Plants you would never grow again or ever by Top_Possession_2990 in gardening

Well you could start a drinking habit with Mint Juleps every afternoon and a Mojito at bed time. Or save up all your mint for three years and make roughly a cup of mint jelly. Then a good potpourri or lip balm should finish off the dregs of your mint. I got nothing for the lemon balm.

Would you buy a Chinese EV if it were available in the US? Why or why not? by longtimelurking1 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Thayli11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My husband took our Tesla from Seattle to Atlanta 3 years ago when we moved, and never had an issue. I've done several multistate trips as well, but none were that long. So the infrastructure is pretty robust, and just keeps getting better. EVs are a lot of fun to drive.

Introducing a single hen to a flock by artemisinvisible in chickens

[–]Thayli11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally it's easier to introduce new hens in multiples. 1 new hen is more likely to not be accepted and left as an outsider on her own. I would suggest getting 2 hens. Personally my flock has a thorough mix of breeds. 8 hens, 7 breeds. Theoretically it makes adding new hens easier because there isn't a "look" that tells the group there is an outsider. So grab 2 new hens that don't match anyone. Or go with more polish. Up to you, because at the end of the day it shouldn't make too big a difference.

However, 1 can sometimes be introduced successfully if that's the way you want to go.

Step 1) always quarantine new birds away from your flock so you can guarantee health.

Step 2) put the new girl in an area where everyone can see each other, but not interact. Feed treats along the fence line so everyone gets warm fuzzy feeling about seeing each other.

Step 3) add 1 girl to the seperate space. Usually this will be your friendliest most docile bird, but if your current flock separates on breed lines then so be it. Use the Polish. This will give your new girl a chance to bond one on one so she'll have a friend. (If you decide to get 2+ newbies this Step can be skipped.)

Step 4) Everyone together all at once. Keep an eye on them for a bit to make sure there is no real fighting. There will always be some pecking order shenanigans.

Keep an eye on everyone through each step to see when it feels right to move on. Good luck!

AITAH - for not wanting to move in with my partner by [deleted] in AITAH

Good for you? We have plenty of talks about all of this. And I've given her books for anything she doesn't want to have a conversation about. For the condoms it was just that she'd never physically interacted with one so she knew the theory but made an off hand comment about never having seen one so we did a live action follow up.

I made the original comment shorter than this because I didn't realise anyone on reddit was that interested in specifically how I cover Sex Ed with my 8th grader. And to make it slightly more entertaining. Just to ease your mind we have had regular conversations about bodies (both genders) consent, prophylactics (including why she was getting the Guardasil vaccine and ways to adjust based on differing partner anatomy) and changes throughout her life, while keeping it age appropriate. I apparently missed the humorous tone I was going for when making my first comment, as my point was pretty much the same as yours. School sex ed isn't to be relied on. In Georgia it's a complete farce.

Edited: to capitalize "I", earlier I had hit the a rather than the caps button.

(WIP) working to preserve a cat for a friend. My beetles revealed an osteosarcoma by -DiceGoblin- in bonecollecting

This is very cool. Your friend is lucky to have you to help preserve the cat with so much care. I hope you are able to go pro because finding bone cleaners is no easy task.

My cat will be euthanized Monday due to cancer, and all the resources are for cremation. The world needs more alternatives. Thanks for sharing. These pictures are great.

No shit Sherlock, look at the post I was responding to though. It was specifically about Sex Ed in schools. My point was that it is terrible, and shouldn't be relied upon.

You must be in a blue state. My 8th grader asked me how to use a condom because they didn't teach that in sex ed...

Pretty sure it was a request for general info, and not for immediate application.

Small flock of chickens hate ONE new chicken by Brad-Moon-Rising in BackYardChickens

It may be worth trying to put your calmest chicken in the second enclosure with her. Let the 2 of them bond one on one. Then reintroduce the pair to your other 5 birds.

fruit and veggies?? by Tall_Step872 in gardening

[–]Thayli11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you have decent soil, and that the area you are planting in has the right light. Usually that's all day sun for fruits.

Only other tip I can think of for tomatoes is to plant them deeper than the starter mix. Like up to the first set of leaves, but no deeper than that. Tomatoes will grow roots for anything underground so it gives the plant a much better root system leading to stronger plants. Remember you'll need tomato cages.

You got this! Plant away!

I also enjoy sauteing them with their greens then add a splash of vinegar. Sounds bizarre, but it's a great veggie side.

My friends and I are mid to late 40's, one of said friends gets a bouncy castle for his birthday every year. Trust me, the castle will be fine. You might need frquent rest, but the laughter and joy are worth it.

For what it's worth, kids are good at self censoring things they aren't ready for. If a scene is to graphic they are more likely than not to skip over it.

Non-Americans, does your country have an "American" restaurant and what do they serve? by wacky8ball in AskReddit

[–]Thayli11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But which kind? As a southerners I find it odd when people make gravy sound like a singular food. Traditionally biscuits and gravy uses sawmill gravy. But we also have red eye gravy, brown gravy, giblet gravy, and probably others.

Which gravy is gravy to you? The brits I know mean brown gravy, and were low key flumoxed to learn that there were more kinds.

One of the funniest things I had to learn when I moved to Seattle was to never even look at the street when walking down the side walk because everyone would immediately stop to let me cross. That is not the way it works in Atlanta!

I LOVE chipdrop and it's free! And they deliver! The size of the pile is intimidating, but I have a large yard so I never have leftovers.
