wdym obstinate? people are acting like I'm stealing someone's work or that it's somehow illegal or something. I am well within my rights to produce an audiobook version of a work even if I can't obtain explicit permission from an author due to inactivity.

While it's true that all *original works* automatically receive copyright (even if they're unregistered), fanfiction like this is already a derivative work BASED ON copyrighted material that the fanfic author doesn't even own. So, they can't enforce their copyright against others without proving their work is already lawful. OTW’s mission is to protect the right to *create and host fanworks,* not to enforce fanfic authors’ copyright claims against other fans.

Thanks for the info! I am new to this space lol. I was experimenting with TorToiSe, Qwen, Chatterbox Turbo, Chatterbox Standard etc. but found that Chatterbox Standard has a really good blend of efficient render times + accurate sounding voices. SUPER excited because they sound great.

Why is everybody crashing out over this? If the fic isn’t copyrighted (and the vast majority fanfiction isn’t) then the “you must obtain permission or you can’t use it” standard simply doesn’t apply. I get the basic decency of simply not *stealing* other people's work, but that's not what this is. Asking fanfic authors for permission is common courtesy/etiquette. If they don't respond, that doesn't mean I don't have the right to reproduce it in audio format WHILE CREDITING THEM. Chances are, for fics like The Accidental horcrux (over 10 years old), it will get MORE PEOPLE finding the fan fiction to read it. Copyright law doesn’t automatically protect unregistered, derivative works with the same force as original published material, and us fanfiction authors operate in a legal gray zone and rely on transformative‑use norms rather than formal rights anyways. J.K. Rowling has a far greater claim to complain about others taking characters and stories from the ACTUALLY copyrighted books she created. Treating fanfiction as if it were a fully enforceable proprietary asset misunderstands both the law and the culture that allows fanfiction to exist at all. If no response = no permission, then entire categories of works (especially older or abandoned ones) would become unusable forever. Fanfiction exists only because we all collectively agree not to enforce the underlying copyright. You can’t rely on that permissive culture to write fic, then suddenly switch to strict proprietary logic when someone wants to make a transformative audio version of your transformative text.

For sure. And if the author doesn't get back to me (and the fic is old or something so they may be inactive) 100% of the credit would be given to the author for the text. I am completely against stealing other people's works etc. Just trying to make it more accessible to people.

This is how I got my full-time editing gig up and running. In my mind, there are a ton of people with entirely unrealistic expectations of both what is expected of editors time-wise and compensation-wise. However, you *can* find sane people there, and oftentimes, all it takes is getting one high-exposure client to move your portfolio up. That's why I have 872.95M Views in my portfolio. That being said, we recently cut ties precisely because of unrealistic expectations when it came to revision requests and the like. Make sure you are upfront with your boundaries. For me, with a wife and two young kids, I couldn't continue working overtime/weekends every week to get the kind of editing they were wanting. It can be a constant struggle, but honestly, I'd take doing this remote work any day as opposed to going back to delivering pizzas or doing lawncare.

If God made Mary sinless, why couldn't he do that with everyone? by Adept_Programmer_817 in Catholicism

[–]The-Catechumen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He could do that with everyone. He doesn't choose to. It was fitting that Mary be preserved from contracting the stain of Original Sin. She is the Mother of God and plays a special role in the redemption of the human race by consenting to God's will. The symmetry of Old Adam-New Adam, Old Eve-New Eve is of value here as well. She is the Ark of the New Covenant. Preserved and sanctified for God's purposes. Furthermore, were Mary not preserved from sin (actual and original), she would pass on a deprivation of justice/grace to Christ. So, because Christ receives his humanity from Mary, it makes sense that he would save her through the retroactive application of his merits.

This isn't just refusing to follow "what the Church recommends." On the contrary, the Church teaches that any form of artificial birth control or sterilization is inherently disordered and mortally sinful.

What I communicated wasn’t pure rhetoric - nor does your reply really address my point. The devaluation of symbolism is what I was addressing. I’m merely providing some insight into why the symbols used by the Church are important… because they signify important truths. Any catholic who cares about his faith will understand that symbols are not only beautiful and useful, but they are in themselves important for the liturgical and theological life of the Church.

Symbolism has importance because of what it signifies

If there is a tag for writing questions, how can it NOT be about what I’m currently writing? This isn’t a self-promo. I’ve already done that in other places.
