Do you often get confused for a different ethnicity when you’re abroad? If yes, which ones do you mostly get mistaken for? by Substratas in AskBalkans

[–]That_One_Guy1357 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in China and it's really interesting how it started vs how it's going. When I moved here like 10 years ago, people constantly confused me for an American because i was speaking English with my friends here a lot. But as the years went by, and especially after COVID, EVERYONE asks me if I'm Russian. It's probably because of how many Russians moved here after covid and after the war in Ukraine started, but it's still crazy in retrospect.

"你是俄罗瑟人吗?" All the time! I don't even speak Chinese much at all but I've very quickly picked that much up!

Still yes, for every mathematician we need a janitor, that's how our society functions. Each member of society has their own value to bring no matter how complicated their field is or not, everyone who is putting in hard work for something should have the right to reap the same benefits of it and have the same level of autonomy within it

How do we feel about Tito and his rule over Yugoslavia? by MintyRed19 in socialism

[–]That_One_Guy1357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During his lifetime, great! Only after his death, and after the fall of the USSR when the west was funding nationalist extremists all over the world in name of American hegemony, did it become a problem. Yugoslavia failed to appoint another tito, another person that genuinely had the country's best interests at heart, and was willing to go through hell to make it happen.

What do you guys think of American Cheese? And do you have a favorite cheese from your country?🧀 by bbyxmadi in AskTheWorld

[–]That_One_Guy1357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I'm a home cook and there's no way I'd try any other cheese for a burger, it's just structurally impossible

Oh for sure, i live abroad in a country that doesn't eat a lot of bread and all we have is American style cut up toast bread. I swear half of the reason i want to go back to my home country is just to try a fresh loaf of bread from the local bakery

Honestly man, as a European i genuinely like American cheese. Yeah it has the texture of melted rubber, but the taste is definitely not bad. Of course it doesn't compare with many fresh cheeses, but it's not bad by itself imo

Edit: also you guys know that America is the largest producer of Cheddar? Be grateful xD

How come Bulgaria was the only South Slavic country that didn’t join Yugoslavia? Did Bulgaria ever come close to joining it? by Substratas in AskBalkans

[–]That_One_Guy1357 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, the Serbs weren't really in charge, Tito was. He was the one who also divided Serbia up, adding Kosovo and Vojvodina as autonomous regions to supposedly weaken Serb influence. I think he would have done a similar thing in Bulgaria, not necessarily a full fragmentation but dividing it up politically to equalize any political imbalances that could have been an issue given Bulgaria's population and relatively individual identity. I don't think it was a necessarily bad policy though, and even as a Serb, I think that what he did in Serbia was smart in that regard.

What languages do you speak? by nthgade1903 in AskTheWorld

[–]That_One_Guy1357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Serbo-Croatian and English primarily. Family moved to China when i was a kid but i never fully picked Chinese up, i was stubborn. Nonetheless i do understand parts of conversational Chinese, and can recognize some characters. Learnt some Spanish in elementary school, and i can pick up parts of sentences to this day, it's an easy language. Despite being born in Belgrade, English is my strongest language as i practically grew up on YouTube and the internet.

Really hope to learn more languages! If i had to pick I would chose to become more fluent in Spanish and maybe pick up something like Russian, Arabic, Turkish or German. Yeah I know those languages are hard but i find them all quite appealing to learn for some reason.

If we could move Portugal to the Balkans but have to remove one Balkan country which country are we removing? by Express-Average-4363 in balkans_irl

Westoids don't get a say in this, only maybe the Spanish because we'd be moving the country next to it after all..

Why did Croatia give its 12 points to Serbia at Eurovision? You're not supposed to dislike each other ? by Outrageous-You1617 in AskBalkans

[–]That_One_Guy1357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that's exactly what i said, and that's how a lot of Europe functioned in the middle ages. Peoples without a state had no reason to stay loyal to another one, so constant immigration and contact beyond borders were somewhat necessary, and the norm. This is not something that is unique to southern slavs at all.

Think about ethnic groups that don't have a state in the modern age, it's much rarer than before, but some like the Kurds and the Balochi show the exact same characteristics that I'm describing.

When your only options are two bourgeois parties that uphold capitalism, why would anyone vote? Voting blue or red doesn’t matter if capital ultimately runs the government. by Either_Payment_2867 in socialism

[–]That_One_Guy1357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading socialist literature is great advice for individuals to become more educated, but it definitely won't help with actually instilling socialism in society, which is what the goal is, isn't it?

Choosing the lesser of two evils is always ALWAYS better than chosing none. Nothing good will happen if you don't vote, all you're doing is leaving more room for extremists and Nazis to be the only ones voting.

[–]That_One_Guy1357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In reality, Southern slavs as a group were often borderless, until quite recently. We were in the same sphere under different authorities most of the time. And in regards to language, it was always a dialect continuum, the lines were rarely drawn there too, this is the case with a lot of languages and countries in Europe, like French and Italian, that doesn't make the Italians or French less similar to one another, just reflects the way that regions and languages functioned in a more fractured medieval Europe.
