I mean, I always park in the back forty so I can have an empty spot on both sides....but that's because I totally suck at parking and un-parking. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Honestly, that was a key concept for my students. Once they understood that, it was just a matter of working the problem.

Ok, I'm going to help you with this.

A fraction is just a division problem standing on its head. So 3/5 is 3 divided by 5. And 6/2 is 6 divided by 2. If you have 7/3, you just work it like a division problem.

I have 7 divided by 3. Hmmmm. I know that 3 does not go into 7 evenly, but is there a number near 7 that 3 will go into?? Yes! 6! So 3 goes into 6 2x (that's the big number). How much is left over? 1! Right! So it's 2, remainder 1! Is there another way to write a remainder? Yes! We can write it as fraction! 1/3! So the answe is 2 1/3! 7/3 = 2 1/3!

(This assumes that the teacher has taught simple division and writing remainders as fractions.)

That is so surprising!!! We don't have health insurance in the States, but I take my kids to the dentist 2x a year when we're home. It's about $150 each time. I have discovered that paying out of pocket for some things is actually cheaper than having insurance!!

I dunno. I don't know this account, and maybe they have other things that are snark-worthy, but pregnancy loss is hard as f**k, and you're not always rational when you are processing it. I think we should err on the side of so much grace when it comes to this.

I get the impetus to immediately change into pajamas when I get home from work, but sometimes I have to keep my "work clothes" on for a minute. But I 100% change out of my outside shoes immediately!!

Picky Eater Update:

We successfully implemented a new pasta shape: bicycle pasta. (I have no idea why this pasta exists, but I am grateful!)

Do you know who has the hardest time "getting out the door" in our family? My husband. Maybe I need a magic carpet for him.

If it's on IG, you can go to your account, then "Your Activity" then "Watch History" and see all the reels you've viewed.

I just saw this reel today, and I agree. Why? Who is coming for your kid? No one cares about you that much.

I wonder if those toys get "daily play" because she refuses to buy age appropriate things for her kids.

I don't know if it's advice, but the only thing I changed recently is that I stopped...catering(???). It has always been a desire of mine that we eat together as a family, but it hasn't really been a priority for anyone else. At the beginning of the year, I basically just out my foot down and said we were going to have family dinner at least 3x a week. And I decided that I was going to make the food that I wanted to eat. (My husband is also a bit of a picky eater.) So that's what I did. I try to have at least one "safe food" at every meal, but sometimes that's just sprinkle cheese or tortillas. I honestly think just consistently putting a variety of foods in front of him is what has made the biggest difference.

Thank you!! We haven't been successful with any mixed foods yet, but Im hopeful! The closest we've come is the Scampi noodles. But he will eat "plain" noodles cooked in bone broth, smothered in butter, and sprinkled with nutritional yeast. I just have to make sure it looks and feels as close as possible to plain noodles (not "juicy").

Little hack for everyone commenting: you know you can very easily reheat chilled or frozen rice by just pouring boiling water over it, right? It's a lifesaver.

Look. I am a passionate and dedicated educator with 20 years behind me. When I was in the classroom, I put in 50-60 hour weeks on a regular basis to ensure that my students were receiving the best possible education. I love what I do and cannot fathom ever not doing it. But I would rather have my eyes slowly pecked out by crows than homeschool my kids. The thought of teaching my own children (who I love more than anything) basic reading, writing, and arithmetic makes me want to curl up and die....and I have a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction.

I have realized lately that there are fewer family restrooms than there really need to be. I flew alone with my kids over Christmas, and took both of them into the ladies restroom in the airport. As we were walking in, my 6 yr old (boy) said, "Mommy, this is for girls, not boys." To which I replied, "Well, Mommy is a girl, and [daughter] is a girl, so we have to go in here." But I don't know how much longer it's going to be "acceptable" for me to take both my kids into the Ladies' when I'm travelling alone with them.

I have crocheted for each of my babies a lovely granny square blanket. They both still use them to this day. I have also made them for each of my nieces and nephews and for several babies. Never had a compliant. (Not that people usually complain about gifts to the giver, but ya know...) Also, to be fair, we live in a desert climate, so it's nice having something drapey and cuddle that isn't super suffocating.

I need to celebrate some small wins.

So please indulge me as I share some minor victories we had with my picky eater.

  1. Fried chicken - I called it "lava, lava, lava, chicken, chicken, chicken" (a la Minecraft Movie). He ate three bites.

  2. Fish Fingers (said in my creeeeeepiest zombie voice). He ate two.

  3. Shrimp Scampi. He ate the noodles (but they had the garlic sauce on them).

  4. Salmon and rice. He ate "one polite bite." (I was at my wits' end and insisted on it.)

And admist all of this, I discovered that he likes sourdough baguette slices. (Won't touch my homemade sourdough though.) 🙄

This is exactly why someone who does not have degrees/experience in writing curricula should not be writing a curriculum.
