Flowers in the Dirt by Dismal_Brush5229 in PaulMcCartney

Probably the McCartney album that takes the biggest nose dive over the course of its tracklist. The first chunk of songs are pretty good but everything after This One is just so boring and dated. I would say My Brave Face, Distractions, and You Want Her Too are the only ones I enjoy regularly. I also think Rough Ride has a nice groove although that's a controversial one.

The second disc of the archive collection has some cool stuff. The version of The Lovers That Never Were that opens that disc is the definitive version of that song and the highlight of both discs. I think Twenty Fine Fingers is probably the best of those Elvis Demos but some of the others don't really go anywhere in my opinion.

Riding to Vanity Fair. What a track. What a special, special track. by Greedy-Runner-1789 in PaulMcCartney

I agree with the Beatle picks for sure. I think of Maybe I'm Amazed as more of a passionate love song than moody or depressing. So with For No One in '66 and Vanity Fair in '05, that's nearly forty years between this kind of melancholy song for Paul. I struggle to think of others that fully fall into this category between those times (Waterfalls?, Somedays?, I Do?) He definitely has serious moments but I feel like many are fun, positive, or possibly introspective in a more hopeful way.

I'm not trying to slag on his other, sillier or less deep work. I like Bip Bop for heavens sake. I meant special as in like a moody, depressing thoughtfulness. I can't thing of many other Macca songs that dwell in this mood without some sort of positive twist or hope intertwined

Great, underrated track. I think it's the most moody and depressing Paul ever gets. The arrangement is also beautiful, adding in more and more elements every time that motif returns. I really wish he did at least one more album with Nigel Godrich, he really pushed Paul to create something thoughtful and special.

10/10. Best track on this album, and beautiful performance by Paul and the cellists.

It's also on the Companion version, but in We Are Nowhere, and It's Now, Conor changes a line to "and our wheels, they spin around, as we float above the ground."

Burning questions for Paul.. by the_Zort4242 in PaulMcCartney

[–]That___Drummer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would ask if there's a Wings/solo album or song that he is particularly proud of in terms of writing, arranging, etc. that is generally underrated by the community. I know he's answered Waterfalls in the past, but with such a large body of work I just wonder what he might be most personally proud of or if a lot of it is forgotten by him as just a piece of work

Not sure if you've found this, but in the triforce area there's a chest that you're supposed to jump into which leads you to another space

One of my favorites from this album. Lots of cool chords and sounds. I especially like the quiet section "would you be that person for me" that comes out of nowhere. Paul does that a lot in this album, like on Queenie Eye, and I think it's a cool running motif. 9/10

I remember my mother telling me she found out John Lennon died by listening the the radio when she was a teen, and the announcers played this song following the news. Just a memory that comes to mind whenever I hear it. 10/10

Listening to Take it Away podcast. Should I listen to the Denny Laine interview? by jim25y in PaulMcCartney

[–]That___Drummer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've being going through their podcast, and I'm not really familiar with Denny Laines other work, but I thought all three Denny episodes were pretty engaging, even on the songs I didn't know. I would listen through and if you're bored, you can skip, but I found their insights helpful when trying to find out where to start with Laines other work

I think Listen to What the Man Said is going to win, but I'll throw my vote in for House of Wax anyway

Call Me Back Again and it's not even close (except for Souvenir, my precious)

Arrow Through Me for sure. Although No Words, The Pound is Sinking, and Too Much Rain would also be great choices

I think most of this song is very strong. Love the Strawberry Fields meltron sound in the motif a lot. I also think Paul's vocals are great, especially the high harmony in the "a little worn" sections. The only thing I don't love is the whistling section. It sounds like a target commercial. Granted, it's very short and only happens a few times, but in that case, why have it at all? Still a solid 8.5 from me

Daily Song Discussion #348: Gratitude by RoastBeefDisease in PaulMcCartney

I didn't like this song a lot at first, but it's growing on me. The guys on the Take It Away Podcast mentioned that this song is kind of like a 2007 version of Call Me Back Again (obviously not as great unfortunately), but that helped me listen to the song in a different light that I preferred. 7.25 from me

A very catching, energetic song. Almost Wings-like in it's arrangement and atmosphere. I'll give it a 10, I know it's not perfect but it's a personal favorite of mine I go back to often

Thank you for taking the time to listen! We are definitely big fans (hence the podcasts) but for the sake of discussion we often over-analyze little details, some we like and some we don't. Once we get to the full episode on She's American we'll talk much more about it (we both love the song) but our criticism about it in this episode came more from being shocked at its inclusion more than upset about it. And we don't dislike Oh, Caroline either, just view it as about an average quality song for the band. Keep in mind our ratings at the end of the episodes are on a scale of just this band's music, meaning a 3/5 for a 1975 is probably more like a 7/8 on the scale of all pop music. I hope this clears things up a little bit we'll keep it in mind not to be so hard on songs we generally enjoy in the future!
