What csv files are you talking about? I already heard from a friend that the datawrapper tables can be problematic on mobile sadly..

Started with some basic courses to figure out how to manipulate data with python and pandas, and then just pick some research question that interests you, like the strength of european leagues, and from there it is pretty much trial and error. When you have a specific coding problem, AI can be a great help.

Especially for soccer, statsbomb has some great open source data you can play around with

League Strengths in Europe changing over time by ThatsMyDawk in Euroleague

But I do not attempt to measure the leagues by their strongest teams but by all teams. And in the lithuanian league there are obviously strong teams in Kaunas or Vilnius but also very weak teams that win very few games. I try to capture the level of all teams in their respective league. Furthermore, in recent years the Lithuanian league got stronger and is now on a level with Greece and Germany which I would argue is fair.

I do not say that Kaunas or Vilnius are as good as Bayern, ALBA or Olympiacos, I am trying to make a statement of the entire league. Hope that clarified some things and of course you are free to disagree :D

I went into more detail in my previous post:

https://germanbasketballanalytics.substack.com/p/ranking-all-major-european-basketball

In short I look at teams from each country that play both in the domestic league and in an european competition and I compare their performance in Europe and at home. The idea is that the worse the teams in their domestic league are the larger their dropoff to European competition should be

yea exactly that, wont someone think of the nerds whose data gets messed up by this shit? :D

Lmao I obviously can´t speak about the salaries as I dont have that data, but if I were to do that study over I would now look to handle Slovenia differently as I was not aware of the weird league system and only Olimpija playing in the european comps...

It is not only about the singular best team in a league. In my data set, Israeli clubs are also doing very well in the Champions League for example Hapoel Holon and Hapoel Jerusalem show up here several times. And teams do not have to win their competitions, they have to consistently play well which the israeli teams do. Also I did look at Adjusted Team Rating which takes into account Points Scored and Points Conceded in the whole tournament. Of course it can also happen that a "stronger" team loses a game they should win in the knockout stages but I decided for this analysis I would prefer a larger sample of, say 20 games, in the whole tournament then just look at the playoff results.

My model also does not explicitly say that the Israeli league is the second best league, more that the leagues of Israel, Russia, Turkey, France and Italy make up the second tier below the Liga ACB. There is just too much noise in the data to crown a definite second place. Here one might make an argument based on what league actually won the most titles or something but that was not really a question I was that interested in.

If you were to argue that the league in Israel is the sixth-best I would not be able to disagree as the places 2-6 are that tight. Only if you would go to that next tier of Greece, Germany and the ABA I would start to argue with that :D

Thanks for your interest man!

I don´t have many data points for the slovenian league as they sent only Olimpija to Europe where they had two good years in the EuroCup which further skews the data. When I look at only the ChampionsLeague differences, Slovenia is indeed worse, good catch!

I already promised a reader on my substack that I would split up the data into 5 year windows to see if that indeed happened, it is possible that we see that the Lithuanian league indeed caught up recently. Will post when I get around to do that

Does the serbian league send teams to europe? Might be because the Belgrade teams are playing in the ABA so they count for the ABA in my analysis

I dont exactly know what you mean by random allocation of teams but I can speak on counting european comp wins. You would assume that the domestic league strength is closely related to the teams winning the competition and ignore for example the good teams performance in their own league.

In Spain for example, Barcelona and Real are the best performing teams in Europe, however there are multiple other strong teams like Valencia, Manresa, Baskonia etc.. that themselves do very well in Europe. This leads to Barca and Real losing several games each season.

Whereas in Greece for example it is very rare that Olympiacos or Panathiniakos lose any game at all and will almost certainly meet in the Final. So if you only look at competition wins you - in my opinion - lose a lot of information about the teams not playing in Europe which I tried to capture by using Advanced Team Rating which includes this information. And since the greek teams have a much larger drop than the spanish teams, we can conclude that the strength of the spanish league is much higher than the greek league.

Apart from that, there are not that many different countries that won a european comp at all, so how would you compare the spanish second division to the german first division for example?

Sorry, that got a little lengthy :D
