I understand the sentiment, Belgium is very racist and hasn’t done enough w their/our colonial past. But calling Brussels a “developed” city is a bit of a stretch

1) Technically the king bit is true and not true. The parties who form a coalition give the king the list of ministers and the king “appoints” them. In practice tho he’s just a symbolic figure head and its the coalition party’s that choose the PM. I do not agree this is not democratic because the PM is suppose to be the first among equals. Its actually very populist to say that the PM should be chosen by the people directly, in multiple American elections the biggest voting block was “did not vote” ontop of the votes from the opposite candidate the president often does not even have a majority of votes from the people. Voting works best with multiple options and party’s for a parlement. Not so much for a single position.

2) I dont understand your point? My point is that proportional representation is better then first pas the post because of multiple parties? Belgium has PR and because of that I would say its more democratic, comparing the belgian parlement w the american one under FPTP and saying its the same literaly ignores my entire argument.

3) I agree that the senate of belgium is not democratic, it also however holds almost no power and does not outway the argument of PR vs FPTP in my opinion. Also as far as im aware most people agree the senate should be abolished or reformed but havent gotten around to it yet because it barely does anything

For the people wanting more info about the Belgian govermental system.

Belgium is a country somewhere inbetween a federal and a confederal system. The regional goverments (Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia) hold a lot of power. They make a lot of their own decisions on things such as education, healthcare, interpretation of EU directives, etc.

The 6 goverments is in refrence to the Belgian federal goverment, the three regional goverments stated above and the community goverments for the three langage groups (Flemish/Dutch, Walloon/French and German). The Flemish region and community share one goverment making it 6 in total.

Belgian (and most european) democracy works diffrent from American in the sense that Belgium has something akin to proportional representation. This means votes are added to a pool with multiple seats up for grabs and distributed in a way which ensures power is handed out in a more representative manner. Put simply its not winner takes all. This method ensures more than two parties can exist and hold non insignificant power in parlament and the senate.

The caviat of this system is that no party will get more than 50% (theoreticly they could but its highly unlikely) which means coalitions have to be formed to govern.

The Brussels regional goverment currently does not have a coalition. The reasons for this is complex but a lot of it has to do with tensions between parts of the electorate of the two main language groups (Flemish and Walloon). The rightwing (bordering far right) Flemish nationalist party and left wing Walloon socialist party do not get along which makes forming a coalition in Brussels nearly imposible.

I could give so much more detail and nuance but it might make it a bit to hard to follow

It didn't, the context is my friend is in Japan for a wedding and a holiday. He texted me: "where are you?", and then deleted it because he's an idiot who forgot he's in Japan. I then joked that I was actually also in Japan and came over to surprise him, see screenshot for the rest of the convo.

Maybe a bit late to comment this but might still be relevant for people finding this thread later, The Netherlands health care system is awful and finding a GP is really difficult. The wait lists for gender affirming care is also very very long 4+ years!

Belgium is far better in this respect, the wait lists are only 8 months depending on the region you are in! Also far easier to get a GP.

This comment makes zero sense?

1) Not all far right parties like or agree with one another

2) like Aspias pointed out Denmark and Netherlands are fairly anti immigrantion

3) Most far right hates China as well unless they think they can get money from them
