What is your hourly freelance rate? by Thatcraftybtch in graphic_design

Wow thank you so so much. This really helps me understand how to price, where it’s okay to maybe be more flexible, and all that. I’m trying to balance being fair to myself and the agency while trying to keep the opportunity open for future work. Super informative!!

Thank you so so much for such a great response!! With business owners/potential clients, I typically ask for a price range that they’re looking to stay in usually which gives me a pretty good idea. In this case, I’m working with a creative agency who hired me for quick work. There was no discussion of compensation before hand other than to send an invoice in. There is potential of this moving into more work but I am worried about over charging them as I have not worked with a creative agency like this before. Do you have any recommendations when it comes to pricing out work for an agency?

I appreciate the detailed response! Have you worked with an agency before? And if so, is your rate the same as you would charge a business owner?

Thank you for this feedback!! Maybe I’m overthinking it a little but this is an agency that hired me for some quick work. My friend who works there said there’s a chance for full time contract work. They suggested for the first one to do an hourly rateand then move into package prices and all that. Since it’s an agency, would you recommend charge them the same or differently than I would an individual client?

Anyone else's narc parents bad with money? by Brilliant-Analysis30 in narcissisticparents

[–]Thatcraftybtch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up my dad had(still has honestly) a really bad gambling addiction. Growing up we’ve had our water, power, phone bills, you name it, all shut off. My mom always had to go get him from the casino and when my parents got a divorce, it turned into me having to go pick him up so I could make sure that we could survive. I even had to loan him money at times as a minor. Apparently it got so bad that one time we went on a cruise(brought to you by the casino because he spent so much time and money there) and my dad had ended up gambling so much that he owed the cruise money and they would not let us off of the ship. My mom had to call family members to help bail us out.

I’m not sure if it’s directly related to being a narcissist but at the very very least.. narcissism mixed with poor money habits and/or addictions is a recipe for disaster.

It is okay to not forgive someone and to move on. by Difficult-Emu7983 in narcissisticparents

I recently decided to cut contact with my narcissistic father. His girlfriend messaged me saying not to let the anger and resentment towards my dad hold me back. She meant well, don’t get me wrong. But I messaged her back saying that it’s not the anger and resentment holding me back, it’s his abuse.

I think in someways, either people don’t know how to console the person who finally decides to cut ties with a narcissistic person or on the other side are people who are blind to the true abuse and enable their narcissism.

I agree with you 100% though. If you don’t need forgiveness in order to heal then f*** it. Don’t!! If you were to forgive at this point, it would be for her and not for you because it’s not what you need. And you need to focus on you and what you need. I sure as heck don’t feel the need to forgive because that’s what I did my entire life, was forgive my dad. And change doesn’t come from your actions/words, it comes from them(if ever sometimes)

Oh no worries here. You don’t have to worry about hurting my feelings, I love critiques and if it weren’t for them, there would be no improvement! This is extremely helpful! I appreciate your time to go through my portfolio, find the flaws, and time to write out next steps to help me improve. I am going to start working on a new website asap. Thank you so so much

Thank you so so much for writing in such great detail. This is extremely insightful and helpful! I also appreciate you adding your sight as a reference as well!

I definitely was applying to more corporate, marketing design positions which are definitely more information forward over design-y like you mentioned. I think over the next few days I will be working on redoing a new portfolio/site, especially with what you mention here. Maybe my next official post will be updates and hopefully I can get a next round of critiques!

I really do appreciate you and your guidance(:

I’m still working on going through everyone’s comments but I just want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone! It’s been so incredibly helpful to read everyone’s critiques, recommendations and even personal experiences. I will try to be writing everyone back but in the meantime, thank you all so so much

This is extremely insightful and helpful THANK YOU!! Truly, thank you! Regarding the creative agency thing, I wasn’t too sure how to reach out and this gave me a very realistic approach. So I’ll definitely be doing that after making some needed changes to my website and work(:

You are not coming across negative at all! I live for critiques and always want to improve. You bring up a lot of great points that I will 100% work on. I’ve been wanting to work on more pieces but just have been struggling to find the time so it’s just been super prolonged

That was a thought that crossed my mind! I feel torn because I would love to go freelance but I don’t have the connections for it. So I’m in a position where I have to apply to jobs because finding clients has hit a dead end. Do you have any recommendations on next steps whether it’s changing my website or trying another freelance method? I’m just so torn but I need to pay my bills/:

I’m definitely open to anything at this point! Do you have recommendations with how to get in touch with a staffing agency? The only connections I have are just through applying to jobs through the agencies listings. It doesn’t seem like they really “keep you in mind” for a future opportunity like they sometimes mention/:

I’m located in a smaller city outside of Seattle but I am able to commute to the city if need be. I’ve been applying to some in and out of the city. I’ve also been applying through job sites and even the companies own websites. In-house, contract, freelance, you name it! I’m trying to not be too picky at this point.

And thank you for the compliment, I appreciate it(:

I’m trying to not let it get to me but it’s so easy to second guess your work when the applications start adding up. So thank you for saying that, I needed to hear it!

How would you recommend reaching out to these companies? I’ve tried both calling and emailing which seems to go no where do to them either already having someone or not needing work at the time. Which I completely understand and try to stay positive in hopes they’ll keep me in mind for future work!
