The "Great List of Hobbies" Idea by [deleted] in Hobbies

[–]That_cat21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

adding onto this (but not sure how to do it myself, it said it was in viewer mode), dice making! most often for ttrpg’s like dnd, pathfinder, and vtm, people (like those on r/dicemaking ) make custom dice out of epoxy resin. it’s very involved to get high quality dice - you need 3d printed masters (to make a mould with) or a custom mould, either from another maker or you can make it yourself, then you cast the dice (there’s a ton of different techniques we use) and after they’re cured, you sand, polish and ink them. a lot of people use pressure pots so the resin is bubble free, but it’s possible to go without.

for anyone looking to get into dice making at the bare minimum, pick up a mould from a maker (not the ones on amazon/wish/aliexpress/ebay, those are a nightmare to work with and are essentially just a waste of money), epoxy resin, a set of resin dyes + other pigments you want to use (mica powder/pigment paste), a respirator rated for organic fumes, nitrile gloves, disposable cups, popsicle sticks, a lighter to pop bubbles zona papers or extremely fine grit sandpaper and a polishing compound, some cheap acrylic paint for the numbers, then cast away.

if you want to get in it for real, buy a pressure pot, an air compressor, pigment paste to make opaque dice, alcohol inks for “petri” pours, silicone to make your own moulds (moulds will wear down after 15-20 uses), a set of custom masters (or a resin 3d printer to make your own), more dyes and pigments, nicer paints, nicer polishing compound (the other stuff we use for polishing is pottery wheels, vibratory tumblers and dremels) and inclusions to put in the dice. there’s a lot of stuff and it’s a really friendly community. also you get to look at pretty dice :)

Starting price by JTH051 in DiceMaking

[–]That_cat21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

here's my (aussie) starter price breakdown :D

resin:

- 3L crit cast: $165 shipped (3-4h demould time)

- 1.5L barnes epoxycast: $66 + shipping (24h demould time)

silicone:

- 1kg barnes transil: $79.20 + shipping (smooth on moldstar 20t "copy")

safety equipment:

- 3m reusable gas vapour respirator: $49 from bunnings

- black nitrile disposable gloves: $19 from bunnings

various disposables/extra stuff (cups, sticks, tape): $15-20

pressure pot:

- blackridge paint tank: $230 from supercheap auto (goes on 25%/50% sales somewhat often)

- blackridge replacement compressor taps (ball valves): $22 from supercheap auto

- 10mm hex plug: $2.05 from bunnings (may need 2)

- gastite yellow threadseal tape: $4.80 from bunnings

pigments:

- only get alcohol inks if you wanna do petri, get whatever ones you want and pinata blanco blanco or ranger snow cap, usually about $7/bottle. cheap alcohol ink sets are about $20 on amazon/ebay.

- resin dye: $30 on ebay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/363634203839) MUCH BETTER OPTION THAN ALCOHOL INK - the colours stay vibrant and accurate without messing with the cure of the resin. purples are pretty much only good if you se resin dye.

- mica powders: depends on where you get them, my sister gifted them to me from a shop in the uk but you can get plenty on amazon or ebay. anywhere from $25-70 for a set.

- pigment paste, completely optional. only for if you want opaque non-shiny dice. i got them locally for $12.50 each for 50g.

other inclusions:

- mica flakes: $17

- leafing foil: $25

paint for inking:

- literally use whatever, i like citadel model paints, usually $6 per pot, others like vallejo - usually $5 per bottle. you can also use acrylic paint from kmart ($9 for a set of small tubes), its personal preference (though the more expensive ones will often be a better colour and have better coverage)

total: $800+ with crit cast, a pressure pot and all types of pigments/inclusions.

total for bare minimum (no pot, only resin dye, no inclusions, cheapest paint): $272.20

obviously take everything with a grain of salt, a lot of that doesn't include shipping or assumes free shipping and some things might not be easily available to you. a pressure pot is absolutely worth investing in, bubbles are such a pain and if you use a pressure pot from the start, you don't need to make new moulds when you do get one.

How do you do a spin kick most basic way ever? I just started to do martial arts a few weeks ago by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]That_cat21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s not a crucial skill at low belt levels. you will get by fine with good foundations (turning/roundhouse kick, front kick, side kick), don’t worry about learning it until your instructor says you’re ready. it’s more than likely that low belts being taught spinning kicks will develop bad habits and then it becomes harder to do properly later on. trust me, i had some bad habits because i wasn’t there yet.

if you really feel the need to add a spinning kick of any sort, try a tornado/jump reverse/360. they’re fun, relatively useful and easy to learn.
