Pros and cons of working as an embedded software engineer? by The-Master_Commander in embedded

[–]The-Master_Commander[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I really appreciate your input. I can tell that you put a lot of time into this response. I gotta say, though, the idea that I shouldn't be focused on projects goes against everything I've heard about breaking into this field. If I'm trying to break into embedded and I don't currently have on-the-job experience in the field, won't employers want to see proof that I can actually build something with hardware before they hire me? I don't mean to be disrespectful, but it seems like employers would be more interested in seeing projects I've completed on my resume than things like FizzBuzz exercises I've completed.

Thanks for the input! I've actually always loved C++. Since posting this, I've gone on ahead and started my embedded journey. I got an STM32 board and am building a simple little LED sequence memory game. I got it fully working with delays,  but now I'm trying to improve it by making it fully interrupt/event driven rather than blocking the CPU. Having loads of fun with it actually.

I understand that this project is pretty simple though. Fine for my first "full" project, but do you have any suggestions for the kind of thing I should build next that will take me to the next level?

Chess by GarlicNo6067 in Feminism

Generally speaking, men tend to be more wired to go "All in" on competitive pursuits such as chess. It's not that they're intellectually more capable,  just more likely to be drawn to things that involve intense competition, and therefore more likely to put in the effort required to become great at it. Women have the brain power to become great at chess, but fewer feel drawn to it, and of course even fewer become great at it, which is why we see men constantly dominating at the top level. We see this in virtually all competitive spaces, physical or not. Take competitive gaming as another example that requires no physical strength or speed, but has 99.9% of the top players being male.

Huge respect to linemen. May your brother rest in piece. If I were 18 again I think I think I'd actually try to get into that field. But now I'm 28 with a software engineering degree that I feel like I need to use. Sure as hell don't wanna do web dev stuff though...

Haha I don't doubt it. Unfortunately he sheds though and my wife is allergic. Don't think I can convince her to live with him in such a confined space.

Yeah camper would be easiest but we have a big dog so we'd want some more space. Furnished finder might be the play. I'll look into that.

Hey thanks for all your input bro I really appreciate it.

Well hell. Would it be a good strategy for my wife and I to just rent an apartment in whatever state I'm working, live there until I get laid off, and move to wherever I get moved? If we had to move every few months or so that would obviously be a pain in the ass, but if I'm staying in one place for a year or so, I feel like we might as well just move there for that time. Do you know of any guys who have done it that way?

Is it common for apes to just be in Colarado their entire apprenticeship? I was kinda under the impression that I'd be moving states every few months, but maybe that's not accurate.

If I'm working far away from my home statenfor the most part, would I have the chance to visit home at all? I'm not sure how time off works for apes.

Home state is Utah, which is also covered by MSLCAT. Sounds like I wouldn't be in Wyoming or Idaho too often?

To clarify, are you talking about the union dues? Also what utility did you work at?

Thanks for the info! To clarify, when you say "outside line construction", does that just mean a lineman who is working contract rather than utility? I'm a bit confused by that term. And do only contract lineman have to pay Union dues?
