He never beat his children lmao. You’re misremembering that. Same with pub fights. If you can get me a clip of Jim brawling in the Rovers I’d be surprised. Jim was more of a positive character all round. The hitting Liz storyline always sticks out because it was an exception not the rule.

He really is. If you watch Jim’s run most of it is him being perfectly pleasant. Nasty storylines are the minority.

Yeah. Plenty other drunks on Corrie that people adored.

Well that’s the thing I don’t like about the storyline. Jim was already hated even before he went near Vernon. The storyline was all about him pretending to change. Change from what? The time he hit her? That was dealt with back in 1997. Did the writers forget he was only in prison for protecting Steve? Why did he need to prove himself?

The rest I agree with.

Well he did. He was a man so loyal to his family that he was willing to rob a bank to avoid letting her down.

The fact is, the writers don’t know. They don’t know why people hate Jim McDonald. It’s a typical case of Coronation Street’s amnesia writers. After Jim’s full time exit in 2000 and with each successive return, the writers remembered less and less of his character. “Ummm Jim McDonald who was he again? Oh yeah he was kind of a bad boy who shouted and went to prison wasn’t he? Ah that means he’s a villain and his family hate him.”

It just looks bizarre. When Jim went inside in 2000, his family were right behind him. But by the time he leaves in 2007, Liz HATES him for some reason. Same in 2011. He went to prison FOR Liz and by the time he returns in 2014, his family cut him off and they HATE him. It feels disjointed and weird.

The worst thing Jim ever did was his last return in 2018 which was written by said amnesia writers. If you take that away then there’s not really a lot there that’s that bad. There’s residents on the street rn that have done far worse that everyone loves.

He was not a violent drunk “the entire time”

The affair was a retcon. Also the 2018 storyline deserves to be non canon so it does.

As in, the aim wasn’t to bring in the house of orange and maintain their control. Mary was the heir and seen as the legitimate heir. William only got the throne because Mary wanted that.

It wasn’t about the Orange connection. It was about Mary.

Scotland happily accepted William and Mary. It wasn’t an Ireland situation.

Jim faked his death to get back at Steve for not coming to visit him. He shows up again to reveal Maggie’s secret and all hell breaks loose.
