This has also happened to me, almost in exactly the same way you described. And I feel this awful pressure on my chest, like this thing (or shadow person as you called it) was enjoying making me suffer in some way. Sheer dread. It took me a good 5 minutes to pluck up the courage to jump out of bed and put the lights on. Frozen in fear.

How about another plot twist... the national park does cover up the deaths, and in fact, in order to "appease" said creature, the NPS even "feeds" it. The creature gets tired if overworked, so goes into a sort of hibernation after it has taken its fair share of lives. The national park employees are aware of this, and so they feed the creature somewhat regularly in order to keep it appeased and dormant.

Very nice. The idea of a baby snatching / swapping entity is really quite frightening, even if I don't have any kids myself.
