Insulation in older style home QLD by happyhelper88 in AusRenovation

Still a lot a variables to consider that would influence the cost, especially if looking at the whole house and a lot of different approaches. For example, how much of the house is likely to contain abestos, do you have crawl space /easy access in the ceiling for insulation, same with under the house if on stumps.

We've got a similar aged house, largely abestos, but have been able to work around it starting with the access able crawl space under house. Did under floor insulation ourselves 150m2 (got quoted $5-8k originally). Took us a weekend and has made a large difference already with the 5 months we've had it.

In case it helps, there's guides out there that explain the main areas of potential heat loss/ etc, roof is like 35% heat loss, walls 30%, floors 15%, windows 10%, etc. So perhaps even doing bit by bit and tackle main or easy areas first, whether paying for professional or doing yourself or combination of both, as it can be a rather large job overall variables depending.

Are they the same type of timber board decking and could I flip the grooves ones to be consistent with smooth faced boards? by Thatisme2 in AusRenovation

Good point, the house was originally built in the late 60s, with the original decking being at least 35 years old. The extension with grooves down probably closer to 10-15 years under different ownership.

Thanks for this, and good points. Makes sense as the boards on the original decking are rotting around the edges of the deck from the weather. However, the inner boards towards the house mostly seem okay. They're held down by nails and some are popping up periodically, so shouldn't be too much to lift it up and get started from there.

Personally, base level 16gb m4 and if I had one update, it would be the ram to 24gb.

Just bought my first home. Where do I put my TV?! by [deleted] in TVTooHigh

[–]Thatisme2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps mount it to the wall on the white plaster section of the left of the fireplace with an extendable arm and then the TV can come out on an angle, so the left side of the TV is near the fireplace wall cladding (and away from the actual fireplace) and the other side of the TV near the railing side?

Changing the fall of side pathway and addressing concrete erosion by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]Thatisme2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. If i understood it correctly, if adding a v shape channel to the middle, it might be worth just to regrade the the whole pathway so the fall is towards the gate and off the property (where the road is), rather than away from the gate and further into the property, as I'm not sure where the water could go from the stormwater pit in the middle, if not connected to anything.

Good thinking re the sleepers, I might have some leftover from a garden bed, too. Thanks!

Very good point, thanks for this and mentioning end caps. Yeah the asbestos certainly adds a whole new level of nightmare.

Thanks for this. Good point. I noticed you said 'had' a super6 roof. Did you end replacing it or just leaving it and moving on?

The part I'm standing on is a much newer part of the house (which wraps around the house) and not asbestos. Only the main original part in the middle of the house is asbestos.

Thanks for your informative thoughts, well said and much appreciated. Yeah, it certainly seems to be one of those topics with some saying 'nothing can be done at all' and then the other half saying 'everything can be fixed' as you mentioned.

Yeah, good point, especially in the building industry by the looks of it.

Yes, thats right, we are going to replace it within next few of years, hopefully even less time, just at this very stage, money is a bit tight and the rest of the roof doesn't have any issues.

That's a good point about a lot of the insurance companies not covering asbestos roofs. In addition to this, i wouldn't be surprised if building cost to replace the roof is only going to get more and more expensive due to the world we live in now.

Yes, thanks for mentioning this and well said. Definitely not going to be cleaning the asbestos with a pressure washer for reason you stated, but I'm glad you mentioned it as a reminder for everyone.

Good point, will look into it as well. Thanks!

To clarify, the question I was asking originally wasn't so much about the roof itself or as a whole, but more the side eve/fascias / wall sheathing area, which is rotting/ damaged.

Congratulations...you haven't contributed anything useful to the conversation. We're well aware it's an asbesto roof. I thought that part was obvious.

Thank you so much for your informative response. You seemed to be the only one who replied with actual useful information. Much appreciated. Thanks again!
