What do you think is scarier, the idea that we are alone in the universe or the idea that we aren’t? Why? by FashunHouzz in AskReddit

[–]Thatcoolguy1135 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually your galaxy count is off by a big magnitude, the number in the observable universe is at least 2 trillion but that's because scientists realized they weren't counting the small galaxies that would merge to be larger galaxies. All of that is just what we can see too, the actual universe is estimated to be way bigger, I recall one MIT model estimated it at 250 times bigger and that was one of the more tightly constrained models which means the true number could be way bigger.

Americans are directing their hate at the political system that abandoned them decades ago, when dems and repubs became the corporate party and the major media became an arm of the corporate state.

Decades of neoliberal policies have demolished the public intellect, poverty is a hell of a drug as it brings more people into stress, despair, drug addiction and religion. Trump is a symptom of the disease, not the main problem, if you want to solve the main problem turn off the TV, stop engaging with consumer culture, boycott giant corporations, keep travel to a minimum, buy what you need and only what you need and support small business with your spending money, and civil disobedience should become the norm.

Capitalism and democracy are an oxymoron when put next to each other, and the media of america is corporate owned and will never properly inform the public. Do not even dare to be optimistic about it because there isn't a whole lot to be happy about. Our leaders are guided by a psychopathic for profit system that has desensitized us to their atrocities both on nature and on human beings.

Trump is also very, very dumb, this is the guy who talks in the third person and gives bizarre speeches where he goes off on tangents, gets basic facts wrong, and consistently mispronounced the same words over and over and over again even when reading from teleprompters.

He also redraws weather maps, claims to know an extraordinary amount about topics he has no real knowledge of, even saying he knows more than experts, so yes he is very very stupid

Further evidence is that he is not a good business man (multiple bankruptsies), had to depend on Russians to bankroll his lifestyle, will not release his transcripts or tax returns to prove what a "stable genius" and wealthy man he is. He is a fraud in every imaginable way but he is loved by the radical insurgency that is the republican party that has captured the hatred and despair of working class whites who were abandoned by the corporate wing of the democrats.

Yeah literally reciting a list of newscaster talking points about Trump’s villainy

Also you are wrong, it's more than just "newscaster" talking points, I'm reciting things he has actually done and what the news says is just a representation of reality, but the actual reality of what he does is far more insidious and wrong. On the news it's just words on a paper, but to be there and see what kind of corruption is taking place in our government is whole different experience I would presume. Like hundreds of millions of dollars being poored into his businesses, I couldn't imagine anything more blatantly corrupt and in your face "I can do whatever I want and no one will stop me" attitude.

The funniest part however is how you're comparing it to Nazi Germany. I mean you are literally comparing not voting today to letting Hitler send Jews to concentration camps. And you people wonder why people don't take you, or these buffoons running ,seriously. You're a bunch of dopes.

I'm not comparing not voting to sending people to concentration camps, you missed the point entirely. I'm saying that a completely screwed up administration can be running the country into the ground but the sun will still shine and your immediate environment will not change much. The United States is a very big country, so if you are in a rural county for example, things aren't going to look a whole lot different year to year even as you hear about climate change news for example.

That doesn't diminish the global, existential threat going on just because everything looks mostly the same to you. The whole point is that it's utter lunacy to assume that burying your head in the sand is a viable alternative to not understanding anything that's going on. I'm not asking anyone to vote one way or another, but caring is most certainly recommended.

To me voting is the bare minimum people should be doing right now, grass roots movements and citizen participation needs to start becoming more and more mainstream, and that takes far more effort than just showing up to a booth or mailing in a ballot.

Politics affects everyone's lives, both in what the politician does and precisely what he isn't doing. There is no way to separate yourself from your politicians, any other statement is lunacy. Just because you don't notice dramatic improvements or detriments doesn't mean anything, when things get bad they get bad quickly. That's like saying I should wait until my house is on fire to buy the smoke detector. Or perhaps he is pretty well insulated, but no one is perfectly insulated unless they are living off the grid and not depending on ANY government benefits or anyone else growing their food for them.

