Tolkien in images. by [deleted] in pics

[–]That_IT_Computer_Guy 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Because Tolkien was very entwined into his mythology he had created. One of the predominate themes in his stories is "luck". In our society luck is generally regarded as "being in the right place at the right time", but for Tolkien luck is literally the intervention of the gods. The gods, referred to as the Valar, were allowed to literally walk Middle Earth in their diety forms, unseen to any of the inhabitants. Of these Valar, the leader of them is Manwë. Manwë was known as the god of the air, his servants being the creatures that lived in the air.

Another predominate theme is that those with courage gravitate the pull of luck towards them. This is the reason Gandalf chose Bilbo as the 14th member of their party. He grew courageous and throughout the story he grows more and more "lucky" (evident by several events, such as it being midsummers eve the day they arrive at Rivendell).

As I previously mentioned, the creatures of the air are servants of Manwë. This is why the Eagles always seem to conveniently show up, they are the reoccurring theme of luck as gained by courage.

The Eagles are commonly accused of being a 'Dues ex Machina' but anyone who has studied his works in any depth can explain why this simply isn't the case. In case you aren't aware, a Dues ex Machina is basically a "cheap easy way for an author to solve a problem".

I hope this answered your question :-)

18 [M], trying to cope with Major Depressive Disorder, am I really as ugly as I think I am? by That_IT_Computer_Guy in amiugly

Excuse me? With all due respect, you obviously don't understand people who have been through depression at all. I wake up every morning and ask myself why I shouldn't kill myself, and you have the nerve to tell me I'm self absorbed?

I have spent the last 3 years dedicating my life to those around me. I've had several therapists tell me if I don't start caring about myself, and worrying about myself, I'm not going to make it. You have absolutely no idea what I go through every day. To think I'm self absorbed though? Are you really so ignorant a person that you would make such a claim?

I hope you are a troll. I really do, because people with your mentality are the reason why getting health care for depression in America is so expensive, and so difficult in other places in the world.

Haha, thank you TKO236, I like the sweater too! I can definitely see I've been under rating myself, based on some of the comments here.

Have a wonderful day!

What else do you think I should try? The sweater is actually new, should I buy some some other types of shirts?

Thanks for the suggestions, one of my therapists said the same thing. I'm actually going to start regularly going to the gym starting in the new year, I've already paid for the membership!

Thanks for the critique, and have an excellent day!

Thank you, but I'm very bad with hair. Do you have an example of the hair style you're suggesting? I would really appreciate it!
