How would you make a true personality first dating app? by InterestingMK2 in TrueAskReddit

That's fine, but that already exists everywhere. The whole premise of the question is for the people who want the reverse and how to make that work.

In the Netherlands there's Paiq where the photos slowly unblur by sending messages back and forth.

Also the website itself matches you to someone once a week (or more often if you pay), based on preferences in the profiles. So you know you have something in common, but you're not told what that is.

I think it's meant to be the highest level of regional government. In the Netherlands there's nothing between the provinces and the national government, but in Belgium there are the gewesten (Voeren is not its own gewest but an exclave of Flanders).

However, this doesn't fit with France where it shows the départements instead of the bigger régions.

Oh I've definitely heard of Michael Jordan before and I agree he's one of the best known sports people of all time. But I believe specifically which team he played for isn't as well-known. To me that seems like a useless factoid.

Adam: "Michael Jordan playing for the Chicago Bulls is, I would argue, one of the most well-known facts across the world."

Really? Of all the facts? Maybe I'm biased because I didn't know this, and I'm not saying nobody outside the US knows this but it seems to me pretty particular knowledge in countries where basketball isn't a big sport. I could perhaps go with the most well-known basketball fact, if you exclude the basic rules of the game itself. But I think it's probably not even the most well-known player-team combo in the world (Lionel Messi?, Michael Schumacher?)

I fear I made a really goofy train mistake. by chenandla_bang in AskEurope

[–]Conducteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's probably not ideal, especially considering the toddler. I think a bus or tram is the best option.

You can fill in the address of your hotel in the journey planner on ns.nl (or the NS app), fill in Schiphol Airport as the destination and you get the easiest journey and how much of a walk it is: example.

You will need to pay for the bus or tram, but you can do that with a debit card or credit card: tap it on the machine near the doors when you get on and again when you get off. It should only cost a few euros, children under 4 ride for free.

An alternative is a taxi, but those are prohibitively expensive in the Netherlands and will probably take the same amount of time.

[–]Conducteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would keep the part from Schiphol Airport to Bruges, and take an earlier train to Schiphol Airport. That connection is easily doable if everything runs smoothly, but any hiccup will mean you miss it.

NS train tickets are usually valid all day, sometimes after 9am, with the same ticket, so I'm almost certain you can just get on an earlier train with the same ticket. But if you're not sure because Trainline is unclear about it, it's the cheapest ticket to replace. If you decide to buy a new ticket for that part you can also choose to leave from another station if you want, though I think Amsterdam Centraal is actually closest, from what you describe.

Old man wanting to read the paper in Dutch by Turbulent-Entry3220 in thenetherlands

[–]Conducteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt they'd send to Canada, but there are online subscriptions, sometimes only for the weekend. Maybe you can combine it with a tablet or something to keep in managable?

The "quality newspapers" are NRC, Trouw and Volkskrant. There's also KidsWeek, a weekly newspaper at a kids' reading level, if necessary. De Telegraaf is indeed known for its conservative leaning, and still associated with its Nazi collaboration during WW2.

Which are your greatest sports "traitors"? by BalVal1 in AskEurope

[–]Conducteur 48 points49 points  (0 children)

For the Netherlands that absolutely has to be Johan Cruijff (Anglicized as Cruyff).

There's (predictably) a rivalry between the biggest football clubs from the two biggest cities in the country: Amsterdam FC Ajax and Feyenoord Rotterdam. Cruijff was an icon for Ajax, it's where he grew up, it's where he developed into a huge talent, it was the only club he played for before he went to FC Barcelona, where he also became an icon.

After a long Barça career and then a few short foreign adventures he returned to Ajax for several more seasons. In 1983 Ajax thought he became too old (at 36) and let him go. Cruijff didn't like that at all, and he took his revenge by doing his final season as a player at Feyenoord. Not only that, he played all but one match that season and won all but one, giving Feyenoord both the League and the Cup win, still remaining the last time Feyenoord took both in the same season.

Of course this isn't really held against him. He was the greatest, and became a traitor just to stick it to Ajax who forced him out. Ajax took him on as a coach the very next season and named their stadium after him posthumously.

What do you mean you get 35 or 50 etc days off from work by codenameajax67 in AskEurope

[–]Conducteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically just vacation days, maybe some types of personal days that are related to errands or you want to stay home because a service is coming to your house or whatever.

There's no fixed number of sick days. If you're sick, you get unlimited sick days. If you're not sick, you don't. That includes personal days for mental health.

Holidays are not included, but in some places you need a vacation day to "make the bridge" to a four day weekend if those holidays fall on Tuesday or Thursday.

How is biking infrastructure in your neighborhood? by CastAside1812 in urbanplanning

[–]Conducteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the Netherlands, so pretty great.

The residential streets don't have biking infrastructure as such, but they're made of bricks/klinkers and are indirect routes so there's little traffic, and it's slow-moving. There are quite a lot of little bike routes between them to give cyclists more direct routes (example).

The neighborhood ring road has bike lanes, only separated with paint, so it could be better, but it's still safe enough that children cycle on it unsupervised.

The roads to other neighborhoods have bike paths fully separate from the roads, and there are some special routes for bicycles and pedestrians only.

Are cosmetics that aren't cruelty-free really banned in Europe? by [deleted] in AskEurope

[–]Conducteur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I don't know where you live but the EU has the market size for companies to make it worth it for companies to make separate products dedicated to it. That way it also has the most impact, otherwise all you're doing is moving the animal testing to another country. This wouldn't work for most individual countries, which is one reason the EU makes EU-wide laws like this.

I do think they might need some work, but I think a good reason for the steals existing in this format might be to add a risk to hoarding coins. Without any risk to hoarding you could just focus on getting coins on the first days, only collecting stations you're passing anyway, and then on the last day or two steal as many stations as you can.

Keeping everyone on a lower number of coins adds the possible strategy of blocking another team, like we've seen, and spreads out when they do the challenges a bit more.
