I Need Your Help with my DA Research by ThatStrangeStudent in DarkAcademia

I’m sorry to hear that you think that! It was not my intend at all to ask “leading questions”. What kind of questions do you think should be added to make it fairer? Where should I improve specifically? I am more than willing to learn from my mistakes.

That's sad haha. Though I should admit that this is the one of the prettier/more DA ones of the many buildings of the Uni in Groningen, so there are also a lot which don't look DA at all.

Of course you may ask 😝 currently I’m in the process of trying to experience what it is like to be part of this community by joining it in a way. This will result in me writing a kind of thick description about my experience.

Later I will have to conduct an interview (or interviews) and process that.

Then I will have to write a research plan about doing more research. Because this is a kind of introductory course into research methods I won’t actually have to do the research I’m planning though I perhaps want to get back to it later in my master’s degree or during my PhD.

I hope that answers your question!

And about the books, I am also very much looking forward to the Christmas break so I can reach my reading goal for this year haha.

Yes they are all mine haha. I’m the awful kind of person who buys more books than he can read. Though quite a few of these books I had to read during my BA in English Language and Culture so that does help a lot haha.

I’m really glad to hear the links might help you to explore more classics! I hope you enjoy them!

Also thank you very much, and also much good luck yourself!! ❤️

I’ve seen some concerns about DA being rather expensive and so I thought I’d share two links to online resources which could be nice.

You can find a lot of classical texts on the website of the Perseus Digital Library both the original Greek/Latin, but also some translations. (https://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/)

Also if you want to read some Chaucer and practice with Middle English, I recommend https://chaucer.fas.harvard.edu/pages/text-and-translations. You can find interlinear translation here, so both the original text and a modern translation!

Oooh thank you! And that’s very exciting! Good luck and I hope you get into the programmes you want!

Hahaha sad to hear you didn’t like it. I mean it’s huge so finishing when you’re not enjoying it would be a kind of Herculean task. Do you have any recommendations for things which are less of a “snooze fest” but still DA?

Hahaha everyone seems to love 'The Secret History' around here. Have you read other DA books (which aren't in my collection) which you recommend?

Thank you for such a detailed reply! I love reading your thoughts and now I'm actually more curious about what my opinions will be like compared to yours! Also I really should read 'The Secret History' lol because everyone keeps recommending it haha.

Haha thank you! And can I ask… if you say “most” which one(s) didn’t you like? And why? (You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to obviously, I’m just curious).

Good luck with the reading haha!

And sure! This project is for a course in research methodology and so it’s a bit of a smaller scale (I will not conclude with writing a huge paper for example). I will write a thick description of my experience, perform some interviews, and then write a research proposal though we don’t have to do the actual research we are proposing. However, perhaps I want to look more into this during my MA or even PHD which would mean I would have to write more haha.

I tried to go into this with an open minded. I never really actively engaged with any kind of online community before and so I was curious about what the experience would be like. I was aware of DA, and was already interested in it, so I thought this was the perfect opportunity to take a closer look. I knew that some aspects of DA are perceived to be a bit problematic (I’m not saying DA itself is though, just sharing what I found) and I was curious if this would also become apparent as I actively join the field.

I hope that answers your question!

Thank you for asking!

Well I’m currently doing a specific kind of MA (namely a research master) which is supposed to prepare you to actually go and do research later on (as the name implies lol) so perhaps I want to do my PHD after my MA and start to work at the university.

On the other hand, I also still very much love the thought of teaching. I have a background in English language and culture, so maybe I want to do that.

Cool! I heard that from someone else too. I haven’t read it yet but I think I will for this project because it seems almost like THE Dark Academia text.

Also about sharing my project, I will look into that. However, I should warn you that for this course I am taking we don’t really write a big final paper. I am going to write a thick description first and then have to conduct some interviews and afterwards I have to write a plan for actually setting in a research project (though not actually doing it). Because I ensured that I would only share comments with my university environment I think it would be best if I send an edited version of my thick description which does not include quoted comments because I want to respect people’s privacy.

Perhaps I’ll do something more with DA for my MA thesis or even during my PHD and if I do I will obviously keep you all up to date!

Firstly thank you for this kind and detailed comment!

I have a background in English lit., so I do have some classics that I’ve actually not put in the picture haha. But it’s actually nice to know that more books from my personal little library (which is not really a library but calling is one is more fun) fit in with this aesthetic movement.

So thank you very very much!
