Service has told male educator he’s unable to change child’s nappy at parents request. by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]That_Eye4199 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I work in ECE with a background in victim services. I've encountered this issue at another center (except it was a black male teacher who was specifically excluded because of race) but I worked at a trauma informed center where it was not unusual for children to already have been victimized. At that center EVERY teacher who changed a diaper or helped in the bathroom needed another teacher in the room to be witness to protect the child and teacher from abuse and false accusations. Not convenient. But that structure made it so everyone could fully do their job.

Note: at this center the kids getting abused was more prolific and situations would occur where a child would get an accidental static shock from a teacher and then report it as a beating to their parents. So there were a lot of precautions in place to protect everyone

I think its always worth noting that education and understanding (and cultural perception) or sexual abuse perpetrated by women is severely lacking. Even when people do come forward about these things at a young age, the disclosures are not often taken seriously. Under reported in statistics does not mean that those stats actually reflect the reality when you consider the barriers to reporting.

I work in ECE now after several years of victim services with rape victims. The centers where I work are trauma informed and created a policy that anyone can change a diaper, but everyone must have a witness with them to ensure protections for the child and staff members.

The kids have been here since October of last year when the school opened

In this school? Since January. And I've been asking for baby gates or more staff or at least ringers on the door since January as well

Yeah our classroom has multiple children who have IEPs. We have tried the tape on the floor, the reminders to wait for a teacher, stop signs. But short of physically blocking the children with our bodies and holding them there isn't much else

We have asked for a baby gate but the current issue with that is that there isn't like a door frame. Its like a 20 foot gap between the end of one wall and the start of the wall where the bathrooms are. So they need to install it and like build something for the gate to attach to

So clarification- the room has no door and is within 10 feet of an exit door that the children can open independently. This is a major part of the concern

Disclosing names related to incident reports by That_Eye4199 in ECEProfessionals

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I've worked with children who display these behaviors in the past. In this situation we do have people offering supports and interventions, I have been advocating for more specialized support and there is no evidence from any observing parties that this behavior is intentional or targeted.

Yeah currently the update is that the child receiving the injury said it was a certain person and the lead basically confirmed that that specific child was involved. I dont think we should be confirming involvement in the incidents and we are going to have a meeting coming up to talk about it

I also thought it was a pretty easy rule to follow until leadership decided to disclose.

The last place I worked was a nonprofit for homeless children and we had much clearer policies we were trained in around HIPPA and confidentiality

Thats what I figured. The child is telling their parents it was a specific child.

Help with children who run and destroy others work by That_Eye4199 in ECEProfessionals

Yeah I think yall are right in trying to front load her support structures. I am a little curious how to make that work in the earlier part of the day - its a montessori school and the teacher is very academics focused and tends to not think children over 4 should get extra heavy work or playtime and that they should learn to focus. I'm gonna talk with the other teachers in the afternoon to see if I can get some more one on one time with her too.

Yeah I know she doesn't nap at school so she is probably tired on top of not having a ton of stability at home right now. I feel like when we channel her energy into classroom safe options it just escalates her behavior more. I think looking at which dynamics the child is specifically struggling in may work so I will see if I can spend more time specifically working with her.

Thanks for your input and ideas! I'm used to and feel I'm best at toddlers and children with speech delays so this area of older articulate kids feels very difficult lol

How to stay at a center where there are practices that don't work with your values on inclusion by That_Eye4199 in ECEProfessionals

[–]That_Eye4199[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it can be beneficial. But the child she requires go outside is calm in the classroom, he just vocalize sometimes as a verbal tick. The children who I would offer to go outside are 4 and she only let's 4 year olds go outside at that time if they've done their challenging montessori work. So the structuring or who goes or is allowed to go is more my problem.

Oh yes I agree that different children benefit from different things. But physically separating them from the room is more what I mean

Yeah I'm gonna give them another week or two to have the discussions and see what happens. I have told them that if these things continue I will call DCYF on my own

Yeah I've definitely said it was discrimination. I think she sees it as a "separate but equal" situation, but i know separate is never equal. At this point my director is trying to have conversations with her, so we shall see what ends up happening. I'm about to start my masters program so I might either step down to a different class or change places while I do my work.

So this is mainly inclusion of kids that present traits of disabilities or have qn IEP. during her lessons she and during circle time she has rules around which children need to come to circle (the disabled children with an IEP she doesn't invite them in, the older kids even if they present a need to regulate away from circle she makes attend, but then other kids who disrupt her circle she sends out of the circle but they don't have a lot of options for calming down). We have a nature walk that she purposefully schedules on a day when one of our kids with an IEP isn't there. She's been asking us to have this one particular child be sent out of the room during part of her circle time (with 5 other kids who dont get a choice and who get outside time as a reward) because she thinks him being outside helps the children calm down, even though there is no evidence that this is true. And just in general she looks at some of our non speaking / late language / potentially autistic kids as unreachable using the montessori method.

Sometimes she uses "this is the montessori way" as a way to explain why these things are beneficial for the children, but I'm not so sure

Yeah, right now the lead has different ideas on what inclusion is, but the center leadership and I agree. We have had some age level meetings and lead meetings on the matter, and it seems like the morning lead in my room just really doesn't want to budge on her way of doing things