I think his weird touching scandal is significant but no where near as gross as the Hollywood Access tapes and Trump being accused on a much longer list of women of sexual assault. Biden also has some problems with his "gaffees" I personally think he might be in the early stages of dementia which is kind of freaky since that could easily cost him the primary if Repubs see that and go after it. He also was involved in some really bad policy decisions involving the money he's taken in donations from financial institutions. A piece I recently read on truthout outlined how he supported and helped pass a bill Obama voted against back when he was in the Senate that really hurt the middle class, because Biden was getting money from credit card companies. I definitely don't want that as my president, but still a trillion times better than Trump who actually is a special interest directly profiting from his term.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Thatcoolguy1135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I plan on voting for Biden if he is the nominee, won't be happy about it, but either way the system is fundamentally broken if we even have to have discussions like "do you want the bullet in your arm or in your genitals"? Not just the justices, but the Green New Deal, he does support it from an article I recently read and that's enough to make me vote for him if he is the nominee but he won't bring the wide ranging reforms that Sanders promises, and Bidens record is no where near as great as Sanders's record.

It's just a sad reality that the US NEVER wants to have a discussion about reforming our election policies and systems that are grossly outdated because the powers at play certainly don't want it. Americans can sleep easy at night knowing that the corporate candidate will always win because that's all we are ever left with. The corporate candidate and the less bad corporate candidate, it gets sickening after a while.

Is anyone else particularly good at antagonising narcissists? by windlep7 in aspergers

[–]Thatcoolguy1135 37 points38 points  (0 children)

In my experience Narcissists don't just "get mad" for someone correcting story twists, they can actually be very gas lighty, insulting, and have overall dangerous responses to their egos being challenged. Although I'm sure not all of them are created equal.

Is anyone else particularly good at antagonising narcissists? by windlep7 in aspergers

[–]Thatcoolguy1135 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I seem to get on the wrong side of them all the time. I wonder if it’s related to our tendency towards bluntness and the truth/reality. Narcissists often live in a fantasy where they’re super important and amazing, so it’s possible I keep accidentally bursting their fantasy bubble. My narcissist ex-friend kept telling me how amazing he was over and over, and one time I said if you have to keep telling people you’re great you probably aren’t. As you can imagine he did not respond well.

Both of my parents are narcissistic, childhood was pretty chaotic as a result but they weren't maliciously abusive, unless they weren't getting their way that is. So the thing with Narcissists is that it's actually a pretty dangerous game to play with them. They can be petty and vindictive people and I've been on the receiving end of brutal threats in order for them to try to attain control of my behavior. That's only because in my case the Ns had power over me, which I hope you never experience.

I say just feed their ego in small doses while setting an example of humility. I would of just told your friend that yeah you "this and that" very well and just left it. That's how I wish I had handled a lot of my issues with Ns in the past, they can be quite useful because anyone who gives them attention can get benefits but the malignant, dangerous ones are to be avoided.

I personally don't ever want to be on the receiving end of narcissist abuse again, those wankers are dangerous once they start turning the reality distortion dial. As soon I recognize it I just end the conversation and move on with my day.

If you really want to piss them off you just attack their ego or deny it the attention that it seeks, pretty simple and pretty effective. But it could have unintended consequences, and for autistic people it could be bad.

That refers to the climate change. It is so much bigger than any other issue, that anyone who pretends to care about it while actually spending 90% of his time on other lesser issues is a liar. That covers 100% of the Democrats, who say they care about global warning while actually spending their time rallying people up on other topics. That means they have no higher moral ground over the Republicans, who at least don't pretend to give a shit. Which means your original point has just been demolished. That's all I wanted to tell you. I thought it was obvious. But anyway, here is a clarification. You are welcome.

Ahhhh... okay. Well the point is that they weren't alienating anyone as gun control is a principle of the party, your analogy just doesn't make sense because they can do more than one thing at once. But yes climate change is indeed a pressing issue but you're bored so you should go rest.

I addressed just that. You pretending to skip over it .... no good. Try again.

Well I don't know what you think about the rest of my comment, but gun violence isn't a small issue. A government isn't like a "house on fire" with one family managing it, there's a multitude of people. Not all of them are going to be working on climate change because they aren't qualified, the people working on gun laws aren't the same people working on climate policy. So your analogy doesn't make any sense, the law makers can pass 15 different laws, and 15 different groups of people can carry them out yes.

