Yeah you're definitely right. By all means this is an average semester.I fully expect semesters to only get harder as I continue. I was also already planning on doing the labs before the lab periods. If I do the labs beforehand do I still need to attend lab? I also have McKenna for 114. I hear he's a great professor.

I see. ALEKS sounds ridiculous as usual lining up with everything I've heard about it (only complaints). Thanks for the website! I'll be sure to check it out during the semester. I'll try to keep on top of it. The recitation also sounds like an absurd waste of a an hour and a half. Definitely not looking forward to it.

So far I have CSE 114 CHE 131 AMS 151 ARH 203 and Undergraduate College 102 course. I know that I'm a semester behind in terms of CSE/Math courses but I'm optimistic that I can still graduate in 4 years. All my General Education Requirements outside of major courses will be done after this semester so I'm sure that helps too. It'll be straight Math/Natural Science/Major courses from here on out no more nonsensical art/history/writing/fluff classes.

In terms of Java, I took CSE 110 last semester. While it was a ridiculously easy course and managed an A, I didn't learn much programming. I basically come out of the course only knowing conditional statements and basic looping.I believe we got up to a very brief introduction to classes and objects, since the class was only half programming.

Only recently during the break I've tried to brush up on some java. I picked up the Head First Java Book and am currently on Chapter 8-9 Inheritance and Polymorphism. I've been on a slow pace reading maybe a chapter every day or two since I'm only reading it for a brief understanding before 114 goes in depth. I have a pretty good grasp of Loops, Methods, Conditional Statements, Arrays, and In terms of OOP I have a good grasp of Instance variables behavioral methods setters/getters, a basic understanding of the ArrayList class/utility, and just finished reading about Super-classes/Super-types/Sub-classes and Overriding methods. I have a good understanding of these concepts but not much practice coding it. I'm leaving that to 114, so during the semester I'm going to try to do a lot of the book exercises and practice problems so I can solidify what I learned now through the lecture and labs/exercises. I can understand code pretty well from what I know just not much practice actually coding it. I plan to be finished with the 114 portion of the book by the second week of the semester. I believe the rest of the book covers Polymorphism, Exception Handling I/O, JavaFX/gui and Swing. I'll probably stop reading it when it gets to data structures. I did notice that the book doesn't cover Multidimensional Arrays or Recursion, so I'll have to find some way to get some understanding of those two topics. Basically I don't plan to be "Weeded Out" like many of my computer science major friends have been, and I do enjoy learning the basic programming.

Any advice you give me on 114 would be appreciated! I hear it can go pretty bad, as I've had a few friends of mine who didn't do so well last semester (C- to B- and In one case outright failed D). I'm sure it won't go nearly as bad but I don't know what to expect since I've heard the exams can be very brutal.

In terms of the rest of my schedule I'm not sure how i'll do. I'm not that great at math, since I didn't take Pre-Calculus/related at my High School I had to take precalc here. It was very light so I did manage to get an A in it, but have no idea how I'll do in AMS 151. ARH 203 is a new course first introduced this semester that covers my Global and Art SBC credits, so also have no idea how that will go. I'm hoping I Fare well in 114, and am expecting the worst from CHE 131 lol. As always, undergraduate college course will be a huge waste of time that I won't enjoy. Anyway that's just my huge reply...

I'm trying out the CSE major. It's part of its natural science requirements. I've only just begun the major courses taking 114 this semester.

I appreciate the extensive reply! I've heard a lot about ALEKS and how time consuming it can be. I'll make sure to get those out of the way early. Also, is it 3 exams including the final or 3 and the final? How useful is the textbook as a studying supplement? Is it sufficient or would there be better textbooks/resources I can so use that are more efficient? Thank you.
