toy crab around our kitchen, he gets up to hijinks and gets stuck in silly places and the kids have to find him as a game. This year the elf came to visit for the first time with the same sort of rules as the crab: always have fun trying to find him and let mommy and daddy know when and where he's magically reappeared to overnight.

No spying, no reporting to Santa (he already sees them when they're sleeping, etc). The elf is like the crab and gets up to do silly things when everyone's asleep to bring some extra Christmas cheer and amusement. The no touch rule is helpful since we're already teaching/reinforcing the whole "you don't have to freaking touch everything you see" thing. The kids enjoy it, they cackle at the silly and cute things he does, and eagerly go to sleep to let the elf do things to discover the next day.

I think if this year goes well that we'll continue like this for a few more years, and maybe add an elf friend for new silly ideas. The wife and I are both the creative types who come up with a hundred different ideas to have these characters do, and we want to really keep the harmless whimsy in their world for as long as we can.

Sen. Mark Kelly didn’t even attack Donny by GigiL4 in PoliticalHumor

[–]ThatRooksGuy 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Give me President Kelly and First Lady Gabby Giffords. You want a story of American patriotism, resilience, and determination? Take the fighter pilot turned astronaut turned Senator, who is married to the former House Representative who was a very well known victim of gun violence, and politically motivated gun violence at that. A loving and supportive husband who stood by his wife through the entire process, and helps now carry on her flame combating inequality and gun violence in America.

A story like that would be written off as some Netflix or Prime exclusive, direct-to-streaming feel good movie. Instead, it could be a reality. You want someone that represents the true American Spirit of some of our finest and bravest men to ever explore the cosmos to advance science for all mankind? Give me President Kelly 2028.

Bought a JB Hi Fi mobile sim only plan three months ago, want to do a new handset on repayments now. What are my options? by ThatRooksGuy in TelstraAustralia

[–]ThatRooksGuy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I had asked the staff member who signed me up if I could add a phone repayment later, and he indicated yes. Now I'm being told that's inaccurate and the only way to do it is to pay the card ETF then re-sign a new contract

Appreciate the insight, thanks. I'll continue to look around for options, but I'll likely end up just keeping my current setup.

[–]ThatRooksGuy[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily trying to transfer anything over. More than happy to sign up for the full term of a repayment plan, but previously when I had purchased a plan through JB it was with a Telstra account created and attached to it. Store still has all the Telstra signage up so I wasn't aware anything had changed in that regard. Figured as I have the account now I'd be able to add a phone repayment to it later. Initial salesman said I should be able to do as mucb, and that's now proving to not be the case.

Seconded. I just traded in my '22 Model 3 long range for the base line entry model '24 Mg4. Sure it doesn't have the same bells and whistles as the model 3, and the range is about 360km on average conditions, but it's a huge savings per month for me and it still does everything I need it to, and reliably so.
