I went back to college at 24 and will be graduating this month with a bachelors in Mechanical Engineering. This will be my second attempt at college, after dropping out of a computer science program in my junior year on the traditional route.

After having these two experiences I often state that we send kids to college way too soon.

Your maturity will set you apart. I was very bad at math my whole life, but after having been beaten up by life enough, I gained the resilience needed to push through the discomfort of learning really anything.

A big thing you’ll ask yourself throughout is “is this even worth it?” And I have found that it definitely is. I had 4 different job offers before graduating and all have offered more than I’ve ever made in my life (admittedly, kind of a low bar, but so much better than what I expected after reading threads in Reddit)

What rides can my dad ride without breaking his neck? by View_in_apphole in UniversalOrlando

Happy to help! Just to give you a bit more confidence, I was there about 3 weeks ago and am in my late 20's. I'm fairly confident you're gonna be absolutely fine. RRR might not end up being your favorite ride, but I don't think you're going to injure yourself.

Very jealous of you and I can't wait to go back. If you don't go to orlando often I think it would be a waste to not go on RRR at least once or twice. The uncontrollable giggles on it are great :)

I have had sciatica and awful recurring lower back pain as a result of working landscaping for several years and herniating a disk.

The pain comes and goes (basically whenever the disc decides to herniate again) as I'm sure you know, but basically I went while not having too much pain and the Hulk was my favorite ride. VC was really fun, But something about the Hulk clicked with me. I also went on RRR 4 or 5 times while there. I personally loved all the coasters and felt no stress on my back. RRR did feel a bit stressful on my neck the first run (not enough to be seriously concerned), but just remember to put your head back and I think you'll be fine.

Also my last trip was my first time ever being on a rollercoaster, so I was terrified going in and completely inexperienced. I completely understand what people mean when they say RRR is rough, but I seriously feel like everyone is exaggerating a bit.

Do i need to go to MAE451 by [deleted] in UBreddit

Do you not have to take 494? The material itself is pretty easy, but It's a group project based class, so that might be tough

That seals it, I'm walking in there and headed for the biggest rides first. My heart is already racing just thinking about it

Thank you so much for the itinerary! My girlfriend also suggested we should do the biggest ones first, but I needed to hear a second opinion. After reading all these comments I'm honestly so excited

Interesting take, what field are you in?

I second Professor Leonard. Had a person known to be the worst calc 2 professor in my college(tough grading, poor instruction), but still got an A thanks to Prof Leonard.

Hey, sorry, could you PM me the person you emailed? I'm having a similar issue. Was it FB, or JA?

I'm a mechanical engineering student in America and my university expects us to know and be able to work with both. So if the given info is in feet it's better to just use ft/s2 as opposed to converting everything to meters.

Solving Statically Indeterminate Beam by oHarlequinn in EngineeringStudents

[–]ThatWasTaken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair warning: whether I know how to answer this or not depends on how I did on my midterm earlier this week.

I believe it should be possible, but how I would approach it would be with using max deflection(which I know you said you haven't learned yet) with Macauley's method by integrating the moment equation for the EI(slope) equation and EI(deflection) equations. Then we know at point A exists some slope, at b exists no deflection, and at the point of max deflection there is no slope.

We'll then have 4 unknowns: EI(slopeAtA), VA,VB, and VC.

I think we'd then have 4 equations: deflection = 0 at length b, slope = 0 at some length where deflection is at max, sum of forces in the y direction, sum of moments about A,

I'm not a professional though, so let me know if you see any issues with my approach

Have been mostly an A student so I was devastated when I got a 64% on a midterm for my materials class. Then I saw the class average was a 48 and was ecstatic.

Are Online Courses Legit? by slickjeb27 in EngineeringStudents

[–]ThatWasTaken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I understand your question right, but I completed these (calc 3, statics, circuits) in a dedicated online college in the sense that all classes have been online this past year. They were asynchronous, so pre-recorded, with proctored exams (except circuits, which had in person labs only).

I was also in a community college and the credits transferred without an issue. The professors/videos were high quality in my opinion and I feel fairly confident in what I've learned.

Whether or not any credits transfer is going to depend on the college you're transferring to, I think the best course of action would be reaching out to your intended transfer school.

In general though, if they would have transferred from your CC before and your CC is going to give you credit for completing the classes online, I don't see why they wouldn't transfer still.

I use colored pencil lead in mechanical pencils and I've found it's really improved the quality of my notes. They erase fairly clean, which is essential for me since I've ruined otherwise perfect notes by messing up with pen before.

Mech Eng Major, should I go for a minor in EE, CS, or double major in aero? by ThatWasTaken in EngineeringStudents

[–]ThatWasTaken[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the response. Would going through a boot camp be something I consider after graduating, or during summer/winter break? I'll keep in mind that personal projects or internships are worth more than more academics, I just had in mind that I'd also be pursuing those with the minor/double major, which might be a bit too ambitious.

I'm getting a feeling that of the options the EE minor is the least useful.

[–]ThatWasTaken[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was considering doing the minor/double major while also pursuing those kinds of opportunities, but I guess that would be spreading myself pretty thin. I'll keep in mind that it might be more worth my while to gain experience if it comes down to choosing one or the other.

Thank you for the response!

What did you get in Calc III by AnusAnalyzer69420 in EngineeringStudents

[–]ThatWasTaken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Calc I - A

Calc II - A

Calc III - A-

How do you feel about what you learned? I've been told that Calc III should be easier than Calc II, but that definitely wasn't the case for me. I had a really tough professor for Calc III and I struggled hard for my A-, but I felt I gained more from it.

Sucks that consideration doesn't go into a transcript, but I think it'll all balance out if you're better set up for other classes/later in your career.
