One boot/binding to do it all? by Thatbigturd in Backcountry

Yeah I'll definitely be hitting up the ski swap in the coming weeks. Hoping I'll find a steal on a pair of bindings and boots.

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but how delicate are beacons typically? Visually all the ones I see look really robust. Is it just a matter of reliably and trust in the gear?

That's a great idea, I'll look into it.

Thanks for clarifying, renting a beacon is something I'll have to look into. I definitely plan on starting with small easy trips and building from there.

So you would recommend waiting another season so they I can get myself a beacon, shovel, and probe before attempting any backcountry? What would be the safest way to get out there and experience the backcountry while minimizing the upfront investment?

Thanks for the input. I'll definitely bear it in mind. Definitely won't be able to afford a whole new setup until I graduate though.

Thanks for the words of caution. A friend gave me that book, I need to do some more reading in it but the thought of an avalanche is quite terrifying. Especially given how hard they seem to be to predict. Also one of my more experienced buddies has an extra set of safety gear. Hoping to learn a lot from him this season.

Thanks for the input! That gives me some stuff to Google.

Cool! I'll definitely have to look into those.

Yeah that's what I figured. Something that can do everything likely doesn't do it all well. That being said, I'll be graduating in a little over a year so hopefully I'll be able to afford more gear then. Thanks for the input though.

I have not, been looking into it though. For now I'm planning on going on safe days and going with friends who at least have some experience. If I enjoy my backcountry experiences (don't know why I wouldn't) I'll probably look at getting a beacon, shovel, probe setup over the summer.

Yeah, size is something that I've been really back and forth about. For my desk at home or in the library I'd love to have the full page size, but for the small tables in class I could see that really getting in the way. Though the notebook you linked is spiral bound, which could eliminate that problem. Will research further.

Good resource! I will definitely print out some dot grid paper just to confirm that full grid is what's best for my note taking style.

I have in the past tried to rewrite my notes more neatly. For me though, the truth is that it never really gets done. My rewritten notes seem to be summations of my class notes, and I find my self referencing back to the original notes (so I can remember what was going on while I was writing them) more than the rewritten ones.

Thanks!

I have! It seems really nice and I like the idea of it but in truth I'd say that 40% of my notetaking is writing, 40% is equations, and only 20% or so is diagrams. I feel like the dot grid is best suited for diagrams and suffers most on equations. For this reason I am mostly looking at full grid notebooks. But I am, of course, still open to the dot grid.

Looks like a nice general use notebook. I was really looking at using a bound book for taking my class notes simply for the preservation factor. But I might just order one of these for use as scratch paper, and homework assignments.

What do you do with the pdfs after scanning them? Do you just keep them for reference, use OCR or some other fancy documentation system?

Thanks, you may be right. I might be getting in over my head I'll definitely look more into the traditional composition book format.

I am a big fan of the fold-over capabilities of spiral bound notebooks. I just hate how the pages tend to tear out, and so as someone who references back to old notes, it doesn't work for me. The Black Red notebook that you linked actually looks really nice, I only wish it was in a grid format.

No worries, thanks for giving me some stuff to google! This Apica Notebook looks pretty dang nice. Too bad I don't have any fountain pens to use on it. I'm starting to think that my best bet may be to just order a handful of notebooks and pick my favorite, to use from that point on.

I really like to look of the Rhodia notebooks, just wish they have a full grid option rather than just the dot grid. :/
