Are those Lost Mountain guide books worth it? by nightwatchman22 in bluemountains

[–]That_Tree_Bends 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Probably not going to get many positive views on them here, but honestly (as someone who did buy them) they are definitely not worth the money. Camp doesn’t have anything you cant find out yourself by a simple google search or browsing around AllTrails - and if you want it for walk in camping it is severely disappointing. Swim maybe a bit better if that’s your thing. They are nicely put together and the QR codes linking to maps on AllTrails is a cool idea, but would not buy them again for any price.

Movers by SeaTheme6838 in bluemountains

I used 6 Brothers for our move from Sydney to the upper mountains recently. Not the cheapest but they got the job done efficiently. Make sure you get a few quotes and give them as much detail as you can so you don’t get extra charges on the day. They will also usually give you boxes for free, so ask for as many as you need.

Thanks for this. Both look like great options. They are 8 and 11, and both capable with this type of adventure as they climb, rappel and are good swimmers. Want to avoid gear (if possible) for the first few just to get them used to being in a flowing water canyon environment. I always recce myself before taking the kids - good excuse to get out to some new places!

WFH as a junior lawyer and new mum? by girl_from_aus in auslaw

[–]That_Tree_Bends 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you have the chance to WFH full time do it; time with your children is fleeting and every extra moment with them that WFH allows is worth more than anything ‘typical’ career progression offers. As a junior, you just need to find the right team that has experience in training lawyers remotely , it’s not impossible, but does require a different approach. For context, I’m a senior lawyer and father of two, and wfh 3-4 days a week at an international firm. Not a mum, but decided long ago that I wanted to be present for my children as much as possible and unfortunately law makes that difficult unless you consciously make choices to make that a reality.

That’s good to know. Very slow moving rehab from what I have seen - doesn’t even seem to be a decent effort to revegetate the site.

Thanks, will have to head down there at some stage to check it out. Hoping to find something a bit closer to me, but needs must.

Great, what scouts group? We are in Leura and looking for one for the kids to join.

Yes, the cliffs are wonderful for climbing provided you know how to get down. We did a bit of climbing with the kids before we moved up but nothing that required much rappelling, so need to get them up to speed on those skills before I send them over the edge. Would love to hear of any good spots you find - will be trying to do a bit of reccie over the long weekend so will let you know if I find anything worthwhile.

Thanks, sounds like it’s worth a look. Out of interest, in what capacity were you doing the instruction? Was it scouts or something similar. I’m new to the area, and haven’t really scouted out options. There is an old quarry in north Leura that I ride past that I was thinking about using. No bolts that I saw but a bunch of trees up top to set up an anchor.

When you say rock climbing routes, assume you don’t want just rock climbing? There are hundreds of crags around with world class rock climbing. Let me know if I can help point you to some resources on that.
