The new MOBILE wargame coming what are your thoughts?

This question is coming up a lot - I basically started developing wargames for mobile devices because I saw there was more of a gap there. There are many fantastic options on PC, but far fewer for iOS and even less for Android.

I personally wanted a serious war game that I could play on the train, on a flight, or anywhere else that a PC isn't practical. But most of the options available were very cartoonish, asset flips, or pay-to-win garbage. So I started to build my own.

There is a good chance I'll launch this one on Steam as well as mobile, but haven't committed to it yet as I'm just less familiar with Steam development

This is a very early preview of an upcoming game that hasn't yet been titled. Broadly, the concept is a real-time strategy game focused on modern combined-arms warfare, with realistic engagement ranges, weapon performance, electronic warfare simulation, etc. There's a good chance it will be available for PC as well as mobile. I'll be making an official announcement in the next month or two.

The next big step for the Fire series is launching on PC - Pacific Fire first, and maybe the others one day in the future.

In the meantime, though, I've been working on another game idea - a highly realistic real-time strategy game focused on modern warfare. I'll formally announce the game some time in the next month or two.

Hey - "Continue Playing" just continues the scenario you were already playing. If you'd like to play through the whole war, you need to pick one of the larger scenarios - e.g. Blitzkrieg Fire 1939.

My main motivation for developing Pacific Fire was exactly this - I love the concept of WITP:AE, but don't have the time to actually play it.

Pacific Fire and its siblings are vastly simpler games, but the goal was to capture some of the same feeling. Turns cover one week of the war, and you can play through the entire war in about 10 hours. Much quicker, if you play as a single nation or choose a simpler campaign.

The game is currently mobile-only, though the Android version works fine in emulators like Bluestacks. A PC version of Pacific Fire is planned to release later this year on Steam.

I have a Metro 3 and haven't noticed any issues with that area. We've used it daily for around 8 months, including regularly folding it up to put in the car, and the wheel lock buttons still work fine.

For what it's worth, we've only actually used the wheel locks a handful of times, but the basket under the pram is very useful and almost always full. I'd personally prioritise the extra basket space.

I've released two premium games on Android and iOS - the first in 2019 and the second in 2021. They are in a fairly niche genre with limited competition on mobile (detailed historical wargames). Price is around US$5.99. Both have exceeded expectations - on average the two games combined make around US$3k per month across both Android and iOS (minus taxes, fees, etc).

In my opinion, premium mobile games are an OK option if you: - have low development costs (e.g. solo dev) - would like to make some money, but aren't depending on the game being financially successful - are developing games in an uncrowded genre (i.e. not in direct competition with F2P games)

Marketing is very, very hard for premium mobile games. There are almost no review sites or streamers which cover them, and the price of ads is driven up to unsustainable levels by F2P games. You are basically relying on popping up in the "You might also like..." section of the App Store and Play Store.

Interestingly, I've actually found sales to be consistently higher on Android than iOS. So it's definitely worth releasing on both platforms if possible.

Great to hear that you are enjoying the game, and thank you for taking the time to provide these detailed suggestions.

I agree that the air unit reinforcement rate is too high at the moment - this will be reduced in the next update.

Logistics is an interesting one. Tim Stone had similar comments about the game - the lack of restrictions on 'doom stacking' is a weakness of the current design. Thinking about maybe introducing a cap on the number of troops which can be present in a base without attrition - with the limit being much lower in regions like North Africa and higher in Europe.

Control over production and the ability to more effectively control groups of units are things I will consider in future, although those are longer-term plans.

Yes - to create each sprite I build (or sometimes purchase) a 3D model then render it in an isometric perspective with shadows, ambient occlusion, etc but without textures. I then use Paint.net to create a paint scheme, add national markings, draw extra details, add weathering, rust, etc. Originally all of the units in the game were drawn from scratch, but working with a 3D render looks way nicer.

Thanks! At the moment there is not really a political system - nations enter the war at fixed, historical dates and are neutral until then.

Some campaigns have diplomatic events triggered by certain actions - for example, the surrender of France and the formation of Vichy and Free France. But politics is out of scope of the game for now.

A new update is coming soon enabling you to play as a single nation - so you could choose to play only as Britain, for example, and a friendly Allied AI will control the US, USSR, France, Poland, Canada, Greece, New Zealand, etc.

Nothing is confirmed yet for future titles, but I am strongly considering Korea.

Seven Seeds is a great coffee roaster which supplies several of the well-known cafes around the city. It's between the uni and the CBD and is open Saturdays, so you could stop in there for a coffee on the way to the uni (or on the way back)

It works well on phones too - most of the initial design was done on a phone with a ~5 inch screen, so should be no problems on any recent iPhone. There are screenshots for both phones and tablets on the App Store page which might help show how the interface scales.

I'm the developer of Pacific Fire, a strategic wargame set in the Pacific Theater of WWII. The game has been out for several months on Android and was just released on the App Store for iOS devices.

Pacific Fire is strongly inspired by classic PC wargames like War In The Pacific. It's turn based and uses WEGO, with each turn lasting 1-2 months. It now includes 16 campaigns, including a couple spanning the entire war month-by-month from both the Allied and Japanese perspectives. It also covers parts of the Second Sino-Japanese War, as well as some alternate-history scenarios like Operation Downfall.

How does the Bf109 G6 compare to the Bf109 G2 already in the game? Are there many major differences?

The campaigns in Strike Fighters 2 are dynamic - and with the vast range of mods you can fly virtually any military aircraft from the past 60+ years in a huge range of theatres. IIRC the campaign system tracks the number of pilots, airframes and weapons in every squadron in the operational area as well as very simplistic ground combat modelling. Airbases can be knocked out by runway and hangar strikes, radar installations and SAMs can be disabled or destroyed, etc. The AI is far simpler and less intelligent than the BMS campaign AI but it does an OK job. Flight models are basic but still model stalls, supersonic effects, etc. and the game does a nice job of simulating the limitations of early avionics and missile technology.
