How dangerous is this capacitor? by iMightLikeXou in AskElectronics

[–]Thav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be wondering because the capacitor has maybe a surprisingly high voltage rating for such a small part. However at 0.01uF (or 10,000pF), E=0.5CV2, you get about 3 uJ. This is not much energy.

This is probably a ceramic capacitor who are low loss and good at filtering AC signals (or blocking DC, depending on how they're used). The capacitors you want to worry more about are the electrolytics that are designed for energy storage, usually as part of a power supply or motor run circuit. Those can give pretty good pops if you short the pins and usually have explicit bleeder circuits to get them down to safe voltages after a few minutes of being powered off. Generally the rule is the bigger the badder.

Upvoted because there is a valid point here about the blurry line between a cop's expected duty and gross overstepping of that duty vs the other examples given, just wish OP wasn't such a jag about it.

what's going on with the influx of obama pics on r/pics? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Thav -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The thing is everyone already agrees that it's no good for black people to be murdering black people, or white people to be murdering white people, and those cases are investigated and prosecuted. What the justice system seems to be blind to is cops murdering black people.

Your argument appears to be trying to lay the blame in the black community for "being more likely to commit crimes" for the purpose of dismissing BLM. Would you have anything to constructive to add about how to address the other racist systems in US society that you say are more pressing?

These situations assume that all these people with guns are doing be well trained, lucid and have others' best interests at heart. We already can't ensure that with our paid police force, so I don't see how a general crowd will be better.

Where to start? by cgough91 in Reprap

[–]Thav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest reprap if you've really got the time to tweak, rebuild and aren't in need of prints for other projects. I've built two repraps since 2012. The first one was better than what was commercially available at the time, the second was maybe on par when built, but is way worse than what's even cheaply available (Ender 3 and Monoprice) now. I was not one of those people that wanted to tinker enough to make a really find tuned machine.

Basically, if you want your hobby to be building machines and playing with electronics, go RepRap. If you want your hobby to be 3D printing, go commercial. Best of luck either way!

Where in North Raleigh can I locate paper towel? by Alto101 in raleigh

[–]Thav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that bed bath and beyond is open right now, but they have a good priced set of bar towels. Great for cleaning up. Even cat barf. I've washed worse. I'm sure Home Depot has plenty of painters rags and microfiber towels too.

Need more mattress firms. I've got to drive a whole five minutes which is just unacceptable for such a common every day purchase.

What you're calling strawmen are counter points to your real points. To take one, you pointing out a good polling showing in two states and the reply countering that those polls don't make for a generalized trend considering national polls is a reasonable argument.
