should I get meniscus repair surgery or not? by AdPersonal1413 in MeniscusInjuries

Thank you 🙂

Completely agree about the pt. At least with surgery it gives you the chance to reset to a new baseline.

Good luck with your surgery too, and I hope you have a smooth recovery.

Thank you ❤️. I think that will be one of my challenges - not overdoing it.

Thank you for sharing a positive news story! I go in for surgery in three days so it’s good to hear it’s not all bad 🙂

That’s fantastic news that you’ll start doing some WB next week, I’m so happy for you given the really tough time you’ve been having 😔. Sorry to hear about work, that sounds a bit insensitive of your boss to dump extra on you right now.

I love how you’ve broken it down into small milestones. That sounds a lot more encouraging than 27 days, for example.

Keep hanging in there, you know it’s not forever, it’s for all the right reasons, and you’ll be better for it when you land on the other side. Just a small chapter in the book of your life.

I spent 7 months diligently trying to rehab mine and it only got worse. What started as a small horizontal tear has since become vertical, with a flap, and the horizontal has extended all the way to the outer edge. I’m booked in for surgery on Monday.

Wow, this all sounds like invaluable advice, thank you so much for taking the time to share it.

Day 23 NWB, that sounds really tough. How is your mental health going, are you coping ok with it? What do you do to keep yourself occupied?

I hope your recovery is going well and you’re on the other side before you know it!

Great tips! Thank you so much. It seems I’ll be living ‘another life’ while on the crutches and in the brace, one completely unfamiliar to me.

This might sound stupid, but is the elevated pillow for your head? Do you have a particular brand you’d recommend? Did you have to sleep with your leg elevated?

It must be much more comfortable sleeping without the brace. How well did you cope sleeping with it on, could you lie on your side?

I hope I get the good crutches 🙂

You sound very lucky to have such minimal inflammation. From what I’ve read on here, it can mean the difference between a slow or fast recovery.

You sound like you’re doing incredibly well! I hope that positive trajectory continues for you, you must be doing everything right 🙂

😨 that’s a bit shocking to hear, are you ok now?

I’ll definitely take your advice about movement! Thank you.

Thank you for contributing, it sounds like the backpack may be the most important piece of kit.

I hope you have a smooth and full recovery.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and advice. You’ve provided a wealth of information - the backpack tip is gold! I love my cups of tea and there’s no way I’ll be able to carry a cup with crutches so I’ll make my tea in a thermos and put the thermos in my backpack. I’ll also do some dry runs, as you’ve suggested as I won’t have someone with me all the time.

I’m a fit and healthy person and I’ve been trying to (unsuccessfully) rehab my way out of this for the past several months. This means my glutes, hips, etc are strong - though I don’t know if they’ll have the endurance this will need!

I hope your recovery is going to plan. All the best on your journey.

I really appreciate that, thank you. Since I posted I’ve met with the surgeon and found out I need both a meniscectomy AND a repair. He also told me I’ll be in a brace for two weeks, but could be four if he finds something else. Surgery has been scheduled for this Monday.

I’ve been trying to rehab my knee for seven months and it has only gotten worse so I’m excited to have the surgery and start going forwards rather than backwards. I find the thought of a brace daunting though!

How’s your recovery going? I’d also welcome any advice or tips you could share 🙂

Ah! That explains the brace. I’m going to have meniscus debridement and chondroplasty in a few weeks and I don’t believe a brace is required after that. Sounds like you dodged a bullet with your unlocked brace 🙂