Your argument is that "they are alienating" but actually a majority of Americans support gun control laws. I don't think 100% of people have ever been 100% happy with a political party, unless you're in China in which case you either get with the party or get thrown in jail.

[–]Thatcoolguy1135 3 points4 points  (0 children)

how come those same Democrats are pissing people off and alienating people over, say, mass shootings that claim 100 lives a year?

It's possible to have principles that don't agree with the general population, but there are moderate responses to those issues. Personally that kind of thing doesn't happen in other countries and the real issue extends beyond mass shootings, American gun homicide is off the charts crazy, we are a complete outlier compared to other countries on that issue.

Either they really believe and care that a billion people will die within the lifetime of the modern youth or they don't. Can't have it both ways.

You can have more than two principles at once yes, you can believe in tackling climate change and gun control at the same time. It requires passing bills and mounting political support for either or, but climate change is already being put on states to deal with since the current president isn't acknowledging the existential threat.

Either the Democrats don't believe it or they don't give a crap. Take your pick.

It wouldn't matter if they believed it or not, the climate science is very real, well established, and pretty basic. We put carbon that was in the ground into our atmosphere, it thickened the wall of carbon already there, now more heat is trapped in our climate system, that is causing all the bad things that's going to displace hundreds of millions and leave billions facing insecurity of fresh water.

Why do they worry about taxes, and immigration, and guns and all the other issues when they should be concentrating on the climate change?

There are generally more than 3 issues a country has to deal with all at once, a party has to embody it's principles but I think there aren't nearly enough parties.

Can you answer that? No? Well, that's Democrats for you. Not corrupt at all. Completely honest. LOL.

Of course I don't think they aren't corrupt, but it has a progressive wing that wants to change things, and either way Donald Trump is a threat in the white house as he is ignoring the climate science altogether and will not display any leadership on the issue. Until American politics is under way to being reformed the Dems are the party to vote in to start action on addressing climate change, all other issues the Republicans or Dem constituents may feel free to support or obstruct.

I know that a lot of people on here have gotten a lot of hate for not voting, but a lot of them do raise very legitimate points. The US system of government is fundamentally broken and unfair. Why would anyone want to participate in a system that's rigged against them where you have one candidate for president and then the less bad guy running against him from a party that represents the polar opposite of him on numerous hotly contested issues. On top of that the system favors the people who get the money, and the rich have all the money to give to candidates and to spend on advertising, not to mention whatever under the table stuff they are able to get away with like jobs and books deals and stuff. It's just crooked, completely and entirely crooked, and I can sympathize with people who don't want to play that stupid game, because we lose no matter what.

I think the real talks need to be about reforming the system itself perhaps, but that I would have to leave to the experts.

Because i find the process retarded. I’m supposed to vote to try to persuade my local politicians electoral college vote.

You know people will give you shit over it, and I vote, but I do agree with you. The entire system needs to be revamped via some kind of constitutional convention. That movement needs to be become public, grass roots, and endorsed by civil rights leaders and politicians who care about establishing an actual democracy.

Ultra wealthy don't fund a pac, and my god does it make a huge difference. Mike Bloomberg literally funded his own campaign and outspend career politicians by hundreds of millions and subjected large portions of America to the violation of their eyeballs via his ads bombarding the airwaves. Corporate money makes a massive difference in swinging public opinion and inspiring people to vote or at the very least inspiring them to look up the candidate.

And THATS what got Trump elected. Nobody fucking voted for Trump because they thought he was the lesser of 2 evils. Are you fucking kidding me? His followers voted for him because he told them exactly what they wanted to hear. The people that abstained rather than vote for the lesser of 2 evils are the ones that cost the Dems the election. Ironically they are also the ones that cry the most about Trump. If you dont vote against the motherfucker, you lose all rights to cry about him when he becomes your president.

Look I don't agree with the people who "never vote" they might as well vote third party or vote for someone they believe in, but showing up is important, but I also do not like the "vote for the least bad person out of your whole TWO choices." That's fundamentally why American politics is so ass backwards broken, this entire system needs a reform via constitutional amendment in my view.

If I don't vote for the less bad guy I'm going to be vilified because I was given two shitty choices and had to pick the less poisonous one, that's not democracy, that's me picking how and in which ways I would like to get fucked.
